The Story

Located in Peak National Park, the Peak District of Derbyshire boasts some of the most stunning scenery that England has to offer. It is home to several rivers, and the Derwent and Wye sit among the best, with both wild brown and rainbow trout, along with specimen grayling, and superb dry fly and nymph fishing. The rivers are all in close proximity, and moving from one to the other is easy. Bakewell and the surrounding areas are quaint country towns and villages, with local food establishments, pubs, and independent shops, ensuring good local food is available during guided days.

CC Fly Fishing was started in 2022 by Chad Critchley, who has a background in coarse fishing and targetted carp and barbel before transitioning to competition fly fishing and concentrating mainly on rivers. Chad is a qualified fly and coarse angling coach licensed by the angling trust and holds child protection qualification. He is a first responder in emergency care and holds a diploma in education and training.

The days are not just about the fishing, but about the scenery, the wildlife, and the history. CC Fly Fishing aims to ensure every angler not only experiences great fishing, but also experiences everything around them that is not fishing. These are not hard-fished days but enjoyable, relaxed, and memorable days.

The days are not just about the fishing but about experiencing everything around them—the scenery, the wildlife, the river. Each day starts with a walk along the river, learning about the areas and water before casting a line. We then fish until lunch, which is whenever hunger strikes, and then fish again until late afternoon.

Days can be tailored to suit the conditions. If the fish are rising in the evening, we will fish the evening. Locations can change throughout the day, trying different beats and even moving to a different river.

A trip to the local brewery tap room and a list of the brewery can be arranged, as well as either a packed lunch or a visit to a local public house for a proper Derbyshire lunch.

The Derwent is fed by Ladybower Reservoir in Derbyshire, which takes its water from the peat moors, giving the Derwent River a peaty tinge. It is a limestone river that can be rocky in places with some steep banks. When you are in the river, you are away from the public, in your own world. The river is lined with a number of species of trees, giving amazing colours through the summer and autumn months. There is also wild garlic and mint in abundance, which leaves a distinct scent.

The River Wye is a smaller, more intimate river that feeds into the River Derwent. This is also a limestone river but doesn’t hold the colour of the Derwent; it is similar in appearance to a chalk stream.

All equipment, if required, is included in the pricing. The only additional purchase required is a national rod licence, which is £7.10 and can be purchased online.
