To start Euro-nymphing, you’ll need a 9- to 11-foot rod, a reel, fly line, weighted flies or split-shot, and an indicator leader. Our guide to European nymphing gives you detailed information about rod selection, setups, and the basics.
Choose a European nymphing rod in the 9–11’ range built to toss 2- to 4-weight lines. They’re all characterized by thick butt sections and fine, ultra-responsive mid and tip sections. We recommend our Recon® freshwater or saltwater fly rods.
Select a 9–11’ rod built for 2- to 4-weight lines.
No, you don’t necessarily need a special reel for European Nymphing, though many makers manufacture heavier reels to respond better to Euro techniques. You do need a reel that delivers a silky drag.
Typically, you’ll want flies sized between 8 and 22 for Euro nymphing. If you’re not sure what to choose, 12, 14, and 16 are popular standard sizes.
Our European Nymphing Fly Fishing Collection brings together the rods, line, and flies anglers need to fish subsurface and stay in contact with the fly. The patterns here are proven, weighted to get down fast, and tied with just enough flash to draw attention without putting trout off. These are the flies we reach for when fish are feeding deep, and the drift needs to be clean and controlled. Cast after cast, they track naturally and hold depth. You’ll also find Euro-nymphing fly rods that let you feel what’s happening at the end of your line, including options like the Recon® Freshwater Fly Rod or Clearwater® Fly Rod. These rods let you feel the light take, then still have the backbone to control fish in the current. Pair them with Euro-nymphing line that keeps tension tight, along with an indicator tippet that’s easy to see without disrupting the drift. Whether you’re fishing within competitive standards or adapting Euro-inspired methods to your own approach, this gear is built to support a focused, efficient way of fishing.
