The Story

Choose Orvis-endorsed outfitter Fish Partner for your fly fishing trip to Iceland. In addition to the abundance of big fish and amazing rivers and lakes, Icelandic fishing is primarily known for exclusivity. All fishing rights in Iceland are privately owned and mostly leased to outfitters. All rivers and lakes are controlled by limitations of rods, and some with catch-and-release and fly fishing only. Anglers can, therefore, know exactly what to expect. No need to wake up in the middle of the night and race to your favorite spot—it is reserved for you throughout the day!

Fish Partner is Iceland’s leading fly fishing outfitter, offering anglers access to some of the country’s most exclusive waters and experiences. Fish Partner arranges guided day tours, DIY trips, lodge stays and custom travel itineraries throughout Iceland.

  • The Highlands – Vast, uninhabited, and wild, the Highlands are Iceland’s heart. Shaped by fire and ice, the terrain features lava deserts, glacial rivers, moss-covered canyons, and untouched lakes. Here, anglers target large brown trout and Arctic char in clear, remote waters for a true wilderness experience.
  • Long Valley (Blanda and surroundings) – Set in a fertile valley, this area blends dramatic mountain scenery with salmon-rich rivers and diverse multi-species opportunities. It is also an excellent base for non-angling guests to explore Iceland’s countryside.
  • Battle Hill region – Famous for its spring and fall sea-run brown trout fishing, this area combines rolling farmland and coastal river valleys with striking natural contrasts. Nearby are glaciers, black sand deserts, and lava fields, giving anglers the chance to pursue powerful trout in productive waters against a backdrop that is uniquely Icelandic.
  • Lake Thingvallavatn – Iceland’s largest natural lake and home to the legendary “ice age” brown trout, some of the biggest wild trout in the world. Anglers here can target truly trophy-sized fish, averaging around 8 pounds and often exceeding 20, in gin-clear waters surrounded by volcanic cliffs, lava formations, and breathtaking scenery.

Anglers fishing with Fish Partner can expect to experience some of the best trout, char, and salmon streams in the world, guided by Iceland’s most experienced professionals, all in the midst of one of the most scenic landscapes on earth.

Orvis is pleased to offer our travel customers access to two valuable services: Global Rescue travel membership and IMG Signature Travel Insurance℠.

What To Bring

Anglers should bring warm layers of clothes and wind and waterproof jackets. A camera is also recommended, to capture all the beauty.

Gear Recommendations

For fishing for trout and char in Iceland in general 5 wt. and 6 wt. rods are recommended. Be prepared for nymphing, dry-fly fishing and streamer fishing. Tippet sizes of 3X-5X are most common. For ice age browns in Lake Thingvallavatn and for Atlantic Salmon 6 wt. to 8 wt. rods are recommended (single-handed although some big salmon rivers require two-handed rods).

Species

Iceland is home to five freshwater fish species, four of which are highly valued by fly anglers: Atlantic salmon, brown trout, Arctic char, and sea-run brown trout—all members of the salmonid family.

Brown Trout
Brown trout thrive in countless rivers and lakes across Iceland. The country is especially renowned for the massive “ice age” trout of Lake Thingvallavatn, landlocked during the last glacial period. These trout average around 8 pounds, regularly top 20 pounds, and can exceed 30 pounds. Elsewhere, brown trout typically range from 2–5 pounds and provide excellent sport on lighter tackle.

Sea-Run Brown Trout (Sea Trout)
Iceland’s sea-run browns are a special attraction, particularly in rivers around Battle Hill Lodge, where anglers can target chrome-bright fish fresh from the ocean.

Arctic Char
Arctic char are the most widespread freshwater species in Iceland, found in lakes, streams, and glacial rivers across the island. Averaging 1–4 pounds, with Highland fish often in the 3-pound range, char offer spectacular sport in gin-clear waters. Iceland also holds strong runs of sea-run Arctic char, which add another exciting dimension to the fishery.

Atlantic Salmon
Iceland is one of the world’s premier Atlantic salmon destinations, and Fish Partner now operates Long Valley Lodge, a dedicated salmon and multi-species lodge. From here, anglers can pursue Atlantic salmon in the Blanda River and its tributaries, along with a variety of other species nearby. Fish Partner’s salmon programs combine first-class guiding, access to productive beats, and comfortable lodging in one of Iceland’s most scenic valleys.

Season

The fishing season in Iceland runs April 1st through October 31. However, each river or lake has a different season and waters are simply closed for the off-season. Prime-time differs quite a bit between waters and species. For example, the prime time for the big ice age trout of lake Thingvallavatn is April-June and September, while the prime time for the Highland rivers of Kaldakvísl and Tungnaá is June-August.
