The Story

Float and fish with Orvis-Endorsed Guide Ed Reposa of Lupo Fly Fishing through forests and farmland on the scenic Connecticut River in the Upper Valley region of New Hampshire and Vermont. Ed’s “home waters,” stretching between Piermont and Walpole, NH add up to more than 60 river miles of meandering, unpressured water forming the border between New Hampshire and Vermont. On most days, Ed and his guests feel like they have the whole river to themselves—gliding downstream in a comfortable 16' StealthCraft® raft and seeing more eagles and ospreys than boats.

This section of the Connecticut River through central and southern New Hampshire is an exceptional smallmouth bass fishery, and that is the primary focus. The bass here are almost always looking up and willing to take terrestrials and poppers off the surface from spring through fall, and they’ll chase streamers for most of the season. There are also seasonal opportunities for northern pike, as well as trout in tributaries and stillwaters.

As a full-service fly fishing guide, Ed tailors each trip to match the skill level of his clients, regardless of experience. A natural-born teacher, he began guiding in part to bring more people into the sport—absolute beginners are some of his favorite clients. No one is born knowing how to do this, and everyone deserves the chance to learn and enjoy the outdoors. Whether it’s your first cast or you’re a seasoned angler, contact Ed for an educational and fun day on the water.

We fish the Connecticut River in the Upper Valley region of New Hampshire and Vermont, along with tributaries, ponds, and lakes throughout the area. The water is just 25 minutes from Dartmouth College and 30 minutes from the scenic town of Woodstock, VT. The river runs north to south between the White Mountains of New Hampshire to the east and the Green Mountains of Vermont to the west.

The scenery is a mix of forested banks, open farmland, floodplains, and historic villages. Often, we’re fishing in the shadow of Mount Ascutney or floating beneath the longest covered bridge in New England.

Seasons & Species

Main Season: April 15–November 1
Early and late in the season, there are opportunities for pike and trout in rivers and ponds. As the season progresses and smallmouth finish spawning, the focus shifts almost exclusively to smallmouth bass.

Shoulder Seasons (when conditions allow):

  • March 1–April 15: If boat ramps aren’t iced in and water levels are safe, trips may target pre- and post-spawn pike and trout.
  • November 1–December 15: Access and float options become limited as some gates are locked and smallmouth migrate to winter holding areas. Half-day trips are the norm.

Half-Day Smallmouth Bass Float Trip (up to 2 people): $375
Full-Day Smallmouth Bass Float Trip (up to 2 people): $500
