Redfish: Available all year in the Golden Isles of Georgia. In the winter, when our water can be crystal clear, they are in schools of 25 to 100-plus fish. Winter can be some of the best time to sight fish for redfish. Spring brings the large schools, breaking up into smaller schools and onesies, twosies. Here we target them on low-tide flats. This pattern continues throughout the summer. In the early fall, huge spring tides flood the flats and the redfish invade the high marsh to gorge on fiddler crabs. This is when the fish are tailing actively in the grass. Classic, Southern fly fishing for redfish. As fall continues, the fish become active, chasing shrimp coming out of the creeks and fattening up for winter. As fall turns into winter, the water begins clearing and the schools become larger.

Speckled trout: Available year round but are most active in the fall.

Triple tail: A unique sight fishery for free-floating triple tail from April through August. Sight fishing for free-floating triple tail should be on everyone’s bucket list. Ours is truly a unique fishery.

Jack crevalle: 25-plus-pound jack crevalle are in our area from July through September. This is a target of opportunity, so we are ready for them with an 11 wt. in the boat all summer. The big jacks are like migrating ducks. One day they are here, the next, they're gone.

Region/Terrain:

St. Simons Island is a barrier Island just across the marsh from Brunswick, GA. Brunswick is on I-95. It is about halfway between Savannah, GA and Jacksonville, FL. St. Simons Island is part of the Golden Isles of Georgia which is composed of the barrier islands of Jekyll Island, Sea Island, St. Simons Island, and Little St. Simons Island. We have thousands of acres of unspoiled, healthy spartina grass marsh, hundreds of miles of rivers and creeks, and open-ocean fishing with very light fly-fishing pressure.

There are several flats I run to where I rarely ever see another angler. On one of my most productive flood tide flats, I have seen only two other people fishing close to it. This is in over eight years of fishing this particular flat. I fish all over these flats, rivers, and near shore bars. One of my clients described our fishery as "Out of the way, but worth it." Several clients say it is an undiscovered fishery. Our area is fairly rural, and we are at least one to two hours from a major metro area. This all helps to limit pressure.

Typical Weather:

Because of the location on the South Georgia coast, our weather is typically very mild.

Winter:
Brings lows in the 40s and typical highs in the mid- to upper 50s F. While freezing weather is possible, it lasts only a day or two. Some of the best fishing of the season is after a day or two of freezing weather. Water temperatures are typically in the low- to mid-50 degree range. Winter brings huge schools of redfish, and can offer some of the best fishing conditions of the year.

Spring:
Brings mild weather, usually beginning in February. Highs in the 80s and lows in the 60s warm the water to the 70s and make the fish more active.

Summer:
Offers highs in the 90s and lows in the 70s, and water temperatures in the 80s. Fishing is best from daylight to early afternoon when the temperature is bearable and before the typical afternoon thunderstorms. The flood tides on the full and new moons in the summer inundate the marsh grass, and the redfish come into the marsh to tail and gorge on fiddler crabs. This is some of the most exciting fishing of the year.

Fall:
Brings cooling weather and offers some of the best fishing of the year. The fish are hungry as the water cools. The shrimp leave the creeks and the fish follow. Temperatures are typically in the low 80s during the day and the mid-60s at night.

Q. Where is the closest airport?

A. Brunswick, Georgia is served by Delta. Jacksonville, Florida airport is one hour South, just off of I-95. Savannah airport is about 1 1/2 hours up I-95 North.

Q. How far do I need to be able to cast?

A. I can get you to within 20 feet of the fish, but the farther you can cast accurately, the more chances you will have for fish.

Q. How many shots at fish will I have on a typical trip?

A. Sometimes I have trouble finding fish, and you only get a dozen or so shots, but most days you will have shots at 50 or more fish. We have some of the best redfishing on the East Coast in the Marshes of Glynn.

Q. Are gratuities included?

A. One of the most common questions is regarding gratuities. Gratuities are not expected but appreciated. It is common for clients to leave a gratuity. Many ask what is the normal gratuity amount. Gratuities can range from 15-30% depending upon how satisfied you are with our efforts. We will provide the best service possible, regardless of gratuity.

Q. Where can I stay?

A. You can stay at hotels in Brunswick or on St. Simons or Sea Island. There is a wide range of hotels from the 5-star Cloister or The Lodge associated with Sea Island, the historic King and Prince Hotel on St. Simons to the quaint St. Simons Inn to Holiday Inn Express.

Additional Activities:

The Golden Isles offer a world of other activities. There are many great restaurants. St. Simons is a golfer's Mecca. Jekyll Island is primarily a state park. You should see the Millionaire's Village and the Sea Turtle rehab center on Jekyll. Or just enjoy the beaches on either St. Simons or Jekyll Island.

Nature tours are also available. I can take you to the deserted beaches of Cumberland Island or do a bird tour and see the largest nesting colony of royal terns in Georgia. There are so many things to do and see in the Golden Isles. You will be glad you took a day or two to enjoy our little piece of paradise.
