The Story

Enlist the services of Orvis-Endorsed guide Captain Natalie Vaz on your fly fishing trip to Alaska. Our trips depart from Gustavus, Alaska and Hoonah, Alaska, each with a population of less than 900. Situated just a 15-minute flight away from Juneau, our location is perfect for those who want to explore more beyond Alaska’s capital city without spending too much time in transit.

Natalie grew up fishing in Alaska and started Natventure Tours in 2015 when she was in high school. She loves to help new anglers catch their first fish and help experienced anglers learn the tricks of the local rivers. She likes to ensure that her guests feel taken care of like friends or family, rather than just as a “customer”.

Most of our trips take place on rivers within the Tongass National Forest, the largest national forest in the nation. We access the rivers by boat or truck, then hike/wade to get to the various fishing spots. Guided access is limited to those with a special-use permit, meaning we rarely see any other anglers. However, while people are rare, bears are plentiful. Chichagof Island has more brown bears per square mile than anywhere else on the planet.

We hope to take you on a “Natventure” here in Alaska. We are certain you will not be disappointed.

  • Pink Salmon, Chum Salmon, Silver Salmon, Cutthroat Trout, Dolly Varden Char, Steelhead
  • Fish remote rivers in the Tongass National Forest
  • I have 20 years of experience fishing these waters
  • Access fishing spots via boat, plane, kayak, vehicle, or foot
  • Rates start at $475/person
  • Fishing season: May–September

Orvis is pleased to offer our travel customers access to two valuable services: Global Rescue travel membership and IMG Signature Travel Insurance℠.

Is fishing with bears safe?

The bears are typically just as busy fishing as we are and do not pay us much attention. Guests will be provided with bear spray and instruction on how to use it, and your guide will carry a firearm.

Can we keep our catch?

We highly encourage catch-and-release, but ultimately, the decision is up to the angler. Some of our tours include the option to cook/eat your catch during the trip.

If the primary goal of your trip is to keep fish to take home, we suggest saltwater fishing instead of river fishing. Alternatively, you could book both saltwater and freshwater trips to get a taste of both worlds!

What if I have a disability?

Accessibility outdoors is very important to us. We want to make sure that everyone who wants to fish can fish. If you think that a physical challenge may make our trips difficult for you, please let us know. We are happy to try and figure out a way to get your line in the water.
