The Story

If you are new to saltwater fly fishing, this is the perfect school for you! Orvis has a long history of guiding and coaching fly anglers in Belize. Northern Belize is one of our favorite destinations for flats fishing. The island of Ambergris Caye has an excellent year-round fishery with more than 400 square miles of sight-casting flats with abundant schools of bonefish, incredible schools of permit and tarpon exceeding 150 pounds. Each school is limited to a small group of anglers and will be led by a certified Orvis fly fishing instructor. You'll receive personalized instruction and learn tips and techniques for flats fishing, including how to spot fish, proper presentation of the fly, and the secrets to hooking and landing your first bonefish. In addition to daily casting instruction, each school includes several full days of guided flats fishing with an expert, Belizean guide.

El Pescador Lodge & Villas is the perfect location for our Belize fly fishing school. The lodge is nestled on an immaculate beach with easy access to the flats. The colonial-style lodge has been extensively upgraded and features three swimming pools and a long veranda with private rooms overlooking the beach and barrier reef. Each room is air-conditioned with two double beds, so sharing a room with another angler is easy. Private rooms are also available.

You'll feel the exhilaration as you speed out to the serene flats aboard a Panga (a Mexican-style skiff, with a casting platform on the front, and a v-shape hull). The boats are well stocked with food and cold drinks, so you can enjoy a full day chasing fish and practicing the proper techniques for spotting, hooking and landing bonefish, one of the most elusive species known as "The Ghosts of the Flats". With more than 400 square miles of sight-casting flats, you may also have opportunities to fish for permit and tarpon.

After each full day on the water, return to El Pescador Lodge in the early afternoon for video casting analysis and/or casting instruction on the lodge’s dock. Cap off each day with a Belizean cocktail and hors d'oeuvres at the lodge's outdoor bar followed by an al fresco dinner of local Caribbean specialties prepared by the resort chef.

On the final morning, we'll take you back to San Pedro after breakfast for flights back to Belize City and flights home. You can catch any flight to the U.S. departing Belize City after 9:30 a.m. If you want to extend your trip to Belize, just give us a call. We can arrange extra nights at El Pescador and additional days of fishing, or help you plan a trip to one of our other destinations in Belize.

El Pescador features 14 standard rooms in our main lodge, eight private villas, a restaurant & bar, a gift & fly shop, tour office, a small gym, and three pools on a quiet beachfront location.

Our gracious, mahogany, colonial-style lodge is right on the beach, facing the sea, surrounded by fragrant tropical flowering plants and the whisper of shady palms.

Our villas are two-story, three-bedroom, three-bath homes, designed in a lock-off configuration, which enables you to rent a one, two or three-bedroom villa to perfectly match your individual needs, while ensuring your complete privacy.

We celebrated our 40th anniversary with a total expansion and renovation of our lodge and villas. We are now able to offer our guests larger, modernized and well-appointed accommodations, while still retaining the authentic Belizean colonial feel.

Kayak, canoes, and paddleboards are available for complimentary use.

Massages, manicures, pedicures, and facials are available by appointment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Way to Learn!! Great way to get an intro into the world of saltwater fly fishing, or in my case become a better angler. The Orvis hosts were top notch, extremely knowledgeable, and helped identify some minor issues with my casting. The staff at El Pescador made you feel at home and the hospitality provided was amazing. Kudos to the kitchen staff, the meals were DELICIOUS! You will not go hungry. The rooms were clean, cozy, and the beds provided some of the best night's sleep I've ever had. The fishing was fantastic, double-digit bones everyday and had a shot at achieving the Grand Slam (except couldn't land the tarpon or permit). The guide was energetic, friendly, provided excellent instruction and passionate about his job. Learned a lot!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Experience After years of fresh water fly fishing, this was my wife's and my first salt water fly fishing experience and it was fantastic! We encountered warm, friendly people who provided excellent service and instruction throughout our trip. Orvis and El Pescador run a first class operation!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Trip My father and I just completed a trip to the EL Pescador - The Orvis staff did an amazing job from assisting with the booking and answering questions to (Kyle) the onsite Orvis guide who was awesome. The class was a good nitro to salt water fishing and helped during our fishing. The Lodge staff is amazing and very helpful. The food was great and the overall experience was superb. If you enjoy the outdoors and want to get away for some good fishing I would highly recommend. My father completely forgot to take a tropic weight line and our Orvis guide (Kyle) basically just let him use his personal real while we were there. Cannot say enough of what an all around experience this was.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible learning and fishing experience The Orvis reps (Pete and Kyle) were technically amazing and totally focused on ensuring a great client experience. Can't say enough good things about them. And due to their guidance, I left the trip a significantly better fisher. Learned a lot about salt water fishing and will definitely go again - really great fun (I exclusively trout fish in western rivers). Also my El Pescador guide (Cesar) was wonderful; knowledgeable, patient, and always willing to teach. The top guide, Isa, also was one of the best fly fishers I've ever seen and an excellent teacher. Loved his attitude and customer focus. The lodge staff and lodge were truly outstanding and always striving to improve.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great way to learn This was my first attempt at salt water fly fishing and I learned a lot. Travel was easy, but check your flight connections so you don't spend 8 hours sitting in some airport. Once I landed at Belize City I was met by El Pescador representatives, and in good hands. Peter Kutzer is a great instructor, complete with tablet enabled videos for feed back and the ability of all the best teachers to be patient while giving you their full attention. He and the El Pescado staff were very helpful supplying a variety of rods and lines to use and compare. As advertised, there were sessions on fly selection, knots and lots of casting instruction and practice. One learned different points from the various guides, and we saw a variety of places on and around Ambergris Cay.The accommodations at El Pescador were very nice, meals were gourmet, family style, and the comraderie and commiserations of the whole class added to the fun . Bone fishing is tough, and hard work. Start with a school like this and you will be confident that you can go on to experience and learn more about salt water fly fishing all over the world.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Trip To Remember! Brenda and I had a great experience at El Pescador Lodge during our Orvis Fly Fishing School this past week. Our Villa accommodations were very nice and all staff members treated us like friends and family. We enjoyed socializing with our new Orvis Fly Fishing Friends during the evenings over dinner and drinks telling stories and planning the next day adventure. The hunt for fish in the breathtaking flats was something we will never forget. Fishing with Peter Kutzer made the trip a Solid 10, what a BONUS! Sincerely, Randy & Brenda

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What an experience! I'm a saltwater novice. Always wanted to go but it can be an intimidating venture your first time. To have a "school" by Orvis truly made this possible. Everything is so very well planned out and organized that I can't imagine a better experience for the novice. Peter Kutzer is so perfect for his role as instructor (one of a kind) and you'll find the Lodge staff is second to none!
