100% customer satisfaction has been our commitment since 1856. It's who we are. If you aren't happy with a product or service, we want to know about it. And we'll make it right.
THAT'S THE ORVIS WAY.
Patagonia Baker Lodge
Experience one of the most magical places on earth—the mighty Río Baker. Framed by glacier-capped peaks and fed by turquoise waters, it’s considered one of the most beautiful rivers in the world and one of Patagonia’s most famous for dry fly fishing for large trout.
The Baker and its surrounding waters are truly an angler’s paradise. Brown and rainbow trout average 18", with fish approaching 30" not uncommon. Whether casting dries or streamers, opportunities for unforgettable fish are abundant.
Patagonia Baker Lodge (PBL) sits directly on the river’s most productive stretch. This oversized timber-frame retreat offers breathtaking views from every room. As Orvis Chief Fly Fishing Enthusiast Tom Rosenbauer says, “The view from their porch may be the most spectacular of any fly fishing lodge in the world.”
With accommodations for just 12 guests, PBL blends world-class comfort, fine dining, and the renowned hospitality of the family-owned Magic Waters lodges. Recognized as an Orvis-Endorsed International Destination of the Year and featured in publications such as American Angler, Gray’s Sporting Journal, and The New York Times, the lodge is celebrated as much for its service as for its fishing.
Beyond the water, Patagonia Baker Lodge offers diverse experiences for anglers and non-anglers alike. Just minutes from Patagonia National Park, guests can enjoy hiking, birdwatching, rafting, kayaking, horseback riding, glacier tours, and visits to the Marble Caves. Whether you come to chase trout or to explore, every day here is unforgettable.
Orvis is pleased to offer our travel customers access to two valuable services: Global Rescue travel membership and IMG Signature Travel Insurance℠.

Our newly built lodge was designed with no detail spared to create the ultimate guest experience. This oversized timber-frame retreat features soaring 30-foot ceilings in the foyer and living area, massive 15x15 windows framing river views from every angle, and natural river-rock accents sourced locally. A grand fireplace anchors the space, while a 20-foot family-style dining table sets the scene for memorable meals. Rounding out the experience is a dedicated team of guides, cooks, hosts, and servers—whose warmth and hospitality quickly make them feel more like family than staff.
The main lodge houses six spacious bedrooms, each with river views, generous storage, two king-size beds, and en-suite bathrooms with walk-in showers—accommodating up to 12 anglers in comfort. Additional amenities include a riverside hot tub, fly tying station, large wader and gear room, and a covered drive for easy loading and unloading. A spectacular outdoor deck with comfortable seating offers the perfect vantage point to enjoy the river—whether you’re sipping morning coffee, sharing appetizers, or toasting the day with a pisco sour.
Our program at Patagonia Baker Lodge runs from Saturday to Saturday. Upon arrival, we’ll pick you up at Balmaceda Airport or in Coyhaique, and our staff will transport you to the lodge via the Carretera Austral (Southern Highway)—an incredibly scenic 4.5-hour drive through national parks and charming Chilean villages, with stops along the way. At the lodge, hosts Manuel Balboa and Manuela Apablaza will welcome you and prepare you for a relaxed afternoon and evening. Explore the lodge surroundings, make a few casts right out front, or simply unwind in the living room or on the deck and start living your dream. Enjoy cocktails and appetizers while dinner is being prepared, followed by a spectacular three-course meal. The staff and chefs at PBL take pride in attending to every detail, ensuring guests feel both comfortable and at home.
Your fishing days begin with coffee at 7 a.m. and breakfast at 7:30 a.m., featuring fresh juice, coffee, fruit, pastries, yogurt, cereals, homemade bread, and made-to-order eggs and proteins.
After breakfast, guests prepare for the day in the lodge’s spacious wader room. For those who prefer not to travel with their own gear, PBL provides Orvis rods, reels, waders, and boots, along with flies and terminal tackle. Fishing days typically run from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and include a hearty streamside lunch of soups, salads, stews, and sandwiches. Each day you’ll fish new waters, tailored to your preferences and skill level.
