The Story

Rocky Mountain Outfitters is a four season fly-fishing outfitter providing float and wade fly-fishing trips. RMO is the only outfitter with a fly shop on the Provo River. Blue-ribbon trout fishing is within walking distance of our shop. RMO is located next to the Provo River, which contains over 3,000 fish per mile, with large BWO, PMD, green drake, caddis, and stonefly hatches. We are also located close to many small streams that contain wild trophy brook, rainbow, and brown trout. We cater to all levels of anglers.

Date Range

Rocky Mountain Outfitters is open year-round.

What is Provided to Customer

We provide waders, boots, rods, and flies on all trips. Lunches are included on full-day trips and can be made available for half-day trips.

Region/Terrain Where You Fish

Wasatch Mountain Range in Utah. Elevations from 4,500 to 6,500 feet. The Provo River offers great wade fishing and float trips on the lower section. There are a lot of fishing access points for fishing the Provo River, and the average flow on the middle section is about 500 cubic feet per second (cfs), the lower section is about 400 cfs.

Typical Weather by Season

Spring: Spring in Utah is a great time for blue-winged olive (BWO) mayflies. Overcast skies and rain are not uncommon. These conditions are prime for BWO hatches.
Summer: Summer is a season that produces large pale morning dun (PMD), caddis, and terrestrial hatches. This season is often dry and warm and offers a very comfortable day of fishing.
Fall: Fall can offer the perfect weather for fishing, with crisp mornings and warm afternoons. Fish are aggressive and looking for extra calories before winter. Fishing in the fall might be the some of our guides' favorite time to fish. Consider the fall fleece weather.
Winter: Winter brings colder temperatures, both in the air and water. If you are willing to dress warm and drink hot chocolate, the fishing is still productive.

What Should Customers Bring?

Dress according to the weather and season. Utah is known for crazy, unpredictable weather, but if you are prepared, we can handle any situation. Heavy socks are always recommended. Sunscreen, hats, and lip balm are also recommended, but we have them all at the shop if you forget. Also, never forget your camera!

Sample of Typical Itinerary

The day will start by meeting at our shop located on the Provo. At the shop you will be met by your experienced guide and be outfitted with waders and wading boots. After you are comfortably outfitted, you will depart with your guide to access the river that you will be fishing. If you are fishing for a full day, a lunch will be provided and prepared by a local deli. Our trips consist of no more than 2 clients to a guide. Most trips are done on the Provo River. There are numerous waters to fish in Utah that require a little more driving but are worth checking out. Half-day trips average about 4 hours on the water. Full-day trips are approx 7 hours on the water, and float trips about 5-6 hours.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible guides! I just had a group of 12 out on the Provo with Ryan and the crew. The guides were SO good! We had a 2:1 ratio and that was perfect because most of our group were NEW to fly fishing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fly Fishing the Provo River was Fantastic! I was in Salt Lake City for a meeting and decided to take an extra day to fly fish the Provo River. Saw the reviews for Rocky Mountain Outfitters here on the Orvis site and contacted them about setting up a half day guided trip. Booking was easy. Ryan let me know what we needed and where to be. Met with our guide Andrew at the location and time. He led us to the river. Provided us with all the equipment necessary including waders and rods. Andrew got us set up. Gave us some short instruction and we started fishing. Although the weather was cold and overcast, Andrew put us right on the fish with the right rigs and we caught a bunch. I really appreciated his knowledge on the fish and the river as well as his advice. We had a great time. I highly recommend Andrew and Rocky Mountain Outfitters. I hope to see them again the next time I'm in Salt Lake. Thanks guys.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent day on the Provo I spent 4 hours on the Provo trying nymph fishing with Eric “Hoagie” Hogeland as my guide. I am a Dry Fly fisherman with no experience with nymphs. Consequently I kept “high sticking” to set the hook, but Eric saved me many times. We had many strikes, great fights, and landed a few. Tough landing them 20 inchers! But what a great day. I would use Eric again in a flash. Quite an affable, easy going guy and a most excellent fisherman/guide. All the best, Jack

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Fishing & Extremely Knowledgeable I went on a half day fly fishing guide with Morgan and it was an absolute success. He was extremely knowledgeable a great teacher! I was new to fly fishing and I was catching fish in no time. Per request, he also took time to educate me more in-depth about different aspects of fly fishing - sampling the water for food sources so I know how to match flies in the future, tying knots, rigs, leaders, etc.
