2019 Orvis Impact Report. Because passion for the natural
Dear Fellow Adventurer,
Passion for the natural world is the core of our business.
In 1856, when Charles Orvis founded his fly-fishing equipment company in southern Vermont, he did so with the goal of connecting people with the rivers, streams, and places that they loved. Since 1956, when my grandfather purchased the company, my family has carried forward this commitment to inspire adventure, wonder, and deep connection with the outdoors. Today we aim to inspire such adventure and wonder, not only in anglers, but in all persons, who crave a deeper connection with the outdoors.
In 2019, we worked hard to protect wild spaces, champion our canine companions, design innovative and low-environmental-impact products, and increase participation in a sport that we believe fosters much-needed environmental stewardship. As you will see, we have a lot to be proud of this year.
We begin 2020 with the knowledge that our country and our world face urgent environmental and social challenges that cannot be ignored. The stakes are high, the challenges are complex, and we look forward to acting quickly, smartly, and fearlessly to affect positive change.
The Impact We Made Together in 2019
If we are to benefit from the use of our natural resources, we must be willing to act to preserve them.

Our History of Commitment
For more than 160 years the Orvis mission has been to guide its patrons to lead more fulfilling lives through a deep personal connection to the adventure and wonders of the natural world. Orvis has been family owned, Vermont based, and committed to conservation since 1856. We have a long history of giving back to our communities and the environment. Here are some more recent highlights.
More than half the intense enjoyment of fly-fishing is derived from the beautiful surroundings and the satisfaction felt from being in the open air.

Raised and Donated over $98K
The Everglades and the Florida coastal system are home to hundreds of plant and animal species, including more than 70 threatened and endangered species. But every day, 1.5 billion gallons of polluted water are released into two essential estuaries, putting one of the world’s most remarkable ecosystems on the verge of extinction.
Together with our customers and our partners at the Everglades Foundation, we are fighting to protect the future of the Everglades. In 2019, we raised and donated over $98,000 towards this effort and participated in activism and public outreach in Florida.Learn More
14K Messages Sent on Behalf of Bristol Bay
Every year, tens of millions of sockeye salmon swim up the rivers of Bristol Bay, Alaska. It is home to the world's largest salmon run. The proposed Pebble Mine threatens not only this natural resource but also 15 square miles of habitat as well as 14,000 jobs in commercial fishing, sport fishing, and tourism. We are working with Trout Unlimited and our customers to fight the construction of the proposed Pebble Mine in an effort to protect this ecosystem and way of life.
Over the course of 2019, Orvis ran a series of ads to support participation in public comment, including an op-ed in the Juneau Empire. In April and October, we traveled to Washington, DC, to meet with federal legislators and support our partners in a public hearing. We also raised and donated over $77,300 to support Trout Unlimited in this fight.Learn More
98 Miles of Stream Restored
For the third consecutive year, Orvis teamed up with Trout Unlimited (TU) on their Embrace A Stream Challenge, an online competition encouraging anglers and conservationists to “Give Where You Fish.” In 2019, Orvis donated $25,000 to help fund local TU chapters’ efforts to improve rivers across the country by protecting and preserving their local coldwater fisheries.
4,881 Dogs Rescued
To date, Orvis and our customers have raised over $40,000 and saved an estimated 4,881 dogs through our partnership with the Petfinder Foundation (2019 marks the eighth consecutive year that we have supported the foundation!). All money raised goes towards helping ensure that no adoptable pet is euthanized for lack of a good home.Learn More
10,000 Customers Engaged
Through our beloved Cover Dog Contest, Orvis has raised over $1 million for canine cancer research. In 2019, Orvis and its customers raised $28,000 for Morris Animal Foundation and engaged and educated more than 10,000 customers. The foundation, a global leader in advancing veterinary medicine, supports canine cancer research and improves the health of all dogs.Learn More
Since my teenage years going to Trout Unlimited meetings, I have always been concerned with the environment, especially water quality. At Orvis that philosophy is ingrained in our corporate mission. It’s who we are.

Angling for All
We’ve been the leader in fly fishing since 1856. In 2019 we committed to being leaders in breaking down gender and racial barriers in fly fishing, welcoming people to the sport, and educating and guiding beginners on their lifelong journey on the water.
50/50 On the Water
50/50 On the Water inspires women to get out on the water and discover the joys of fly fishing, celebrates female anglers, and provides women with the resources (and gear) they need to make their own fishing adventures a reality.
In 2019, we launched our second 50/50 On the Water Video, launched the family-friendly 50/50 film tour, increased story telling about female anglers (find some of these stories in Daily Beast, Forbes, Conde Nast Traveler, Outside Magazine, and Garden & Gun), hosted women-specific schools and trips, expanded women’s sizing in our waders, and increased our female participation in our FF101, 201, and 301 programs (22% of all students were women!).Learn More
