The Story

Go fly-fishing in Montana and stay at Orvis-endorsed Hubbard's Yellowstone Lodge. Whether it's helping to land the catch of a lifetime, revealing the wonders of Yellowstone National Park, or simply putting an extra log on the fire on a chilly Montana evening, Hubbard's Yellowstone Lodge and its dedicated staff set themselves apart by creating experiences and memories for their guests that last a lifetime. Established in 1987, Hubbard's Yellowstone Lodge came to be after owner Jim Hubbard came to the Paradise Valley with a dream of establishing a cattle ranch. The Valley sits along the Yellowstone River where wily trout rise throughout the day, and is held gently between two stunning snow capped mountain ranges that stand almost as sentinels, guarding the Valley and its beautiful "trouty" secrets. After arriving, Jim quickly realized the potential that the Paradise Valley held for sportsmen. He acquired an outfitter license and expanded his ranch by converting it into a lodge, wishing to share in the wealth of the valley by helping others realize their own Montana dreams.

Hubbard's is still being run by Jim and his family and welcomes guests from all points of the globe. Having built a ranch that was shaped lovingly out of the Montana wilderness, the Hubbard family continue to maintain a joyful and adventurous lifestyle that they extend to both their staff and their guests. From its humble beginnings, Hubbard's Yellowstone Lodge has grown to be like the aptly named valley in which it was built; a true paradise. The lodge staff are both knowledgeable of the area and completely dedicated to meeting guests' every need. The lodge buildings are beautifully built, maintaining the rough grace and rustic beauty of the original cattle ranch, but with all the ambience and modern amenities of a four-star hotel. With posh and luxurious sleeping quarters, a fully furnished and comfortable main lodge, and an open dining room with stunning views of the surrounding mountains, and the Yellowstone river itself, guests at the lodge can have the best of both worlds; enjoying extravagant meals and accommodations while surrounded by untamed and seemingly endless wilderness.

Season:

Hubbard's is open to guests from June to September with prime fishing starting in mid-July. Early-season guests can experience views of snow-capped peaks and a variety of wildlife, while exploring small intimate creeks and even some larger lakes and ponds for hungry and very willing trout. With midsummer comes the hatches! From the salmon fly to the infamous 'hopper hatch', guests at this time have the chance to experience some of the best dry-fly fishing in the country. Late season at Hubbard's is beautiful, with the Aspens turning gold and the bugling of bull elk rolling through the valley. This is also trophy time, with some of the biggest fish of the season coming in late August and September.

Species:

Hubbard's Yellowstone Lodge is lucky enough to offer its guests chances to catch five different species of trout! On the Yellowstone River itself an angler can expect to catch nearly anything. From the iconic Yellowstone cutthroat, to voracious silver-sided rainbows, to big bellied butter-yellow browns. There is also always a chance for a hybrid cutbow. These aggressive crossbreeds of a cutthroat and a rainbow can grow to immense sizes and are coveted by anglers looking for a real fight. All four species can be caught in Yellowstone Park as well, along with the small but incredibly beautiful brook trout in certain waters. And of course, no trip to the Paradise Valley would be complete without landing a few Mountain Whitefish which can be found and caught almost anywhere.

Region/Terrain:

Hubbard's is located in Southwestern Montana, one of the jewels of the west. It's surrounded by the Northern Rocky Mountains. Beautiful spiraling peaks dot the landscape, intermittently dotted with lush and fertile valleys and thick forests of aspen and lodge pole pines. The area surrounding the lodge is everything one imagines when they envision Montana. A favorite for wildlife enthusiasts, guests at the lodge have a chance at spotting anything and everything. From eagles, deer, and elk, to bison, wolves, and grizzly bears, you never know what's going to show up around Hubbard's!

Typical Weather:

The weather around Hubbard's Yellowstone Lodge is highly varied. Though typically sunny and pleasantly warm, guests should always come prepared for unexpected and intense rainstorms throughout the season. Some have even the experienced the occasional snowstorm in the early and late season.

What is Provided:

There are two ways to experience Hubbard's Lodge. The first is a guided fishing package. This includes all lodging, all meals, and all guided fishing. The second is a lodging package. This includes all lodging and all meals and activities are added a la carte. Neither of these packages include transportation, beer and wine, or guide and house gratuity. There is an accommodation tax added to every bill that is $6 per person per night. Montana has no sales tax. Hubbard's Lodge provides all gear at no charge; that includes rod and reel, waders, flies, tippet, and leader.

Gear Recommendations:

Though Hubbard's has its own Orvis Pro Shop and its guides have more than enough equipment to accommodate their guests angling needs, they welcome and encourage guests to bring and use their own fly-fishing gear. For those wishing to do so, a 9 ft. 5 wt. rod and reel with a floating line is best. U.V. and insect-resistant clothing and a pair of waders with studded soles is also highly recommended. Anglers are also advised to bring hats, a good rain jacket, and a pair of polarized sunglasses when heading out into the field.

What to Bring:

Whether you are fishing, touring, or just enjoying the beautiful Montana scenery, it is advisable to pack for all types of weather. We suggest the layering'everything from shorts to t-shirts to pants to sweatshirts. Although it is unlikely, Montana has been known to see snow every month of the year. An afternoon shower is pretty common, so include some rain gear as well. Dinner dress is always comfortable casual.

Don't forget the sunscreen, sunglasses (polarized), lip balm, and a hat is always good.

If you do happen to forget anything, our fly shop has just about anything you might need.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All-Time Favorite I am looking forward to returning to Hubbard's Lodge for my eighth consecutive visit. Need I say more? I have been privileged to be able to share this experience with my daughter and granddaughter, my son and daughter-in-law and my best fishing buddy. The guide service is outstanding. They are very friendly, dedicated and extremely knowledgeable. My fishing experiences have been First Class, rivaled only by the accommodations, food and hospitality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First Class Operation, Great Fishing Hubbards is everything I could ask for. Superb environment, really helpful guides and an abundance of challenging fishing. Food and accommodation are top notch. My wife fishes only half our stay and she loves to come back . Don't need to be a compulsive fly caster to enjoy Hubbards. A lot going on to visit and areas to relax. This is unique. Most outfitters offer little for the non fisherman.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Experience! 3 years ago I was in search of a Montana Lodge who I could work with to bring my corporate group incentive clients, and I found Hubbard's. The past 2 years with 6 client groups operated I'm happy to report that every one of our guests have repeatedly told us that the trip to Hubbard's was the most amazing travel experience they have ever had. It starts with the 'Hubbard Family' and I mean everyone...Hubbard family members and the entire lodge team. They make the experience! The location of the lodge (not too far from Bozeman and an airport) and a choice of activities (world-class trout fishing; horseback riding and personalized tours into Yellowstone), adds to high appeal we've had with our groups. We're back in 2020 with 2 more client groups and we know exactly what they'll say at the end of the program! Thanks Hubbard's and keep doing what you do!
