The Story

Welcome to an angler’s paradise in Southwest Colorado!

Telluride Angler has guided the San Miguel, Dolores, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison Rivers since 1984 with a special dedication to teaching the art of fly fishing on the myriad waters of our homeland. Since most of our fishing is on small and medium-sized rivers and creeks, we have an exceptional opportunity to teach techniques at all levels of the game, from complete novice to lifelong expert angler. We hope to impart an authentic and lasting instructional experience while pursuing trout on the fly.

Telluride Angler embraces the role of resource stewardship wholeheartedly. We play a leading role in fundraising and volunteerism for Trout Unlimited, Science on the Fly, and other conservation organizations, as well as contributing staffing and funding for local river cleanups, resource-related education in schools, and advocacy for resource protection and angler access at the state and national level. Telluride Angler received the very first “Trout Unlimited Business” award in Western Colorado and promotes “Protect what we love” as our slogan for sustainability.

You could fish for weeks without covering your tracks, and it all shares something compelling and rare: the opportunity to fish in beauty and solitude on rivers, creeks, and lakes that see very little angling pressure. Our trout-to-angler ratio is remarkable.

What is the season for fly fishing in Telluride?

Year-round, varying per river, but always available.

Do you teach beginners?

Absolutely. Our guides and rivers are beginner-friendly! The San Miguel and Dolores are wade fishing rivers, ideal for instruction.

Do you offer float trips?

We float the Lower Gunnison River, approximately 2 hours north of Telluride. This trip is highly recommended for experienced anglers.

Which rods are most useful?

A 9’ 5-weight will cover all of the water in this region, but locals mostly fish 4-weights from July–September on the San Miguel and Dolores. If you own a short 3-weight, make sure to bring it during the summer months for alpine creeks. If you plan to fish the Gunnison, 5- & 6-weights are most suitable.

Can we wet-wade?

Wet wading is popular from late June through mid-August, but watch the weather forecast because a sunny morning can turn into a wet, cool afternoon. Upon request, we’re happy to provide neoprene socks for anglers who prefer not to wear full waders.
