A waterproof rain jacket features heavy-duty finishes and liners to seal out water and keep you dry in the heaviest downpour. Water-resistant rain jackets are made of tightly woven fabrics that shed light rain and block out mist.

Breathable rain jackets feature lightweight membranes that allow airflow, and weather-shedding finishes so rain beads up and rolls off. Many also come with smart pockets that keep essentials close and a bit more protected from the weather. Sealed seams and water-resistant zippers help block leaks when the rain gets heavier.

A rain jacket shouldn’t fit too loose or too tight. It should wear easily across the chest and shoulders and give you good coverage through the torso. Consider sizing up.

It depends. Nylon is usually better for rain jackets because it’s tough for its weight and feels comfortable when you’re moving. Many of our men’s rain jackets use nylon blends, and some styles use CORDURA® for extra durability. But polyester can also work well, especially paired with liners and waxed outers, like Barbour jackets.
