The Story

Discover world-class fly fishing on British Columbia's Chilko River in a private and exclusive Canadian wilderness setting, with accommodations at Orvis-endorsed Tsylos Park Lodge. Nestled within the Pacific Coast Mountains, 180 aircraft miles north of Vancouver, BC, is a virtual wilderness paradise. This is Tsylos Park Lodge. Those fortunate enough to discover Tsylos are treated to an adventure they won't soon forget.

Tsylos is located on the Chilko River and the north end of Chilko Lake, the highest and largest freshwater lake in North America. Once you arrive, you enter an alternate universe—one with snow-capped peaks, canopies of untouched forests, and glaciers that have sculpted out valleys over millions of years. No logging or industrial development here. Just nature at its purest.

Crystal-blue waters filled with wild, fat trout. No artificial stocking here—the Chilko River and Lake are home to wild, native, rainbow trout, and bull trout, and are the home and spawning grounds of steelhead, Chinook, Sockeye, and Coho salmon. Our rainbows average 18", but 24" is not unheard of!

Whether you're a novice or seasoned angler, you're free to fish the way you like. Wade the bank or float a line from a drift boat, jet sled, or float-tube. The fish are strong and healthy here—and they're fighters! It's not uncommon to see your fish torpedo across the surface of the water, cartwheel, jump repeatedly, and snap you off in an explosion of color and heart-stopping action.

At Tsylos, you can truly unplug, unwind, and let go. There are no cell phones, no Internet, no clutter, or crowds—just face-to-face conversations, infectious laughter, and simple pleasures. This is a rare opportunity to disconnect from the hustle of everyday life and just breathe.

On your Tsylos trip, you'll have the chance to bond with others who share your passion for fly fishing, Tsylos is sought after by people who value quality and have a zest for adventure. Here, old bonds are renewed and new ones are born. Even single travelers feel welcomed and included in our small, intimate group of guests. We're family-owned. Tsylos Park Lodge has been owned and operated by the McLean family for over 60 years. We've earned a solid reputation for delivering exceptional hospitality and distinctive vacation experiences. Our packages are designed by fly fishers for fly fishers. Just pick a package, choose a date, and tell us who you're bringing with you. Then, leave the rest to us. Meals are prepared fresh by our chef and served family style at the lodge. Each day everyone sits down together for a tasty breakfast and dinner. It is always full of great conversations, and lots of laughter. We continued with the tradition of having an open kitchen so everyone can enjoy watching their delicious meals being freshly prepared, with the mouth-watering aromas to entice your appetite.

Breakfast is a blend of the Canadian hot breakfast, bacon & eggs, fresh potatoes, pancakes, as well as an assortment of fresh fruits, cereals, and yogurts. Lunch is spent streamside, on top of a mountain, or wherever your wanderings have taken you.

Rainbow trout and bull trout: Strong, healthy, and wild.

The Chilko River rainbows are 100% wild and native to these waters. They are renowned for their coloration, size, fighting prowess, and their willingness to rise for large, visible dry flies. It's not uncommon to be taken into your backing and to see your fish torpedo across the surface of the water, cartwheel, jump repeatedly, and to snap you off in an explosion of color and heart stopping action.

These stunning rainbows grow to healthy sizes due to the large late summer runs of sockeye, Chinook, and Coho salmon. The spring smolt escapement from the lake and the never-ending summertime insect hatches make for healthy rainbow trout. You are likely to encounter wild 'bows over 20 inches and perhaps that fish of your dreams in the high-twenty inch range.

Bull trout are built for predation and here at Tsylos Park Lodge we target these apex predators both on the Lake and in the Chilko River. They grow to trophy sizes and are often seen hammering shoals of bait fish on the lake and will even chase down hooked rainbows to the boat. They offer exciting sub-surface action and it's not uncommon to see bulls of over 10 lbs.

Crystal Clear Waters of the Chilko River

Imagine your perfect big, western trout stream and you're imagining the Chilko River. The character of the river is punctuated with long, deep pools, riffles, boulder gardens, shelves, structure, white water, and braided channels all of which offer a wide variety of fishing opportunities. The river is crystal clear and it's common to see large trout slowly rising from the river bed to take your fly. The constant flow and temperature of the river maximize insect hatches and the growth of the resident fish. The river flows out of Chilko Lake which acts as a natural filtration system, ensuring consistent water flow and its legendary clarity. The Chilko River then continues north easterly through the Chilcotin plateau and meets the Chilcotin River which, in turn, pours into the mighty Fraser River.

