The Story

Join Orvis for unforgettable fly fishing on a group trip to Iceland: Fish Partner and Orvis Adventures have come together to offer anglers a chance to experience one of Iceland’s best-kept secrets, sea-run brown trout. Come experience an exclusive fishery in a recently remodeled Icelandic farmhouse, wedged between ancient lava, Europe’s largest glacier, and epic scenery. Fish Partner, an Orvis-Endorsed Outfitter, has made exclusive contracts with landowners in Southern Iceland for anglers to come experience some of the best sea-run brown trout waters in Iceland. Iceland offers some of the best sea trout (ocean-run native brown trout) fishing in the world in a unique, picturesque location that will give anglers an incomparable experience of a lifetime. Renowned for its striking beauty and unique landscape, much of this region was carved out by one of the deadliest super-eruptions in history. The fishery is made up of three rivers, Vatnamot, Fossalar, and Geirlandsa, each offering a unique fishing experience. These rivers have been closed to the public and in the hands of local fishing clubs for decades. All the fishing on these exclusive beats will be for fly fishing only and catch-and-release done exclusively from Battle Hill Lodge.

Battle Hill Lodge is around 260km or a 3-hour drive from Reykjavik and the rivers are about 10 minutes east of the town of Kirkjubaejarklaustur. Battle Hill lodge is an old farmhouse newly renovated for the inaugural first season in 2022. It is cozy with Icelandic charm and located on the banks of the Fossalar river. Orustuóll, as it is called in Icelandic, is named after a great battle in this exact spot where Hróars Tungugoði, a famed Icelandic Viking Chieftain of the 10th century, fought and lost against his adversary tribe. Now this historic area is a full-service lodge that offers two single rooms and four double rooms on two floors allowing for a maximum occupancy of 10. While the rooms do not have private baths, it provides three bathrooms for the group. Enjoy a drink or two after a long day of fishing, while taking in the beauty of the Vatnjökull Glacier, lava fields, and the flowing river that surrounds the lodge.

September 2nd: ARRIVAL

We strongly encourage guests to arrive the day before their trip starts. Reykjavik is a great city to walk around in and has many nice hotels and fabulous restaurants. Arriving a day early will ensure you’re well-rested for your first day of fishing. On the first day of the trip, September 2nd, a shuttle will pick guests up in Reykjavík city or Keflavík airport around 10 AM and transfer the group to Battle Hill Lodge (approx. travel time 3 hours). Once there, guests will settle in at the lodge, have lunch, and head out to fish. Dinner at 8 pm.

September 3rd – 7th: FIVE FULL DAYS OF FISHING

Breakfast will be served around 8 AM. Following breakfast, guests will then head out fishing. Lunch is usually packed and eaten on the river or had back at the lodge around 1 PM. Dinner will be served around 8 PM. The fishing is all relatively close, and the closest beats are a 10–15 minute drive from the lodge, while the headwaters and other waters can be 60 minutes, at the furthest. Most fishing is done by rotating between the different beats of the main rivers closest to the lodge; Vatnamót, Fossálar, and Geirlandsa. All are all part of the same watershed and have a variety of situations where two-handed Spey rods and single-handed rods may be used. Based on availability and water conditions, guests may also fish Tungufljót, Grenlækur, Ásgarður, and Jónskvísl, which are other nearby sea-run brown trout fisheries managed by Fish Partner. There are other fisheries that have char, salmon, and native brown trout; they are a little further away but manageable at about 45 minutes to an hour each way.

September 8th: DEPARTURE

Breakfast will be served around 8 AM. Guests will get to fish in the morning followed by lunch at 12 PM. After lunch, guests will pack up and head to Reykjavík to overnight or head home.

The Vatnamot is one of the most famous sea-trout fisheries in Iceland. Vatnamot means ‘a junction’ in Icelandic. This place is often called the junction of the junctions in Iceland. This is where Fossalar, Geirlandsa, and Horgsa rivers meet the Mighty Skafta. Each year, there have been up to 2,000 sea trout caught on five rods and the beat is around 5 km long. The Fossalar is also nearby and is extremely beautiful with diverse pools. It is about 15 km of water and is fished with five rods max. Fish Partner does not have exact numbers of fish caught, but the river is full of big and beautiful sea trout during the season. Part of the Fossalar river is on UNESCO's natural heritage site list, so you can imagine the beauty in this area. The rivers run in a volcanic basin, so you will experience fishing in lava fields and along black sand riverbanks. This area is best to fish with double-handed rods and swing flies and is productive nymphing with single-handed rods through some extremely good-looking pools.

What skill level is suggested?

All skill levels are welcome but having experience fishing with single and/or double-handed rods will increase your odds of landing sea-run brown trout. There are not a lot of high banks or objects behind you, so casting is easy. Be prepared for wind!

How strenuous are the activities?

The trip can be tailored to an individual's fitness level. All fishing is wade fishing and rivers are easy to wade in. There are not a lot of vertical hikes, most fishing is done on flat, riverside banks.

Is this a child-friendly trip?

Battle Hill Lodge welcomes families with teen kids who love the outdoors. They do not have childcare facilities here and it is not suitable for small children. Parents should use their discretion regarding their children's level of maturity and patience if they will be joining the trip as an angler.

What other activities are available?

This trip is focused on fishing only.

What is the typical weather?

The average daytime temperature around the coast from May to September is 10-12°C (50-55°F). A warm summer day will have a temperature of around 20°C (68°F). The average daily sunshine in July and August is 5–6 hours and during the summer months the night is bright. On clear days you have 24 hours of daylight and the midnight sun near the Arctic Circle. However, the weather is extremely changeable and unpredictable, so you should always be prepared for the unexpected. It's best to check the local weather forecast just prior to your trip for the most accurate weather conditions.

What gear do you recommend?

A detailed packing list will be sent to guests upon booking.
