The Story

Come experience the best fly fishing Virginia has to offer! Our fly shop is located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley only minutes away from spring creek brown trout on the famous Mossy Creek. We are also surrounded by wild brook trout in the freestone mountain streams of The George Washington National Forest and Shenandoah National Park. We fish for smallmouth and largemouth bass, musky, and carp on the Shenandoah and James Rivers. Our shop also manages many stretches of private trophy trout water on local spring creeks and rivers. Private and corporate fly fishing lessons and clinics are available at our schools in Harrisonburg or Wintergreen Resort, Virginia.

Date Range

Year Round.

What is Provided to Customer

We supply waders, boots, rods, reels, lines, drinks, lunch(full days), flies, leaders, tippet, and all terminal tackle free of charge.

Region/Terrain Where You Fish

Shenandoah Valley Virginia. We are surrounded by 2,200 miles of wild trout water in the mountains to our east and west. Larger freestone streams and spring creeks are available as well as warm water fisheries for smallmouth and largemouth bass, carp, and musky along the valley floor.

Typical Weather by Season

Spring is our peak trout fishing season. The insects typically start hatching in March and water flow in our trout streams is typically good. Temperatures can range from below freezing to the mid 60's in March and it can be windy. April through June are our most popular months for fishing. The weather is typically mild and the insect activity is in peak. High water from afternoon thunderstorms is the biggest threat to fishing in the springtime. Summer is typically hot and so is the smallmouth bass fishing and the terrestrial fishing on the spring creeks. Expect temperatures to reach the upper 90's or even the low 100's in July through August. Fall brings mild temperatures and cool nights. It is typically dry in the fall and water levels may be low. Winter can be cold but our musky and trout fishing is solid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. When will we start our fishing day?
A. Your guide will be in contact with you a few days before your trip. The guide will suggest the best time to meet to get started based on current fishing conditions and insect hatches.

Q. How much notice do you need for bookings?
A. We typically book up to 3 months in advance for our peak season trout and bass fishing and weekends are sometimes booked 6 months in advance. We recommend booking very early for the best possible dates.

Q. If the weather or water conditions are bad, what is your cancellation policy?
A. Our goal is to ensure a quality experience every time on the water with us. If the weather, water conditions, or even the fishing quality is expected to be marginal or poor, we will discuss options and cancel/reschedule if necessary.

