The Story

Nestled among the cottonwoods along the legendary Bighorn River, Eagle Nest Lodge is a premier destination for discerning anglers and wingshooters seeking an authentic Western sporting experience grounded in excellence, tradition, and stewardship.

Selected among the inaugural group of lodges to receive an endorsement from Orvis for fly fishing excellence, Eagle Nest Lodge further distinguished itself as the first Orvis-Endorsed lodge for wingshooting — becoming the first operation to achieve dual endorsements for both fly fishing and wingshooting. This rare distinction reflects an unwavering commitment to professional guide standards, exceptional sporting experiences, and meticulous hospitality.

Owned by Sofia and Tony Brookfield, the lodge reflects a vision that blends refined hospitality with Montana’s rugged beauty. Conservation lies at the heart of that vision. Tony serves on the National Board of Trustees for Trout Unlimited and is the former Chairman of the Board for California Trout. His leadership in coldwater conservation, habitat restoration, and fisheries stewardship underscores the lodge’s deep and ongoing commitment to protecting the rivers and landscapes that define the sporting life.

Lodge Manager Zac Hearon brings 19 years of guiding and lodge management experience. An Afghanistan veteran, Zac has guided both big game and upland bird, as well as the majority of Montana’s storied rivers. His depth of knowledge, steady leadership, and passion for the outdoors shape every guest experience at Eagle Nest Lodge. He takes great pride in welcoming new clients and building lasting relationships with sportsmen and women from around the world.

At Eagle Nest Lodge, river, wing, and heritage converge — where excellence is tradition and conservation is legacy.

Orvis is pleased to offer our travel customers access to two valuable services: Global Rescue travel membership and IMG Signature Travel Insurance℠.

The Lodge

Eagle Nest Lodge is a large log lodge. It has 7 bedrooms, two beds per room, with private bath. Our maximum number of guests is 14. Robes and blow dryers are provided.

The large, screened porch, complete with log furniture and an old-time swing, provides a quiet evening retreat where guests can unwind from the aggravations of the "real world." Eagle Nest has always presented an atmosphere that encourages relaxation and camaraderie. Relax in the hot tub after a day on the water and enjoy our beautiful Big Sky Country.

Food & Drink

Dining at Eagle Nest has always been a prominent element of every guest's stay. Our dining room is a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere that fosters an air of fellowship among people who share common interests. Our most commonly asked question from returning guests is: "Is your chef still there?" “Yes, Sherri our chef has been with us since June of 2002. Need we say more? The food is incredible!” Every morning is started with a made-to-order breakfast including eggs Benedict, pancakes, eggs, oatmeal, well, you get the idea. Lunch is served in the field.

Returning to the lodge for the evening cocktail, you'll enjoy appetizers among friends, followed by an amazing dinner of rack of lamb, beef tenderloin, salmon—always followed by a homemade dessert. Sherri's creme brûlée is one of the best you'll ever have.

Alcohol is not provided as we are on a dry Indian Reservation, however you are welcome to bring your own!

Season

Fishing: April-Thanksgiving
Bird Hunting: September-Thanksgiving

Species

The Bighorn River is teaming with rainbow and brown trout. The Bighorn River provides excellent fishing April through November. As a tailwater fishery, heavy runoff is never a problem, making it one of the few fisheries where fishing is as good in April and May as it is during summer and fall. The Bighorn averages between 4,000-6,000 trout per mile.

Here's a general description on hatches: Of course, never guaranteed!

  • April: Baetis starting. Usually great dry fly fishing.
  • May: Beaetis is in full swing, possibly some midges around. This typically is the best all-around month for dry flies and nymphing.
  • June: This is the best month for nymph fisherman. Beginner's month!
  • July: PMD's and yellow Sallies. Hoppers at the end of the month. Sallies can be great this time of year. Good month for novice and advanced anglers.
  • August: Tricos usually here and some black caddis. Sometimes some Sallies. Hoppers. Great time for novice and advanced anglers.
  • September: Tricos and caddis.
  • October: Some fall baettis and some tricos. Streamer fishing.
  • November: Streamers and nymphs. Brown's are spawning and are beautiful.

Region/Terrain

Bighorn River: We combine float fishing from McKenzie-style drift boats with traditional stalk and wade techniques.

What airport do we fly into?

Billings, MT. We are a 45-minute drive from the airport.

Do you provide equipment?

Yes, at no extra cost. We provide all rods, reels, waders, boots, flies, and tackle.

Do you provide alcohol?

No, we are located on the Crow Reservation. The reservation is a dry reservation, therefore it is illegal for us to provide. However, you are more than welcome to bring your own.

How are you with beginner fisherman?

We have lots of beginner fisherman and our guides are fantastic. The majority of our guides and staff have been with us for over 18 years. They are great with beginners and advanced fisherman alike.

What sections of the river do you float?

That would depend on the condition of the water and hatches. Our typical float is anywhere from 10-13 miles per day. During summer and fall months we fish the lower Bighorn River which is virtually deserted and provides some of the best hopper and streamer fishing on the Bighorn. And almost always the biggest fish!

Do you have cell service and wifi?

Yes.

How are the mosquitoes in the summer?

We spray for mosquitoes so usually not an issue here at the lodge. Typically they won't bother you on the water.

Why should I book at Eagle Nest Lodge?

There are great choices along the Bighorn River. However, we believe we offer a unique experience which is why we have been so successful with our repeat guests. The majority of our staff and guides have been with us for over 17 years. We encourage our guides and staff to get to know our guests. You're more than welcome to come into the kitchen to talk to Sherri, our chef and check out what's for dinner. Our guides enjoy coming back to the lodge after a day of fishing and spending time with guests on the back patio. John and Rebecca enjoy appetizers and dinner with you in the evening. We strive for great service and hospitality. Sure there is great fishing on the Bighorn, but it's the whole package that brings you back. We hope to see you here on the Horn!
