In western New Mexico, the HY Ranch offers a rugged, remote hunt for Gambel’s and Mearns quail. This property delivers a challenging adventure with rustic accommodations, rocky mountainous terrain, and true backcountry solitude. Private ranch hunts are offered in limited numbers.

Lodging on our eastern New Mexico ranch is provided onsite in a historic ranch house converted into a lodge that accommodates up to six guests. Meals are prepared by our in-house chef. The lodge includes one private bedroom, one room with two beds, and a bunk room, along with two full baths, laundry facilities, a spacious bar and living area, as well as a large dining room. The lodge is off the beaten path, and cell service can be limited, though high-speed internet is available.
Lodging on our western New Mexico ranch is rustic and remote. The bunkhouse, originally built in the 1960s, is still used during cattle drives in this rugged part of the ranch. Reaching the property requires traveling 12 miles of dirt road. The bunkhouse accommodates up to six hunters in two primary bedrooms and one large bunkroom.
New Mexico ranch hunts are all-inclusive, including meals and lodging. Contact us for details or visit lunaritaoutfitters.com.
Lodging at our lodge can be arranged for off-ranch hunts.
All hunts begin around sunrise. Off-ranch hunts include lunch in the field, while all-inclusive ranch hunts include lunch at the lodge. Hunts typically wrap up around 4 PM to allow birds time to covey up before evening.
New Mexico quail species include:
Eastern New Mexico is dominated by the flat, high-elevation plains of the Great Plains region, featuring shortgrass prairie and rolling sandhills at elevations often exceeding 4,000 feet. If bringing your own dogs, please be aware that there are sand burrs and porcupines in some areas. Travel times for ranch hunts are typically 10–30 minutes from lodging, while public land hunt travel times generally range from 25–45 minutes.
Winter temperatures typically range from 20°F to 75°F. Mornings can be chilly, so we recommend dressing in layers.

Distances vary year to year based on bird concentration, but plan for approximately 8–10 miles per day.
Certainly. We recommend that your dog be snake-trained and social with other dogs if you plan to run with ours.
No. Hunts take place on national forest, state lands, and private leases, and all hunting is done on foot.
The weather in New Mexico can vary significantly from week to week and even day to day. We typically avoid early-season hunts due to heat and snake activity. Any time from November 15 through the end of the season is generally an excellent time to hunt.
We like to start early. Hunters are typically picked up around 6:45–7 AM and driven to the selected hunting area. Most days begin hunting by 8 AM, break for lunch in the field midday, and continue until around 4 PM. This schedule gives birds time to covey up again before dark and remain undisturbed near roosting time.