Fly-Line and Leader, Weight-forward dry lines with 9 ft. long 3X or 4X leaders are best for dry fly fishing on the Chilko River. For fishing the creek mouths on Chilko Lake, you will need a fairly fast sinking line with 5 ft. 2X leaders. Be sure and bring 3X tippet. Waders and Float Tubes. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Trip of Lifetime I returned a week ago from Tsylos and its one of the few trips I've taken where the experience surpassed the advertising. This is the real deal if you like beautiful scenery, clear water, scrappy trout and a chance at bull trout. The accommodations are exceptional and the food was phenomenal. The guides are friendly fun and work extremely hard to make this a trip of a lifetime.

The scenery is truly breathtaking, expecially for a Texan. Snow cover peaks, crystal clear water and cool mornings. Karen and her enftire staff go above and beyond to make you feel at home and make sure you are taken care of. You will never leave the dinner table hungry after a great family style dinner. Book early, as mamy guest book before leaving each year. What more can be said about any lodge that has such a high percentage of returning guest. PS - Meeting folks from all over world and the horse riders was a bonus to us on this trip.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A week better than ever I just returned from the first week in July 2015, my fourth trip in five years. The fishing gets better as each year passes. This year our experience was more rises, more catches, bigger, and stronger. Truly catch and release is working on this river. Our guides were better than ever: more experienced, more savvy about flies and location, and just fine all around fishing companions. The weather was not typical, however, Every day was quite warm. An occasional wading the river was a relief and an opportunity to swing some big bugs to great affect. Join me next year in June.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Amazing Week My friend and I just returned from an incredible week at Tsylos in early July. From the moment we arrived until the time we left, Karen McLean and her staff rolled out the red carpet to make our stay an amazing one. The friendliness and warm hospitality of the entire staff made us feel like guests in their home. They truly know how to make each visitor feel welcome and special. The fishing on the Chilko River was amazing, not to mention the scenery. We fished mostly dry flies and each caught an average of 10+ rainbow trout per day, several approaching 24 inches. Our guides (Josh, Pat, and Jack) had a passion for fly-fishing and were very knowledgeable about the prime spots to fish, the current hatch, and the best flies to use. My friend and I were interested in improving our casting techniques and all three guides were great coaches who gave us helpful tips and feedback – we all agreed that our casting had really improved by the end of the week! The scenery on the river was stunning – as we floated along the crystal clear waters of the Chilko, surrounded by majestic pines and beautiful snow-capped mountains, I had to pinch myself to make sure I was really there! As if the great fishing wasn’t enough, we had the added thrill on several occasions of seeing grizzly bears feeding along the river bank as we were en route to our next fishing spot. We were able to watch and photograph them at close distance from the boat until they ran off into the brush – what an amazing sight! The lodge itself was warm and cozy and the perfect gathering place for meals and activities. Breakfast and dinner were served family-style around a long table, where guests and staff shared stories about the day’s adventures. The food was fresh and delicious, prepared with a smile by Lauren, the lodge’s full-time cook. After dinner, we gathered in the lodge on several occasions to play games by the crackling fire with other guests and staff. For those who want to experience some of the other activities available at Tsylos, we found that horseback riding was a great option. The lodge wranglers (Dave and Teresa) were more than willing to tailor the destination and duration of our ride to match our interests. Dave led my friend and I on a half-day ride to the top of a nearby mountain, where we stopped to enjoy lunch and a stunning view of the Chilko River. While it was hard to pull ourselves away from fishing for a day, we thoroughly enjoyed the responsive horses, Dave’s entertaining stories, and the amazing views that we wouldn’t have seen any other way! I can’t say enough about the wonderful experience at Tsylos – I would highly recommend a week here to anyone who is interested in great fly-fishing, stunning mountain scenery, wildlife viewing, and over-the-top hospitality!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Long summer days of delight The flight at 11,000 feet right over the heart of the BC Cascades set the mood for a splendid week - awesome. Then the giggles begin when a large 'bow smashes your dry fly, and about 25 more times that day. The guides are great fishermen. The cooking is way beyond your traditional BC fare, No biting bugs. You'll love the horses around camp. Wish I knew how to send a photo.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tsylos Park Lodge Five stars are inadequate to describe a week at this lodge. Beautiful log housing, great beds and every meal a treat!! I caught and released over 15 fish a day all on dry flies. In the morning a may fly imitation produced a occasional take, but promptly as it warmed we switched to stone fly patterns. Stimulators, salmon flies and especially Chernobyl patterns were most productive. And what fish! More than half my fish were 18 inches and daily a few reached 21 inches. They behave like steelhead with jumps and runs. In order to speed release we used 10 lob tippet material so fish could be rapidly netted and released. Any serious fly fisherman with love this place. An added treat is a trip up the glacier fed Chilko lake with its azure water and large bull trout, and fabulous mountain views.
