The Story

Our Salmon River guides are knowledgeable companions, excellent fishermen, experienced boatmen/women, and well-compensated service professionals. With an excellent crew of guides, all else follows: premier dry-fly fishing, glamorous riverside accommodations, incredible wilderness gourmet meals, and a full-service experience in the middle of the Frank Church Wilderness.

Although just floating the river is an exhilarating and enlightening experience, fisherman, particularly fly fisherman, will find the Middle Fork a heaven on earth! Since 1973, a strict catch-and-release policy has been in effect. The cutthroat trout, which is the predominant species, has thrived and, along with a few native rainbow and Dolly Varden, provides some of the finest dry-fly fishing in the country. The trout average 12 to 15 inches, with the occasional one reaching 18 to 20 inches. The Middle Fork is a great place to learn, or to simply improve one's skills.

Without roads, and with limited trail access, the Middle Fork canyon is best seen, explored, and fished by floating the river itself. The Middle Fork is spectacular beyond imagination. It carves and churns through 106 miles of the most rugged, inaccessible, and primitive country in the United States—a country still relatively untouched by man. There are no roads. It's wild and untamed. Come join us and share the spirit of adventure!

Orvis is pleased to offer our travel customers access to two valuable services: Global Rescue travel membership and IMG Signature Travel Insurance℠.

While you spend your days casting to rising cutthroat, our “Sweep Crew” (the guides who pilot our gear boat, known as the Sweep Boat) is busy setting up camp.

When you arrive at your home for the evening, the tents, dining table, kitchen, shower, bathroom, and fire pan will all be set up. Your cots, mattresses, sleeping bags, pillows, and duffel bag will be waiting patiently by the tents. Beverages will be waiting on ice and hors d’oeuvres just moments away.

Large, supportive chairs will allow you to enjoy your time around the dinner table and camp fire each evening.

Our goal is to do all the hard work so you have as much time as possible to enjoy one of the greatest river canyons in the world.

What is Provided:

We provide quality Orvis fishing gear to each of our guests. This includes rods, reels, leaders, tippet, flies, and anything else you may need. Because nobody likes hidden fees, our trip prices include all fees associated with recreating on public land. The only things not included are travel insurance, flights into the wilderness (typically $155-$195) and gratuities for our spectacular guides (typically 15%-20% of the trip price).

Gear Recommendations:

Although we provide all necessary gear, some of our guests prefer to use their own. We generally fish 9ft 4-5wt rods. A 4wt rod is sufficient for the upper reaches of the river, and can provide additional excitement when fishing the lower portion of the river. However, a 9ft 5wt rod is the most versatile and preferred rod on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River.

What to Bring:

We provide nearly everything you’ll need except a fishing license and your personal effects. A detailed packing list will be included upon reservation.

Fly selection varies depending on the time of year. If you would like to fish your own flies please feel free to contact us for recommendations.

Season:

Late June-early October
Depending on snow pack and runoff, June is normally whitewater rafting time only. July brings warmer water and air temperatures and the beginning of prime dry-fly fishing, which continues through August and September.

Species:

Primarily we are targeting wild cutthroat trout on the surface. The Middle Fork is a freestone river and a wild trout fishery. The native species include cutthroat trout, bull trout, and rainbows. There are also wild steelhead and salmon that return to the Middle Fork to spawn (a 900 mile journey from the ocean), although there is no fishing season for these anadromous species.

Region/Terrain:

The Middle Fork of the Salmon River flows through the heart of the River of No Return Wilderness in central Idaho. The Middle Fork drops over 3000 feet in the 100-mile float. It is one of the most ruggedly beautiful and remote wilderness river corridors in North America.

Typical Weather:

Hot days and cool nights. Water and air temperature vary greatly depending on the time of the year as well as your elevation on the river. The average daytime temperatures range from 70 degrees to the lower 90s F, and nighttime temperature range from 45 to 70 degrees. September brings cooler daytime temps.
