Escape to the Tailwater Lodge in Altmar, New York for an opportunity to fish the fabled waters of the Salmon River. The Salmon River experience is world famous with exceptional salmon and steelhead runs starting in early fall and lasting throughout the spring. Although known for the fall salmon and steelhead fishing, the Salmon River is fishable year round with exceptional summer Smallmouth bass fishing and a chance at Atlantic salmon, Skamania steelhead and resident Brown trout.

Tailwater Lodge guests enjoy the best accommodations and amenities anywhere on the river. After a day on the water head on over to the Tasting Room to try local beer, wine and spirits before experiencing the gourmet comfort food served in the Tailwater Restaurant. After dinner be sure to check out the Woodshed pro shop featuring the best brands in fishing apparel and gear. For fishing waders, boots, fly tackle if not being guided, appropriate layers for season.


Sample of Typical Trip

Trips can range from 1 to 2 nights to as long as a guest would like to stay. Check in at the Lodge is at 3:00 pm and check out is 11:00 but guests on check in and check out days can gain access to Tailwater’s Restricted access area.

Most clients will wake for breakfast an hour and half before sunrise, full breakfast at the lodge. Then depart to meet with guide at either Douglaston Salmon Run for a walk/wade trip or launch a drift boat for a day of floating the river.

After a day on the river guests meet at the bar and restaurant where a full service menu is available serving a range of entrees.

Fall: Chinook and Coho Salmon, Lake Run Brown Trout, Steelhead in the Salmon River

Winter and Spring: Steelhead and Lake Run Brown Trout in the Salmon River

What weight fly rod is recommended?
We recommend fishing a 8-9 wt for Chinook and Coho Salmon
7-8wt for Steelhead and Brown Trout
We also recommend a switch rod when available

Where is fishing recommended?
Tailwater Lodge works closely with Douglaston Salmon Run and believe that their managed fishery is some of the best water on the Salmon River
