The Story

Enjoy learning to fly fish or improve your technique in our Complete Trout School New Mexico. When people talk about fly fishing the San Juan River the phrase "big trout" is usually not far behind. While you're at the lodge enjoy our warm accommodations, unparalleled hospitality, and wonderful food. Our kitchen staff offers delicious four-course meals to satisfy any appetite.

Fisheads San Juan River Lodge is a perfect location to learn how to fly fish or to improve your skills. Our exceptional instructors can help anyone progress in their fly fishing. Learn how to cast on the banks of the San Juan, and then put your new-found or refined skills to the test floating down one of the best trout rivers in the Southwest. Whether you are a beginner who would like to get into the sport, or a skilled angler looking to progress to the next level, we have the knowledge and expertise to help. You will have a top-of-the-line Orvis Fly rod and reel and a beautiful setting for the ultimate fly-fishing school. Our on-the-water instruction and practice on actual fish can't be duplicated on a city lawn or parking lot.

In this comprehensive school, you will have the opportunity to fish from drift boats or get out and wade for different species of trout, such as brown and rainbow. Learn how to catch trout in many different scenarios. You will learn how to fish with dry flies, nymphs, and streamers and learn how to read the water and select the right fly. The skills and memories you gain here will certainly last a lifetime.

What is Included in the Price?

All-Inclusive: Includes school, meals, lodging, guided fishing, Orvis Helios 10’ fly rod, Mirage reel with line and backing and a fly box with an assortment of flies.

Please note: While lodging is included the cost of the school the Lodge is not an Orvis Endorsed Lodge. Additionally, students that attend the school, will qualify for a free H3F 104-4 Outfit which will be available once the student arrives to the school and provided by Fisheads San Juan River. Non-anglers do not qualify. Outfit changes cannot be made and the outfit cannot be sent in advance of the school.

Do I Need to Purchase a License?

Yes, you can buy them online at the New Mexico Division of Game and Fish website. You will need a 5 day license with both Habitat stamps. The cost is $34.
