The Story

Enjoy the Orvis-endorsed lodge at Nemacolin on your fly-fishing excursion to Pennsylvania. The Orvis-Endorsed fly-fishing program at Nemacolin is extremely unique. We are blessed to have multiple freestone streams and tail water rivers between Southwestern Pennsylvania and Western Maryland. This allows us the opportunity for true year-round trout fishing, targeting native, wild, and stocked trout. The diversity of rivers and streams gives us the ability to cater to all levels of fly-fishing experience and ability. Part of what makes fly fishing at Nemacolin a true world-class experience is our recently renovated/restored half-mile of trout stream, Meadow Run. This stretch of water is exclusive to clients fishing with Nemacolin guides. This allows us to provide a truly private fly-fishing experience for our clients. The work Clearwater Restorations provided created optimal trout habit and holding water, without compromising the natural look of the stream.

We are one of 15 locations for the 2-Day Orvis Fly-Fishing School. We offer half- and full-day guided fishing trips by reservation, both floating and walk/wade.

Our skilled guides pride their intimate knowledge of all our rivers and streams in the Laurel Highlands, and their ability to teach and instruct all levels of anglers. We specialize in making memories and providing an angling experience that would rival anything in the world. So, if you are looking to improve on your angling ability, start your fly-fishing journey, or just enjoy seeing/fishing new water, all coupled with a world class resort, please allow the Orvis-endorsed guides at Nemacolin to assist you in all of the above.

Please note, you must for an overnight resort guest at Nemacolin or a resort member of Nemacolin to partake in our activities and amenities, including the Orvis-Endorsed Lodge.

Nemacolin features a variety of onsite restaurants and lounges from fine dining at Lautrec to family favorites at the Tavern. Lautrec has made the elite list of Forbes Five Star and Triple A Five Diamond restaurants. One of only 30 in the world, Lautrec truly is one of the finest dining experiences in the country. Dive into the tastes of the sea at Aqueous or enjoy fine cuts of beef and wild game at Rockwell’s.

Nemacolin features deluxe guestrooms, suites, private homes and estates, including Frank Lloyd Wright inspired Falling Rock boutique hotel, recipient of the coveted Triple A Five Diamond award and Forbes Five Star award. Stay at the Chateau or Falling Rock Boutique or for a more private experience, stay in one of our private homes or estates, including Greystone or Mallard’s Landing.

Season:

All year-round.

Species:

Trout, year-round: This is true match-the-hatch fishing. We see multiple species/hatches of mayflies, caddisflies, stoneflies, and midges. We will target fish using multiple techniques.

Mid/late summer: We also will target smallmouth bass. This is done with streamers or popping bugs.

Late spring/summer: We will target carp if the client is interested. This is done by sight casting to mudding/feeding fish with various carp patterns (stillwater).

Summer: Pond fishing for bass and pan-fish (usually reserved for our younger fishing guests).

Region/Terrain:

Nemacolin is situated in the Laurel Highlands region of Southwestern Pennsylvania. The elevation of our fisheries is between 1700-2300 feet, which means they contain mostly cold water fish (Rainbow, Brown, and Brook Trout). Due to the high elevation of the property the terrain can vary heavily from steep wooded hillsides to flat shrub floodplains. Rhododendron and Mountain Laurel are the primary forms of vegetation that line the sides of our streams and rivers. We fish multiple types of water from small mountain headwaters to large fast flowing tail waters. The area truly exemplifies the beauty of fishing in the Appalachian Mountains.

We provide a private fly-fishing experience at Meadow Run, our exclusive half mile of private stocked water. This medium classic, free stone stream has been restored to provide a sustainable environment for trout. It is an excellent place to learn the art of fly fishing, and catch a lot of fish in the process. Ohiopyle State Park also contains a large portion of Meadow Run, along with other great fisheries. The park is only 15 minutes from the main resort property, and has a multitude of public water.

The Nemacolin fly shop has float and wade services available on the Youghiogheny River and surrounding headwaters. The 'Yough River' is an excellent spring trout fishery, and is available for full or half day adventures. We also offer wading trips on the Casselman River, which is our only true warm water fishery in the region. The Youghiogheny River is controlled by dam and fishing success often dependent on water release. This means the spring and early summer are the most productive seasons to book a trip. Our Orvis Endorsed Guides are also licensed to take full and half day trips into Western Maryland, only a 45 minute drive from property. Maryland is home to one of the only wild trophy trout streams in the east, along with other amazing fisheries

Rated 5 out of 5 by from OUTSTANDING! Outstanding is the one word I would use to describe the fly fishing experience with Mike. This is the 3rd time I’ve hired Mike as a guide, and my wife and I are already trying to figure out how to book another trip with him. He is incredibly knowledgeable, extremely patient, and possesses extraordinary teaching skills. On top of all that, he’s just a very nice person. I’m confident that regardless of your skill level, you will enjoy fly fishing with Mike.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very helpful and attentive. Would highly recommend The entire experience at Nemacolin was amazing. Mike did a wonderful job teaching the class and all of it's contents. He was very patient with me, and took the time to correct my mistakes. I am sure it would have been easy to let a few things slide, however he continued to work on my cast until it was correct. I sincerely appreciate the time he took to help me, and his enthusiasm for the sport. Mike is truly an asset to Orvis, Nemacolin, and this entire program. THANK YOU!!

We were on the fish all day, and had an awesome time fishing multiple locations. Mike is without a doubt one of the best guides I have had the privilege of fishing with. We truly enjoyed our trip and look forward to heading back again next year! Thanks so much for the great memories Mike!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic experience from start to finish My wife booked a full day at the Nemacolin Lodge as a surprise for my mine and my brother in law’s birthdays, and a new tradition has been born!! First class from start to finish. We arrived early and started with skeet shooting in the morning. My bro in law and I both love bird hunting, and and our Guide, Stan, was able to provide expert coaching and some easy to remember tips and tricks to hit more clays, and hopefully more birds this Fall. It was the perfect way to start the day. After woofing down some gourmet burgers at The Tavern, we headed back to the Lodge for our afternoon Guided Fly Fishing tour with Mike Steiner. I have very limited experience with fly fishing, and my bro in law was a complete rookie. We weren’t sure what to expect, but we were excited to learn and had high hopes. Luckily, Mike is a true pro and takes a lot of pride in explaining the philosophy and techniques needed to get on more fish. With his expert advice and patience, it wasn’t long until we were getting bites and landing some beautiful trout. Our afternoon quickly turned into a competition, with each new fishing hole bringing more action. It seemed that every fish got bigger and bigger, but Mike assured us that this wasn’t always the case. It must’ve been the magical combination of beginners luck, a beautiful day, and a great coach that all came together to provide us with an experience that we’ll never forget. We’ll definitely be back!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Spectacular Outing My wife and I chose a guided fly fishing tour at the Case Brown location, and every aspect of the experience was perfect. Mike, our guide, provided exceptional service in arranging our outing, and our time with him on site was a pure delight. Mike is a patient and thoughtful teacher, very encouraging and engaging, not to mention personable and just an all-around good person. It’s clear that he wants you to have the best experience possible, and he was genuinely excited at how much my wife and I both loved our time there. It certainly doesn’t hurt that the setting is perfect - kudos for how well and thoughtfully crafted the site truly is. The land and water are easily navigable, and incredibly peaceful and picturesque. It’s a beautiful experience that I will never forget, and will keep fresh in my memory every time I venture out to build on the great knowledge Mike imparted.
