Andy Mahurin
Located in the heart of the Upper Cumberland region of Middle Tennessee, Orvis-Endorsed Guide Andy Mahurin has the experience and knowledge to provide you with a best-in-class fly-fishing experience. Only an hour’s drive from Nashville and a two-hour drive from Knoxville, you can experience the beauty of the Caney Fork River and the some of the best fly fishing in Middle Tennessee. This region has exceptional trout fishing all year long with the occasional opportunity for striped bass in the spring. Whether you are new to the sport or an avid angler, Andy offers instruction for all skill levels.
Orvis is pleased to offer our travel customers access to two valuable services: Global Rescue travel membership and IMG Signature Travel Insurance℠.
When you arrive, Andy will have everything you need to enjoy a day of fishing. However, there are a few items we recommend you bring along with you to enhance the experience. Waders and Boots, Rods and Reels will be provided by your guide. We typically use 9-foot 5 & 6 weight rods, depending upon location and conditions. Of course, you are welcome to bring your own gear if you would prefer. On full-day trips, lunch will be provided by your guide.
Year-round Species: We will mainly target brown, rainbow, brook, and cutthroat trout. However, we have a short striped bass season in the spring.
While we target many of the small rivers in Middle Tennessee, we mainly focus on fly fishing for trout on the Caney Fork River. The Caney Fork River is a tailwater of Center Hill Lake, meaning the river levels and flow are determined by water released from the lake at Center Hill Dam. Tailwaters make for great trout habitat because of the cold water generated from the bottom of the lake. The water stays around 55 degrees all year long, and trout love these cool constantly moving waters. Center Hill Dam is a TVA dam operated by the Army Corps of Engineers. The release schedule changes daily, and water levels can change without notice due to weather changes or power requirements. The Caney Fork River is a tributary of the Cumberland River and is part of the Cumberland, Ohio, and Mississippi River basins. The river is named after the dense cane breaks that once grew along the river. 143 miles in total length, the Caney Fork is home to many warm and cold-water fish species. However, the section below the dam is stocked with brown, brook, and rainbow trout.
Weather in Tennessee is unpredictable. However, we rarely experience freezing temperatures.
Whether you are a Tennessee resident or not, you will be required to purchase a general fishing license (either annual or 10-day) and a trout stamp. To learn more about this, you can visit the TWRA website (www.tn.gov/twra/license-sales)
Forms of payment include cash, check, or Venmo.
