Meals & Dining

Throughout the week you'll enjoy a variety of Icelandic favorites and internationally inspired dishes.

Species:

Brown trout and Arctic char.

Typical Weather

Daytime highs range from 50°-70°F in the summer. The weather can change rapidly, so it is important to always bring an extra layer and a raincoat.

Region/Terrain:

Various regions of Iceland.

Gear Recommendations:

Fly rods: The most common are 9 foot, 5- or 6-wt. We always recommend bringing extra rods, 5-, 6-, or 7-wt. You will fish different kinds of water, from the small rivers in the Highlands to big lakes where a 7- or 8-wt. would be helpful.

Fly Lines: Weight forward floating to match your 5- or 6-wt., sinking lines, shooting heads, or full sinking for your heavier rod.

Leaders: 7½ ft., 2X and 9 ft., 3X, 4X diameter. For tippet materials, use 2X, 3X, 4X, and 5X.

Flies: You will likely use a variety of dries, nymphs and streamers throughout the week. You'll receive a detailed list after booking. Flies are available at the Highlands Lodge.

What Else To Bring?

A detailed packing list will be provided upon booking. Some essential items to bring are:

  • Fishing rod and reel
  • Waders and boots
  • Polarized sunglasses
  • Good rain jacket and pants
  • Fleece or other layers to stay warm
  • Travel documents, including a passport valid for at least 3-months after intended departure date
  • Medications
  • Download travel apps to your phone to make traveling abroad easier. These include a currency converter, a translation app, and WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger

Arrival

We strongly encourage you arrive the day before your trip starts. Reykjavik is a great city to explore and has many nice hotels, shops and fabulous restaurants. Arriving a day early will ensure you’re well rested for your first day of fishing.
On the first day of your trip you will be picked up at the airport or at your hotel by your guide and driven 2-3 hours to the Highlands Fishing Lodge.
After settling into the lodge you will have the opportunity to fish sections of the Kaldakvísl or Tungnaá Rivers until dinner time. Following dinner, you can relax at the lodge, or head back out for another fishing session.

Fishing Days

Each day at Highlands Lodge begins with fresh coffee and a hearty Icelandic breakfast served in the cozy dining room. After gearing up, you'll head out with your guide to explore the pristine rivers and lakes of the Highlands.
Spend the morning on the Kaldakvísl or Tungnaá and enjoy a streamside lunch surrounded by lava fields and glacier views, then continue fishing into the late hours of the afternoon.
Back at the lodge, unwind hors d'oeuvres Before dinner featuring local Icelandic flavors. As evening turns to night, you can relax in the lounge, take a short hike to a nearby canyon, or cast a few more lines in the creeks just outside your door.

Departure

After breakfast, you'll be transferred to Keflavík International Airport for your flight home or onward travels. Since most flights to the U.S. depart in the morning, we recommend spending the sixth night in Reykjavík or at a nearby airport hotel, then fly out the following day. If you choose to depart on Day 6, be sure to book the latest flight possible, as the drive from the lodge to the airport takes approximately 3.5 hours.

The Highlands Lodge

Completely renovated in 2018 and just a few minutes from much of the great fishing in the region. The lodge is simple, intimate and comfortable. You will undoubtedly see fish rising each evening in the water surrounding the lodge. Each morning will start with a coffee, tea, and breakfast served in the dining room before you head off for fishing on the local waters. The lodge has an equipment drying room, six double occupancy rooms (each with two twin beds) with a closet and sink, a dining room, a living room, and a shared bathroom with two large showers and three toilets.

Surrounded by an extremely rugged, volcanic landscape, Iceland’s rivers and lakes are home to native Arctic char and brown trout. Below the water’s surface, abundant bug life and baitfish help the char and trout thrive, resulting in impressive fish density and in many places, remarkable size. All rivers and lakes in Iceland have restricted access to help protect the fisheries from over-fishing. Fish Partner has one of, if not the largest, portfolio of leases to access some of the best fishing around the country. If you have dreamed of catching Arctic char in a crystal-clear river, or chasing big, wily brown trout, you will have the opportunity on this trip.

Highlands Region

The rivers in the Highlands region of Iceland are filled with both brown trout and Arctic char. Many stretches of river have long stretches of riffles and pools, punctuated by waterfalls with deep blue canyons that hold trout and char deep below rocky banks.
