The Story

Ourano Pointers was born from a young boy’s passion and dedication to the Pointer. Growing up, he discovered that the most challenging and elusive quarry to test his dogs on was the grand Greywing Francolin—and with it began a lifelong pursuit rooted in adventure, tradition, and the mountains of Southern Africa.

Blending a deep appreciation for Greek heritage, exceptional food, wild landscapes, breathtaking views, and remarkable dogs, Ourano Pointers has created an experience unlike any other on the continent. Pursuing Greywing Francolin in these remote highlands is as demanding as it is rewarding. The birds are entirely wild—elusive, regal, and remarkably resilient. They are not drawn to crops or cultivated land, and only truly exceptional dogs can locate, handle, and present them properly to the gun across these vast, high-altitude mountains.

Set within the highest regions of Southern Africa, the terrain itself is part of the experience. Untouched wilderness, mountain streams, dramatic escarpments, and endless open landscapes create a setting that feels both remote and deeply authentic.

The connection to the land extends well beyond the hunt. Meals are thoughtfully prepared using ingredients sourced directly from the surrounding mountains and region, creating a dining experience that is both local and sustainable. The team at Ourano Pointers is proudly local as well, bringing generations of knowledge and understanding of the mountains, slopes, and conditions that shape each hunt.

At its heart, Ourano Pointers represents a way of life—one built around authenticity, passion, conservation, community, and a commitment to preserving a truly wild sporting experience.

Due to the remote nature of our location, guests generally stay on our historic National Monument and classified Heritage Site. Our base of operation offers seven en suite bedrooms with Oregon pine floors, a large fireplace, and 5-star quality linen and bedding.

The main building, designed in the classic Sir Herbert Baker style, is constructed from large sandstone blocks and serves exclusively as guest accommodations. The lodge’s seven bedrooms are situated on a 7.5-acre property where horses roam and our exceptional dogs are raised and developed from puppies.

Wi-Fi is available throughout the property and in guest rooms for those who need to stay connected, and daily laundry service is provided. A separate dining hall and bar/lounge complete the historic property, serving as the central gathering place for guests throughout their stay.

Breakfast is served in the dining hall before guests make their way into the upper reaches of the mountains in capable, well-maintained vehicles.

The renowned Ourano field lunch is served in the field, somewhere high, remote, and breathtaking.

Hunts continue throughout the day until the daily bag limit of five Greywing Francolin per hunter is reached. From there, guests enjoy sundowners and snacks in a scenic setting before returning to the lodge for drinks by the private fireplace, a shower, and dinner shared in the dining hall.

Fly fishing for wild rainbow and brown trout is also available in the mountain streams and headwaters of the wild trout capital of Africa. For guests seeking an additional challenge, Ourano also offers the Royal MacNab experience.

Shotguns and fly fishing gear are available for hire.

The mountains that we call home and make a living in make up the highest region in Southern Africa. We hunt alongside the wild Lesotho border at approximately 10,000 feet above sea level.

These highlands and untouched mountains form an isolated wilderness that is home to a select group of animal and bird species that not only survive, but thrive, alongside rare flora populations found nowhere else in the country.

The region’s wild trout populations are legendary and have helped establish the area as the wild trout capital of the continent.

This vast, wild, and beautiful afromontane ecosystem is truly unique, occurring nowhere else in Southern Africa.
