The Bighorn Trout Shop also offers two well-appointed homes located a short distance from the main lodge. These accommodations are ideal for larger groups of six to eight guests.
Upon arrival, guests check in at the fly shop, where staff provide a tour of the facilities and outfit guests with any necessary gear for their trip.
After getting set up with equipment, guests check into their accommodations and relax before dinner is served in the dining room.
On guided fishing days, mornings begin with breakfast in the dining room before guests meet their guides outside the fly shop to prepare for a day on the water. Anglers are provided with a hearty riverside lunch during the day’s fishing.
After a full day on the river, guests return each evening to enjoy a home-cooked meal in the dining room.
The Bighorn River is widely regarded as one of the premier trout fisheries in Montana and the world. Much of the river’s exceptional quality can be attributed to Yellowtail Dam, where water released from the bottom of the reservoir remains cold and consistent year-round—creating ideal trout habitat even during the height of a Montana summer.
This thermal stability, combined with nutrient-rich water, supports an extraordinary abundance of aquatic insects, scuds, and sow bugs that sustain healthy populations of rainbow and brown trout. Fish commonly range from 18 to 22 inches, with larger trout always a genuine possibility.
The river is also remarkably accessible, located less than a mile from the Bighorn Trout Shop and lodge, allowing anglers to maximize their time on the water. Guides utilize drift boats to access productive stretches of the river, while guests enjoy a combination of both float and wade fishing throughout their trip.
The Bighorn fishes well in virtually every season, with prolific hatches of midges, Blue-Winged Olives, Pale Morning Duns, and caddis drawing trout to the surface throughout the year.
Billings Logan International Airport is located approximately 85 miles from the lodge. Most guests rent a vehicle and drive to the property, though shuttle service can be arranged upon request for an additional fee.
