The Story

We specifically picked our location on the Kvichak River to build our lodge in 1997. We built this lodge from the ground, up. The location, is at the head of the "braids" on the Kvichak River four miles downstream from its origin at Lake Iliamna. It's perfectly-situated to enjoy unsurpassed fishing opportunities for salmon and Alaska's largest wild rainbow trout. We have the unique advantage of having world-class fishing right outside our front door by boat, as well as many nearby streams that we fly to via our float-equipped aircraft. Our guests will always have great fishing days and will not lose fishing time due to weather that prevents flying.

We adhere to our commitment to excellence. In essence, we are committed to ensuring that close attention is paid to all the little details that make a big difference in your trip. We have professionals (guides, pilots, chefs, hospitality personnel) who are committed to customer service and ensuring you have a safe, high-quality fishing adventure while with us.

We pride ourselves on retaining staff—not an easy task as we are a seasonal operation that runs from June 1-October 7. Yet, in 23 years of operation we are proud to boast that we have not lost one guide who has chosen to leave Alaska Sportsman's Lodge to go work for another operation in Alaska. We have many guides who have been working with us for 8 or more years including one who has been with us for 17 seasons! We operate with a one-guide-per-two-angler program.

We are in a remote, pristine setting with no infrastructure—there are no roads near us. We fish a variety of rivers located near our lodge including many inside Katmai National Park.

Orvis is pleased to offer our travel customers access to two valuable services: Global Rescue travel membership and IMG Signature Travel Insurance℠.

Our guides and pilots do this for their livelihood'this is not a part-time deal for them'this is their career.

The culinary program is world-class. Our professional chefs will create three delicious meals per day for you while here with us.

The location of the lodge is key. We are on the Kvichak River which connects Lake Iliamna (Alaska's largest lake) to Bristol Bay. We have superb fishing right in front of our lodge on the river and we use boats to access the many different fishing spots on the Kvichak. We also have aircraft that will fly you to the numerous nearby rivers to fish for the day.

Our location provides us the unique opportunity to either fish the home water or fly out for the day. The important point is that you have high quality fishing right in front of the lodge should weather prevent you from flying out on a particular day.

Gear Recommendations:

We provide a recommended gear list upon booking a trip to our lodge.

What to Bring:

We provide everything necessary to fish.

Season:

We operate from June 7-October 7 each year.

Species:

We target all five species of Pacific salmon (chinook, sockeye, coho, chum, and pink) as well as rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, Arctic grayling, and Arctic char. We also have excellent bear viewing opportunities.

Region/Terrain:

Alaska Sportsman's Lodge is located on rolling tundra on the banks of the Kvichak River. This area is primarily soft rolling hills with mountain views in the area. We typically fish in mountainous terrain if we are not on the Kvichak. We fish a variety of different river sizes, from ones that you can easily cast across from bank-to-bank, to the Kvichak which is a wide, diverse river that requires a boat. We will walk and wade, drift-fish, float, and use jet boats on a variety of different rivers throughout the region.

Typical Weather:

Weather is hard to predict in Alaska other than to know that it changes quickly. We have long daylight days in June, July, and August. The solar exposure makes a 60-degree day feel like 80! Prepare for wind, rain, and 45 degrees and hope for the best. We do have many glorious days with some fantastic conditions.