Q. What fishing license is required to fish with your guides?
A. Virginia Freshwater License is required for all fishing. The GW Forest License is required for any fishing in the GW Forest and the trout license is required ONLY in VA State stocked waters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great Virginia angling experience I cannot say enough good things about our day. Nick called me ahead of time and inquired about any special needs or interests, and was waiting and ready when I arrived at the shop at 9 am. He helped me through the convoluted VIrginia non-resident licensing process, and we were on our way promptly. At my request, and although I had all my own equipment, he set up a rod and provided what he thought would be appropriate flies. He answered all of my questions on local fish management, regulations, spring creeks and a lot of non-fish related matters, as well. He was a most congenial host for the entire day. He put me onto fish within 20 minutes of our arrival at the stream, although I had never fished a spring creek before. He was easily as enthusiastic as I was, celebrating my success and downplaying my goof-ups. He coached me while I played the fish and expertly landed each fish. He ensured that each fish was handled minimally and gently, and was returned to the water intact, reviving any fish that appeared unready for release. He took great photos of some of the fish, and forwarded them to me as requested. I found Nick to be very respectful of the fish and the watercourse and constantly checked with me to ensure that my needs were being met. He provided me with a lesson in nymph fishing with a float bubble; a new form of fishing for me. In summary, Nick provided me with one of the best guided trips in my years of angling. He is a true asset to your business and a very accomplished and talented guide. Thank you for arranging this outing. It was the highlight of my trip to Virginia.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Learn and Enjoy the Experience My son-in-law and I attended the 1/2 day beginners fly fishing class and followed that up with a great day of guided trout fishing. To go from knowing nothing, to feeling good about your level of knowledge and performance was a great feeling of accomplishment. We each caught 3 trout and 6 got away. What a thrill. Thanks Bob, Eric and Melissa. You gave us great memories and the desire to learn more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Shop, Great Guides! Mossy Creek Fly Fishing is a top tier outfitter. The store is consistently well stocked with the latest and greatest gear and staffed with knowledgeable anglers. Over the past few years I have taken several trips for trout and smallmouth through Mossy Creek and can say that their guides know the local waters, patterns, and seasons. Even if the weather conditions are challenging or mother nature throws a curveball, these guys have worked hard to help me meet my goals, and have a blast while doing it. By the end of the day, you are sure to have caught some fish, learned a new technique, and had an absolute blast.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Homecoming! I was returning to JMU with about 30 of my fraternity brothers this past October to remember the life of a brother that had died recently. I wanted to do something great while in the Valley In advance of the weekend, I reached out to the boys at Mossy to see if they could hook me up. They took great care of me asking me what I wanted to do. Upon arriving at the shop I quickly realized this is what a flyshop should be. Great gear and great attitude. Even though I live in Arlington, I feel like I have found my home shop. I used to have a great shop down the street from my house but it has long since closed. Glad to have a new home base!! My guide, Tom Sadler was fantastic! I true guide in the purest sense, part coach, part big brother. He put in me the right place with the perfect amount of good coaching to put me on over 18 beautiful fish. We probably broke off on another 10. It was one of the most epic fishing days of my life and I am blessed enough to fish a lot all over the world. Incredible experience, one that I will never forget. I will fish these guys from now on multiple times per year. looking forward getting on Muskies with the guys. These guys have their shop and the whole experience dialed!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Great Morning on Smith Creek Where to start! When I requested this half-day trout trip with the guys at Mossy Creek a while back, I indicated that I really needed time to work on my skills (casting, setting the hook, reeling, etc...) as I had never caught anything bigger than an 8" trout. Mossy Creek guide Frank Polito knocked it out of the park! Frank very quickly identified what skills I needed to adjust, bad habits (excessive false casting) I needed to break, and was very patient in his approach. I learned many new skills, and also learned many basic points about fly fishing that I had not known before. Frank clearly knows his stuff, and put me on many amazing fish throughout the morning. A very exciting and rewarding day for me! Frank also guided my 12 year-old son and a couple friends during a trip last year and did an amazing job with the kids. I don't think there is anyone Frank can't guide successfully. I would fish with Frank as my guide anytime, and hope to soon. Without a doubt, the guys at Mossy Creek Fly Fishing have always been extremely helpful and supportive every time I've been to their neck of the woods. Not only are they excited about sharing their clear passion for the sport, but they are also dedicated to maintaining the simple rewarding aspects of fly fishing that have drawn us all to this wonderful sport.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic First Experience A one day lesson at Mossy Creek followed with a day of fishing one of their private waters with guide Dusty Wissmath and I am hooked on fly fishing. Have been collecting fly fishing equipment for 40 years but never used it. For my 70th birthday my wife bought me the lesson and a day of guided fishing. The only negative is that I now know that I have lost 40 ears in which I could be fishing. From the first fish to the three monsters that were able to escape the landing net, I had the best birthday of my life. Caught and released 8 to 10 rainbows and lost one that my guide said had to be between 24 and 26 inches. Colby and Brian, the owners of Mossy Creek Fly Fishing, take customer service to a new level and, though I was a beginner, I was treated extremely well by them and guide Dusty. With fish like that swimming in their waters I will certainly be back. Whether you are new as I was or an old hand you owe it to yourself to give Mossy Creek a try, you won't be sorry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from "Above and Beyond" Given that consumers are looking more to the internet to make purchases I wanted to share a "truly amazing" in the store experience. I was in the market for a new 4 wt and reel for Brook Trout in the Valley. My family has taken a number of guided trips with Mossy Creek and the experience has always been outstanding. Owner Colby Trow and I spoke on the phone a number of times and we made an appointment for us to meet and review my choices. Note he came in on his day off to personally help me. He selected 3 different rods too sample and explained in detail the slight difference of each in performance and feel. He did the same with the reels that keep me in the desired price range. Once my choice was made on my new rod and reel he selected a number of flies and reviewed knots and set ups to ensure our success. This was a first rate experience and I would recommend that any angler in the market for a new outfit take the time to visit or call Mossy Creek Fly Shop for the best insight and advice in VA. You will not only preform better on the water but will have a better understanding of your equipment's full potential.