Upon returning to the lodge, you’ll be greeted with appetizers and beverages before dinner at 8 p.m. Every meal is a celebration of farm-to-table cuisine, blending Chilean, Patagonian, and international flavors. Expect Patagonian lamb, pasture-raised beef, fresh seafood, handmade pasta, and vegetables from nearby farms—all paired with a carefully chosen selection of Chile’s finest red and white wines.
Each evening, you and your guide will plan the next day’s adventure.
On your final morning, enjoy one last breakfast before our staff drives you back to Balmaceda Airport for your flight home.
Patagonia Baker Lodge sits in the heart of one of the most diverse and productive fishing regions in Chilean Patagonia, home to some of the largest brown and rainbow trout in the country. Options range from float trips on the mighty Baker River, to wading spring-creek-style waters, to fishing both small and large lakes—offering some of the best sight-fishing opportunities in Patagonia. Most fisheries are only minutes from the lodge, allowing you to maximize your time on the water. Target species include brown and rainbow trout, green perch, and cherry salmon, with the possibility of pursuing enormous king salmon in remote rivers.
The Baker is vast, flowing out of General Carrera Lake as a turquoise-blue, gin-clear river averaging 35,000 cfs. Despite its size, it’s remarkably fishable—and one of the finest dry-fly and sight-fishing rivers in the world. From the lodge deck, it’s common to see rainbow trout well over 20". The river’s rocky edges and seam lines are alive with feeding fish, while back eddies can hold dozens of rising rainbows. We offer walk-and-wade as well as jet-boat floats to put you on the best water. Browns over 24" are always in play on large terrestrials and streamers, while consistent rainbow activity means you can fish at a relaxed pace or stay out all day.
Flowing from nearby Cochrane Lake, this medium-sized river looks like a giant spring creek—gin-clear water, heavy weed beds, and deep undercut banks. It’s here that you’ll find massive brown trout from 4 to 8+ pounds, fueled by prolific hatches of caddis, mayflies, terrestrials, and forage fish. With its green-tinted clarity and rich structure, the Cochrane rivals New Zealand’s best trout rivers for sight-fishing. Walk-and-wade days typically cover just 1–2 km, with endless opportunities to target trout feeding on or near the surface.
The lodge’s lakes are a must for North American anglers. Clear-water lakes with rocky shoals provide world-class sight fishing, while tannic lakes come alive with dragonfly and damselfly hatches that trigger explosive surface takes. Expect leaping eats and visual dry-fly action that rivals New Zealand. Reed lines, weed beds, overhanging brush, and timbered shorelines create endless shallow-water habitat for cruising and rising trout.
For non-anglers—or simply for days off the water—Patagonia Baker Lodge offers a wide variety of outdoor adventures. Options include rafting the Baker River, horseback rides on vast Patagonian ranches, hiking in Patagonia National Park, heli-skiing and heli-biking, cooking classes, hot tubs by the river, boat tours to glaciers and the Marble Caves, scenic flights over the Northern Ice Field, visits to Laguna San Rafael, jet-boat rides on Leones Lake, heli-trekking, and guided sightseeing excursions. (Ask about availability and pricing.)
At Patagonia Baker Lodge, you’ll enjoy world-class fishing, stunning scenery, exceptional cuisine, fine Chilean wines, and warm hospitality.
Yes. Patagonia Baker Lodge is an excellent fit for both experienced and beginner anglers. Each day is tailored to match the individual interests and skill levels of our guests, with fishing techniques and waters chosen to ensure a rewarding experience for everyone.
While we recommend that experienced anglers bring their own gear, the lodge does have a selection of basic equipment available, including waders, rods, boots, reels, lines, and flies. This ensures that guests who prefer not to travel with gear—or who are new to the sport—can still enjoy a full fishing experience.
Patagonia’s weather is famously unpredictable, so packing layers is essential. Conditions can change quickly—hot one moment, cold the next—so we recommend preparing for a wide range of temperatures. Even in warmer months, mornings and evenings can be chilly. A high-quality rain jacket, polarized sunglasses, and wind protection are must-haves.
