The Story

2010 Orvis-Endorsed Freshwater Fly-Fishing Guide of the Year. Our home is the Upper Delaware River system that forms the natural border between Pennsylvania and New York. Rated as one of the finest wild trout fisheries in the US, the Delaware system encompasses up to 80 miles of trout water that we fish by wading and driftboat. Rivers such as the East Branch, West Branch, Beaverkill, Willowemoc, Neversink, and Delaware are the birthplace of fly fishing in America. Join us for a day or more of exploring these waters. In the summer we also fly or spin fish for smallmouth bass on a section of river that has been rated in the top five smallmouth rivers. Corporate and private groups are welcome.

Date Range

Most years we're trout fishing by April 15, but when the spring comes early, we start early. Trout fishing goes through mid-October (sometimes later). Smallmouth bass fishing begins in late June and continues into October.

What is Provided to Customer

On all our trips we provide the use of any necessary tackle. On full-day trips lunch and soft drinks are provided. We always have the right flies should you not have them. Loaner waders are also available depending on sizing. But, most of all, our commitment to do the best we can for you!

Region/Terrain Where You Fish

The Upper Delaware System offers the experience of big river wild trout fishing and wade fishing in small to medium-sized water, some with the feel and technicality of a spring creek. With few exceptions, the rivers and streams are easily waded with an easy bottom and slow-to-medium currents. We fish via driftboat, wading, or driftboat and wading. It all depends on the river and water conditions.

Typical Weather by Season

The season here begins in April, where you can experience several weather changes in just one day, so layering warm clothing and rain gear is a must. As the season progresses, you'll find May to be cool in the early part to warmer later in the month, but in all instances a fleece or jacket and rain gear should be with you on the water throughout the season. You'll find summertime evenings and mornings often dropping into the 50s.

What Should Customers Bring?

On our trips and on most others, you should bring sunglasses, rain jacket, hat, sunblock, leaders, waders, fishing tackle as appropriate, light jacket/fleece, and any other personal item you'd like to have along.

Sample of Typical Itinerary

A typical day on the water is anything but typical. The only absolute we have found in fly fishing is that things change. For this reason it's best if you have a flexible start and finish time in order to take full advantage of what the fishing conditions offer. In any event, a full-day fishing trip is no less than 8 hours on the water. Having said that, here are a few expectations for an itinerary. In April plan on starting around 9am and finishing at dusk. By May the start time will probably adjust to 10am with a dusk ending and by summer you'll be looking at starting about 11 or 12. We also sometimes suggest split days (early morning and late afternoon) when conditions warrant it and it fits our client’s schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Do you provide lodging?
A. We are not in the lodging business but can arrange lodging for you if needed.

Species You Fish for by Season

In April and continuing into October the insects begin hatching and bring the on the dry-fly action. Early season fishing is drifting and often streamer fishing until any early hatches start. From late April through October the Delaware system is known for its excellent dry-fly fishing but when the fish are not on the surface we also use various nymphing techniques, wet flies, and streamers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another great day I've been fishing with Joe for about 15 years. His knowledge of the river and his ability to locate fish always amazes me. I've fished with many guides in different parts of the country and he is head and shoulders above them all. Always look forward to fishing with Joe.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great couple days on the Deleware with Luc Enjoyed two days fly fishing while celebrating our 5 year anniversary together Cross Current guide Luc Genovesi did a great job getting us refreshed for our first season outing and helped us on our technique and getting us into some nice fish. We really appreciated the combination of his laid back low pressure style, great attitude and experience/knowledge. Helped Margaret relax and get dialed in for both dry fly and nymph hook ups. We had as good an experience as we could hope for and look forward to our next trip.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Marty Yi is an awesome guide I’ve fished with a lot of leading guides on the Delaware, the Snake, the Henry’s Fork, Montauk, and more. My day with Marty Yi was one of my most memorable. He worked hard to put me on great spots and he switched seamlessly between the streamer game and the dry flies: I threw big streamers while he hunted heads. Can’t say enough about Marty and Cross Current.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Floats w/ Anita Coulton I started floating w/ Anita last summer. I've been fishing 7-8 yrs now so still a rookie, but passionate about learning this amazing sport. I've floated w/ her 4 times since last summer and can't wait for more. Anita is an educator, which she tells me she loves to do, and it shows. I can get frustrated quite easily, and she can talk me down and refocus me. She has helped me grow and I am so grateful. I was warned how difficult this river can be. These fish are smart and not easily fooled. Anita will get you to the fish. Anita will help hone your skills to get you those fish. Anita will encourage you that you will get THAT fish, you know the one. That fatty that got away as the sun set that night....I'll get HIIM in her net someday. I just know it ....she'll get me there. The crew at Cross Currents is top notch. I can't recommend them highly enough.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't hesitate! My 15yo son Jake pushed me to book a trip with Joe D and Cross Current after watching the Hook Shots episode on mousing the Delaware. While we didn't mouse, our mid-October day-long float trip with guide Zach Anderson was awesome! Zach put us on fish, gave us direction without being overbearing and checked in with us regularly to make sure we were having the experience we wanted. Highly recommend both Cross Current and Zach!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fishing w/ my sons My sons and I went smallmouth bass fishing this past wknd. Our guide Zach Anderson was an unbelievable match for our group. Zach, myself and my 2 boys laughed all day. Zach put us on fish all day, we consistently tried different methods and lures until we figured out what the fish were biting. Not only did we fish but our day on the water was educational, we learned the history of the region, we learned how the other species of fish react and at what times of the year. My sons loved Zach !!!! I would recommend Zach over and over plus Cross Current and the operation Joe runs ,,,,,Top Notch Stay Safe, Fish Hard Jimmy

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another great trip Recently my wife and I spent a few days on the Upper Delaware. Given it is summer we expected challenging technical fishing. My wife is still in her first few years of fishing and I am always looking to expand my skills, so having a day on the water with Anita Coulton was invaluable for us. She is a great guide and teacher and really helped my wife hone her skills. For a hot summer day we we lucky to have Anita put us on a few spots with many opportunities. Lastly she is a great person. At one point we realized that someone upriver must have capsized. Anita pulled us over so that we could hike upstream and check on lone person who was fishing from a raft. It epitomizes who she is as a person and guide. Prior to this trip my wife spent a day at the 50/50 class with Anita and I attended her tight line nymphing class. To sum it up, we had a great day with Anita who is not just a great guide, but also great teacher and person.
