The Story

Go fly fishing in Patagonia and enjoy Orvis-endorsed accommodations at The Green Baker Lodge, located on the world-famous Río Baker in southern Chilean Patagonia. As a lodge and restaurant that hosts clients from all over the world, we can accommodate multiple groups for fishing, climbing, hiking, horseback riding, marble capels navigation, bird watching and other experiences that showcase all the Andes has to offer. Customers stay in beautiful, rustic cabins that overlook the river and its mother mountains, the Cordón Contreras, which hold back the Northern Ice Field. Known for its depth and strong currents, the Baker provides any angler with the opportunity to catch rainbows and browns in the style they desire. From nymphing the gravel islands in the upper part of the river, to a frenetic caddis hatch in one of its large eddies, to casting large streamers to its deep, structured banks, aggressive trout lurk around every corner.

  • Riverside lunches or gourmet picnics during fishing outings
  • Three-course dinners at the lodge featuring regional flavors with high standard cuisine, paired with selected Chilean wines
  • Traditional Patagonian asado nights, a highlight of every end of the trip.

We happily accommodate dietary restrictions and preference, just let us know in advance and our kitchen team will provide delicious alternatives. All meals, wines, and beverages are included in your program, with a curated selection of different wine strains (cabernet sauvignon, merlot, carmenere, etc) available upon request.

Upon arriving at Balmaceda airport you will be greeted by Green Baker Lodge staff and begin the southern journey along the Caraterra Austral to the lodge. Pisco sours and refreshments will be waiting on the restaurant terrace as you get your first view of the Rio Baker. After introductions are made, it’s off to fish the evening hatch—just a taste of what’s to come in the following days.

Early-morning coffee and a hearty breakfast await you each day as you explore more of the Lago Carrera watershed. Lunch will be provided either in the river or at the lodge restaurant. From protein-rich meals prepared to help you refuel during long summer days to steaming bowls of soup and hot dishes during the cold and rainy fall, our kitchen provides just what anglers need when they set the rod down. After a short siesta, it’s back into the water as the sun goes down on the Cordón Contreras, the mountain range visible from the river.

Happy hour and the dinner service are always served in the Angler’s Quincho, our main dining room accentuated by a large brick fireplace. And don’t forget to ask about our wood-fired hot tubs that overlook the river; they’re truly a great way to relax after a day of fishing. All guests also get to experience a classic Chilean Asado provided on the last day of the trip: a full lamb slow-roasted over an open fire for four to five hours. It’s the perfect environment in which to end the week with a glass of Chilean Carmenere red wine and share stories from the water. We can provide any and all fishing gear from rods and reels, to waders and boots, just in case you leave something at home.

Additional activities are also available for guests, all either on site or within an hour's drive. Half- and full-day activities can include:

  • Visit to Parque Patagonia Nacional (Grounds and Museum)
  • Visit to “La Confluencia,” the meeting point of the Rio Baker and the Rio Nef

The Baker River is unlike any other river in Patagonia — truly a world-class fishery. As the natural outflow of Chile’s largest lake, Lake General Carrera, its turquoise waters create an extraordinary ecosystem that consistently produces large, powerful trout.

At the start of the season (October–November), the river divides into countless islands, forming classic riffle–run–pool structures were trout feed aggressively. Afternoon caddis hatches bring prolific surface action, often with trout rising voraciously.

Throughout the season, anglers will encounter a remarkable diversity of water types and techniques — from dry fly-fishing during hatches, to streamer fishing along cut banks, to nymphing deep runs. The average trout size here is among the largest in Patagonia, with both rainbows and browns commonly reaching trophy proportions.

Toward the end of the season (March-May), the Baker River and its surrounding areas transform, giving way to the brown trout migration, which changes the fishing style. Also, during this stage of the season, trophies can be found, ranging from 30 inches or more.

The Baker is not just another river — it is the big leagues of trout fishing, a destination every serious angler should experience at least once in their lifetime.

Beyond the Baker, our programs also include access to an exceptional variety of nearby waters such as:

  • Cochrane River – spring-creek style fishing with crystal-clear waters and challenging trout.
  • San Martin River – river for trophy rainbow trout at the beginning of the season.
  • Jeinimeni River – pristine waters, trophy trouts at the end of the season.
  • Lake Brown – remote mountain lake framed by spectacular scenery.
  • General Carrera Lake – Chile’s largest lake, offering unique fishing near the famous Marble Caves.

This variety of rivers, lakes, and spring creeks makes Green Baker Lodge one of the most diverse and rewarding fly fishing destinations in Patagonia.
