The Story

The experts at Ellensburg Angler realize that a guided fly-fishing trip is about a lot more than just fish in the net; we pride ourselves not just on our ability to catch fish, but also on our ability to teach, talk, and help you enjoy your day on the water to the fullest.

The Yakima River is open year-round with the peak season June through October. Rocky Ford Spring Creek is open year-round with the peak season November through May. Naches River opens the first Saturday in June and closes October 31. The peak season is mid-July through October 31.

  • Yakima River: Rainbow and West Slope cutthroat trout
  • Rocky Ford Spring Creek: Rainbow trout
  • Naches River: Rainbow and West Slope cutthroat trout

Our main focus is the Yakima River, from Roza Dam upstream, targeting wild rainbow and cutthroat trout. We have almost 80 miles of great catch-and-release water to fish, from the high desert of the famous Yakima River Canyon all the way to the tree-lined banks of the Upper Yakima.

We also offer guided trips on the Naches River for native cutthroat trout and Rocky Ford Spring Creek for rainbow trout.

Typical Weather:

Winter weather can be very frigid, but starting in March we will begin to see warmer days, along with better fishing. Spring in the Kittitas Valley is very mild (we receive less than 10 inches of rainfall annually) and by May it is consistently warm and sunny. We will continue to see warm, stable weather through the middle of October. Although we have a very mild climate, the weather can change suddenly, especially in the spring, so we recommend guests come prepared with wet-weather gear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great day on the water with Todd Todd worked hard to put us into fish in spite of a mid day surge of 'chocolate milk" (muddy water) from Wilson Creek. He's a great teacher, easy to be with and shares knowledge of the river, rigging your set up and the wildlife in the Canyon. Hey, Todd, hope you did well on your turkey hunt!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Up to the Challenge My fiancé and I used Ellensburg Angler Guide Service for a trip on the Yakima River on Saturday, November 7, 2020. Our guide was Ross Klein. What an interesting individual! First, Ross has very solid guide skills. He knows how to rig and re-rig. He ties his own flies. He can maneuver a drift boat in challenging conditions. Next, he has been to six (6) continents! His stories are most interesting. You will not be bored. He enjoys sharing his experiences from abroad. On this day, the weather was not cooperative in the "second half" of the day (on top of the fact that it was already cold without the wind chill). The wind was very strong and adversely affected the float and the casting. At times, the wind appeared to push my strike indicator, which was well down stream, upstream past the stern of the drift boat. Plus, several casts resulted in wind knots. Yet, we did land some fish and lost several others. My fiancé, a developing fly fisher, landed a rainbow trout! I landed two rainbow trout, one mountain white fish, and one west slope cutthroat trout. That west slope cutthroat was my first. We both lost several other fish. The fish simply threw the hook. Ross did what we could to steer the drift boat and put us into the best position possible to cast. But, Mother Nature says "no" sometimes. That is no fault of Ross (or any guide). When one makes a reservation for a guided float trip, weeks in advance, there is not any reliable way to know what the weather will be. So, one simply has to take his/her chances. That is just life - it is all about risk. But, Ellensburg Angler and Ross Klein are up to the challenge.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stefan Woodruff delivers! Had a chance to go out with Stefan Woodruff. 10/10 experience. He put us on fish all day long. Cool, calm, and collected, he rowed smooth and was locked in, pointing out where the good water is and maximizing the amount of time we were on the water. Hooked into probably 25 fish, landed 15-18, a couple nice ones. Next time we will get the big one!! Thanks Stefan, -Ted & Craig

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great way to spend an afternoon! This float down the Yakima River was everything I expected. The fishing was fun. The scenery was spectacular. The guide was so patient and a great coach. This was my first fly fishing trip. Keegan made the inaugural trip so fun. I am excited and encouraged to continue fly fishing. My husband is a long time cast angler. I thought learning a new sport with me would give us a fun sport to enjoy in retirement, so I booked a trip for his birthday. Sarah was wonderful helping me set up the trip and plans. I looked at other Orvis schools and trips; however, Ellensburg Angler really resonated with me and my hopes for the experience. The choice turned out to be great. Keegan is very knowledgeable and passionate about the river, environment, and the fly fishing sport. His stories, the history, and calm coaching techniques really enhanced our experience. I also appreciated Keegan’s willingness to help others fishing on the river. If we can’t go out fishing with him again, I sure hope the next guide can live up to the precedent he set!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Fly Fishing Guide Service Excitement was in the air! We drove from out of state to arrive in Ellensburg, Washington for our much anticipated fishing trip. Hopes were high and it looked like the weather was going to cooperate. We had never fished in the state of Washington and were quite excited to fish the Yakima River with our guide from Ellensburg Angler. We were told they were exceptional so they had a lot to live up to! Let me tell you ... we were NOT disappointed! They are GREAT!!! I rarely write a review but after spending several delightful hours on the Yakima River fishing, I just had to! We started out the morning with a perfect day to be on the water. Our guide, Keegan Carlson, was very professional and delightfully personable. Keegan was helpful in giving me effective pointers on technique, which I appreciated. He is skilled and very good at what he does! He knew the waters well and how to fish them. Keegan was a wealth of knowledge on local fishing techniques which he generously shared with us. He is also very conscientious of the environment. While rowing Keegan saw an old road sign at the bottom of a shallow part of the river. He immediately stopped, jumped out and quickly retrieved it to dispose of later. Didn’t take but 2 or 3 minutes. He said all the guides at Ellensburg Angler are very protective of the waters they fish in. I was amazed and grateful! We had a fabulous fishing trip that day! Hands down, without a doubt, Keegan truly is the best guide we have ever had the pleasure of fishing with. I highly recommend Ellensburg Angler and our guide Keegan Carlson for a memorable and enjoyable fishing experience. Keegan, you are the BEST! Susan and Craig

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect day on the water My goal for this lesson was to help make the jump from "doing guided afternoon adventures every couple of years" to "I'm ready to buy some equipment and get out there on my own" and the day was a complete success. Stefan was great, dispensing tips and wisdom. This stretch of the Yakima is beautiful and offers a number of different sites to practice different techniques.
