The Story

North Carolina's Chetola Resort is an Orvis-endorsed fly-fishing lodge, and you can expect the same credibility from our guides as well. Chetola's Orvis-endorsed guides will exceed all expectations with our experience, knowledge, and professional guide training. This training, combined with access to 3,000 miles of public waters as well as pristine public waters, places us as one of the top fly-fishing destinations on the East Coast.

Our specialty lies in catch-and-release rainbow, brown, brook, and trophy trout, as well as smallmouth bass and carp. Our professional guides make a point to personalize each trip based on the guest's experience and expectations, the current conditions, and the season, to ensure a great day on the water. Our individually curated approach focuses on both technique and hospitality, allowing our guests to make memories that last a lifetime. Chetola Resort offers the perfect combination of natural resources, hospitality, knowledge, and decades of local experience that allow the best fishing experience in the area. As a full-service resort, we also offer unique adventure packages that are ideal for families, groups, and corporate team-building seminars.

The name Chetola originated from the Cherokee meaning "place of rest" and we invite you to do just that. For some, a place of rest may be found on the shore of a remote riverbank. For others, it is found in our spa's relaxation room. No matter your idea of rest, our mission is to bring you the best experience possible with individual attention to the details that matter most.

Timberlake's Restaurant is located in the original Manor House Estate dating back to 1842. The restaurant features three dining rooms, an intimate wine room, and waterfront dining on the patio. The charming and warmly outfitted Headwaters Pub is just inside Timberlake's main entrance.

Timberlake's menu is inspired by world-renowned North Carolina artist and designer Bob Timberlake's culinary favorites. From savory shrimp and salads of mountain-grown spinach, to pan-seared duck and roasted Carolina quail, each dish will be one worth savoring. Mouth-watering elk loin, seafood, poultry, vegetarian options and house made desserts will also tempt palates of all tastes. Expansive wine and cocktail options complement our food menus to create a purposefully-crafted dining experience.

Timberlake's Restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. Live music, bonfires, lakeside bar and s'mores accompany most weekend evenings.

Enjoy the option of our three different accommodation types. All three Chetola accommodation types include amenities such as full access to the fitness center, heated indoor pool, tennis courts, paddle boats, disc golf course, Spa at Chetola, Chetola Sporting Reserve, Timberlake's Restaurant, and much more.

Dress for comfort and flexibility (jeans, t-shirts, flannel shirts, etc.) and, most importantly, in layers. We have a saying in the mountains: "If you don't like the weather, just wait 10 minutes." Your guide will inform you of any particulars that may be needed pertaining to the season.

What to Bring:

Other:

Can guests bring a dog?
Several of our lodge rooms are dog-friendly, though a pet deposit will apply.

How far are you from Charlotte, NC?
We are located 88 miles from the Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

Can I fish year-round?
Yes, don’t let cold air or precipitation deter you! In fact, fishing during late fall, winter and early spring is considered some of the best fishing of the season. With fewer insects alive and active during colder temperatures, the fish are happy to bite at all the flies you throw.

Are any of the fishing locations handicapped accessible?
We are proud to be working with organizations such as Healing Waters that encourage those with special needs to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of being outdoors, working with others and experiencing the rejuvenating activity of fly fishing. We do our best to meet guests' requirements based on specific needs or limitations. We are currently working on a new section of water that is being specifically engineered for guests confined to wheelchairs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Time! Just returned from Chetola and all I can say is fantastic! Beautiful location, great service, and nice people. We had two great days floating the South Holston and the Watauga and an incredible day on the private water where my wife landed a 27 inch rainbow. Our guide for all three days was Dustin Coffey and he is truly world class. He is very knowledgeable about fishing the local waters and also has a wealth of information about the local lore. Dustin is very patient and a great teacher. If you have not visited Chetola to fish with Dustin then definitely add it to your bucket list. You won't be disappointed!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Big fish, great guide Dustin at Chetola took my 10 year old son and I on the "trophy trout" trip. It is an aptly named trip! We both caught several huge trout under the excellent guidance of Dustin. We had the time of our lives. My son recognizes he may never catch bigger trout again in his life (pretty insightful at 10!). I can't recommend Chetola and Dustin enough.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible float trip with Dustin Coffey!! This was the 4th fly fishing trip I enjoyed with Dustin Coffey. This time we fished in Johnson City, TN. He's an exceptionally patient man, eager to share his love of nature, fishing and safety with each of his clients. He always locates the right fishing spots. I catch many trout and am delighted each time I fish with Dustin. Individual attention and purposeful instruction are added benefits when fly fishing with Dustin, no matter the location. He's exceptional!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceeded all expectations!! We took two 1/2 day wading trips with Dustin and our fly fishing skills increased exponentially during those two sessions. We were able to transfer our learnings immediately back home in our local rivers. I would recommend the fishing excursions to anyone. Our next visit will include full day float trips and we can't wait!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great resort, fantastic guide We were looking for a place in the western NC mountains for a quick mid-week getaway and noticed Chetola Lodge on the Orvis site. Our 3br condo was very clean and quiet. The resort has a casual, family-friendly vibe. Breakfast buffet was reasonably priced with more than enough choices. Kids took a casting lesson, followed the next day by a father/son float trip down the Watauga, but under the guidance of Head Guide Dustin Coffey. He is a life-long local, chock full of the sort of inside tidbits that make fishing and sightseeing more enjoyable. Go there and experience it for yourself. It is a wonderful place with wonderful people.
