The Story

Enlist the help of Orvis-endorsed fly-fishing guide Scott R. Whitaker at Bucktail Guide Service on your fly-fishing trip to Maine: Welcome and thank you for taking the time to review my services. I am a full-service guide, offering great access to some of the East's most remote but accessible fisheries. To access these great locations, I know the trails, have the drift boat, know the river crossings and I have canoes stashed on remote ponds. So, if you want to wade for legendary brook trout on the Rapid River, drift for monster tailwater rainbows on the Kennebec, or canoe across a flat, mirror-like pond stalking rising salmon at dawn, I am your guide. If you want to learn and receive supportive, low-pressure instruction on the four types of fly fishing or become proficient in an area of your choosing, I am your guide. If you want to experience a journey into the Maine woods to fly fish and receive the highest level of professional guiding service with a dash of humor, I am your Orvis-Endorsed guide. As you already know or will soon find out, fly fishing is one of the best ways to interface with nature and relax while you unplug from your daily routine. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned expert, come experience what western Maine has to offer. I can help you along your journey to unplug, enjoy the beauty that surrounds you, and, in the process, become a better fly fisher.

Wade trips are either 4 or 8 hours in length. Float trips are about 10 to 11 hours. Remote canoe trips are 4 to 8 hours in length. Start and end times are easily adapted to your schedule, prime fishing times, and weather. If you are staying locally, I will pick you up and return you to where you are staying at the end of your trip. Driving time is about an hour to the fishing locations. We break for snacks, lunch, and instruction during the day, wrap up the day in the afternoon, and head back to town. Lunch is included on full-day trips. Orvis rods, reels, and flies are included in each trip. Waders and boots are available to rent. Adventurers should bring layered clothing, a brimmed hat, polarized sunglasses, sunscreen, rain gear, wading staff, water, and a fishing license.

Fly fishing is a relaxing but exciting way to experience the remote beauty of Maine and one of the best regions to access those fisheries are in the “western mountains” of the state. Pristine freshwater rivers and ponds fill the glacier-carved valleys of the land once called the “place of trout” by the Abnaki. Rivers named the Rapid from Louis Dickerson's book "We Took to the Woods," the Kennebago (Land of Sweet Flowing Waters), and the Megalloway (Big Tail) are destination fisheries known across the nation. From the land that gave us legends like Fly Rod Crosby, the Black Ghost, and the Rangeley guide boat, the remote valleys of western Maine continue to offer trophy trout for those who seek them.
