The Story

Orvis Chesapeake Bay Fly School, we’ll help you master the basics OR get you to the next level. Hosted by Fly School USA. We teach the Orvis Progressive Method of Fly Casting Instruction and specialize in working with novice anglers and anglers looking to improve their skills. We’ll help you to learn the latest fly casting techniques and explore fly fishing equipment with focus on both fresh and saltwater fishing. So, if freshwater is more your thing, many of these techniques can also help to improve your abilities to catch freshwater fish. Our schools combine classroom knowledge with hands-on instruction.

You'll cover it all at the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland Fly Fishing School:


  • Fly Casting Techniques – including the double-haul
  • Essential fly fishing knots
  • How to choose your gear and tackle
  • Demonstrations on fishing flies both in salt and freshwater
  • Proper fly selection for both saltwater and freshwater species
  • How to read water and currents
  • How to play, land, and safely release fish
  • School capacity will range from 8 to 12 students with a 4:1 student to instructor ratio

1-Day Fly Fishing School Overview


  • 9:00 AM: Students meet at the Kent Island Resort Garden House Beachfront.
  • 9:15 AM: Introduction and discussion of class program.
  • 9:30 AM: Classroom presentation – Line, rod and reel talk. The Orvis Progressive Method to Fly Casting video.
  • 10:15 AM: Report to casting area for demonstration on the basic casting stroke; students casting.
  • 11:15 AM: Classroom presentation – Fly selection. Tips on how to handle, photograph and release fish.
  • Noon: Lunch (catered to school.)
  • 1:00 PM: Report to casting area for demonstration on shooting line, false casting, and roll casting; students casting.
  • 2:00 PM: Classroom presentation – Knot tying seminar. Discussion on leaders, hands-on knot tying.
  • 2:30 PM: Report to casting area – Demonstration on hook-setting and fish fighting techniques. Students casting.
  • 3:45 PM: Return to classroom for final questions, special offers. and closing statements.
  • 4:00 PM: End of School

The 1-Day Orvis Chesapeake Bay Fly Fishing School is held at the historic Kent Island Resort in Stevensville MD. A short drive from Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland. Kent Island Resort guests can enjoy rooms and suites that benefit from magnificent views of the shores of Chesapeake Bay and 220-acres of our estate, nestling in the rolling Maryland countryside. These vistas are the source of inspiration for our manor’s historic interiors.

Is there an age requirement for this school?

Yes, students must be 12 years of age or older to attend. For students 12 and younger, we recommend our 2-Day Parent-Child Fly Fishing School.


What is the best time of year to attend?

There is no “best time” to learn fly casting.


Do I need to buy a fishing license?

No


What is included in the price of the school?

Cost includes all instruction, lunch, and use of premium Orvis fly rod outfits.


Is lodging included?

No. Lodging arrangements are made separately by the students. See Accommodations tab for recommended lodging, which is available on site.


Are meals included?

Lunch is included in the school tuition price.


How many people will be in the class?

The capacity is 8-12 students. The student to instructor ratio is 4:1.


Do we stop school because of the weather?

Not unless there are dangerous conditions. We ask that students bring rain gear.


Can you bring your own equipment?

Yes, but not required. Orvis will provide premium rods outfits, which include 9ft graphite rods and reels loaded with 5wt, 8wt & 9wt WF floating lines.


What should I wear?

Students should dress according to weather. We recommend wearing Quick-Dry and DriCast tops and bottoms. Please plan to layer during cooler months with long sleeve shirts and a vest. The grounds around the casting areas can become damp, especially in the morning and recommend wearing comfortable water-resistant shoes/boots.


Will I be able to attend the same class as my kid/wife/friend even though I am an intermediate caster and they are an advanced caster?

Yes. In casting, we adjust our instruction to the individual student’s level.


Are there opportunities for guided fishing afterwards?

Cancellation Policy & Fees

If the reservation is cancelled 60+ days from your school date, Orvis will offer a full refund back the original method of payment, or the reservation can be transferred to another available school. If the reservation is cancelled 30-60 days from the date of the school, the customer will have a choice between a refund of 50% or transferring the reservation to another available school. On cancellations 29 days or less there is no refund and no transfer. There will be no refund extended to students who do not attend their scheduled school and do not notify the school within the timeframes listed in this policy. Any reservation that has been transferred to a different date cannot be later cancelled without 100% payment penalty.
