Protect. Educate. Inspire.2019 Orvis Impact Report. Because passion for the natural ![]() Dear Fellow Adventurer,Passion for the natural world is the core of our business. In 1856, when Charles Orvis founded his fly-fishing equipment company in southern Vermont, he did so with the goal of connecting people with the rivers, streams, and places that they loved. Since 1956, when my grandfather purchased the company, my family has carried forward this commitment to inspire adventure, wonder, and deep connection with the outdoors. Today we aim to inspire such adventure and wonder, not only in anglers, but in all persons, who crave a deeper connection with the outdoors. In 2019, we worked hard to protect wild spaces, champion our canine companions, design innovative and low-environmental-impact products, and increase participation in a sport that we believe fosters much-needed environmental stewardship. As you will see, we have a lot to be proud of this year. We begin 2020 with the knowledge that our country and our world face urgent environmental and social challenges that cannot be ignored. The stakes are high, the challenges are complex, and we look forward to acting quickly, smartly, and fearlessly to affect positive change. Orvis has been family owned, Vermont based, and committed to conservation since 1856. We have a long history of giving back to our communities and the environment. Here are some more recent highlights. More than half the intense enjoyment of fly-fishing is derived from the beautiful surroundings and the satisfaction felt from being in the open air. —Charles F. Orvis, Founder of The Orvis Company ![]() Raised and Donated over $98KThe Everglades and the Florida coastal system are home to hundreds of plant and animal species, including more than 70 threatened and endangered species. But every day, 1.5 billion gallons of polluted water are released into two essential estuaries, putting one of the world’s most remarkable ecosystems on the verge of extinction. Together with our customers and our partners at the Everglades Foundation, we are fighting to protect the future of the Everglades. In 2019, we raised and donated over $98,000 towards this effort and participated in activism and public outreach in Florida. The proposed Pebble Mine threatens not only this natural resource but also 15 square miles of habitat as well as 14,000 jobs in commercial fishing, sport fishing, and tourism. We are working with Trout Unlimited and our customers to fight the construction of the proposed Pebble Mine in an effort to protect this ecosystem and way of life. Over the course of 2019, Orvis ran a series of ads to support participation in public comment, including an op-ed in the Juneau Empire. In April and October, we traveled to Washington, DC, to meet with federal legislators and support our partners in a public hearing. We also raised and donated over $77,300 to support Trout Unlimited in this fight.
