The Story

The Lodge at Forest Grove is a family-owned business based in Superior, Montana. We specialize in delivering high-quality fly fishing and lodging experiences with a focus on quality over quantity. With over a decade of experience, we’re committed to providing our guests with the best possible trip. Our guides are some of the hardest-working and most knowledgeable in the industry. Their friendly, professional approach ensures an enjoyable and memorable experience for everyone in your group.

Ideally located near the banks of the Clark Fork River in western Montana, our lodge gives guests access to over 400 miles of Blue Ribbon trout water. This prime location allows us to put you on fish, regardless of conditions.

Fly fishing is my passion, from early morning sunrises to rowing back upriver for another shot at a great fish—every moment on the water is a gift. I truly believe I have the best job in the world. I founded this business with the hope of spending my days on the water with great people who share the same passion.

Enjoy eight months of exceptional fishing on three of Montana’s most renowned rivers.

1. Clark Fork River

The Clark Fork River features two distinct sections:

  • Upper Clark Fork (East of Missoula): This section meanders through open country and cattle ranches. Its undercut banks, side channels, and drop-offs create prime habitats for thriving populations of brown and rainbow trout.
  • Lower Clark Fork (West of Missoula): Known for its prolific dry fly fishing, this section boasts abundant hatches that keep trout feeding on the surface all summer. Expect to encounter some of the hardest-fighting cutthroat and rainbows in the state.

2. Blackfoot River

Float through forested banks, rugged canyons, and abundant wildlife while enjoying some of the most scenic fishing in the West. A day on the Blackfoot is an unforgettable experience.

3. Bitterroot River

A classic freestone river, the Bitterroot winds around endless bends, framed by the towering peaks of the Bitterroot and Sapphire Mountains. Its diverse river features make it a favorite among anglers.

When is the best time to come?

Each season offers its own unique fishing opportunities. Here’s a quick breakdown of what to expect:

  • March/April: Unpressured fish, with a good number of trophy fish landed during this time. Warm, cloudy days can produce great hatches. This is also the best time of year to land a giant pike on the fly.
  • Late May/Early June: The tail end of our runoff brings big water. It’s a great time to throw streamers and land some of the season’s largest fish. Salmonflies often start to appear at this time.
  • Mid-June/mid-July: The peak of our big bug hatches. This is the most popular time to fish, and these dates tend to book up quickly.
  • Mid-July/August: Terrestrial fishing starts, along with popular small stream and lake fishing. This is the best time for smallmouth bass fishing.
  • September/October: Cooler temperatures bring back prolific mayfly hatches. The cloudy days create great fishing conditions, with large pods of fish looking up. This is also a great time to experience the river without the crowds.
