Great Lakes steelhead fishing can go from challenging to incredibly rewarding in the time it takes to make a perfect swing or a drag-free drift. Orvis instructors and the expert guides at Tailwater Lodge in Altmar will help you gain the skills to optimize your time on the water.

Join us and learn both single-handed and two-handed techniques to pursue one of the most prized catches in the fly fishing world. Using Orvis' progressive method to teaching fly casting, you will learn the skills needed for pursuing steelhead in any situation. With the great guides and instructors at Tailwater Lodge, and the Salmon River right out your lodge door, you will be on the fast track to becoming a steelhead angler.

At the Tailwater Lodge, you'll enjoy the best accommodations anywhere on the river, while enjoying some of the best fishing during the day. 6:30 PM Dinner followed by an introduction to the class program.
Day Two
8 AM Breakfast.
9 AM Learn how to cast a single and double handed rod, pick up and lay down line, and roll cast.
10 AM Discussion on lines, rods, reels, and basic equipment for steelhead.
10:45 AM Perfecting your cast, videotape students casting.
Noon Lunch.
1 PM Discussion on reading water, choosing flies.
2 PM Video analysis of student casting.
4 PM Step three in the casting progression - shooting & mending line. Students fishing.
5 PM End of first day.
6 PM Dinner.
Day Three
8 AM Breakfast.
9 AM Full day guided trip.
Noon Streamside lunch.
4 PM End of the day, anglers return to lodge..

For the finest food on the river, look no further than The Tailwater Bar and Restaurant, where rustic charm meets metropolitan flair. Thoughtfully prepared seafood dishes and satisfying comfort-food favorites fill our menu, perfect for savoring after a day in the outdoors. Try a hearty sandwich or the catch of the day, and finish with a delectable dessert.

Tailwater serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Also, join us in the Tasting Room to sample one or many of our 24 beers on tap as well as regional wine and spirits.

What Is Provided

Guided anglers are supplied with everything needed for a day on the river. Waders, boots, fly rod, flies. We have you covered. All-inclusive guide, room, and food packages are available. A la carte packages can be arranged as well.


Gear Recommendations

We recommend fishing a 8-9 wt for chinook and coho salmon; 7-8 wt for steelhead and brown trout. We also recommend a switch rod when available. Studded boots. For late fall and winter fishing, proper layering for changing conditions.


What To Bring

Sunglasses, head lamp, wading staff. Bring a swimsuit if you are planning to use the hot tub.
