The Orvis Flagship Fly-Fishing School Facility

The Orvis Flagship Fly Fishing School FacilityIn 1965 Leigh Perkins determined that there was a need for a fly-fishing school as he believed there were many people who were simply too intimidated by the sport to try it. In 1966, under the direction of the legendary Bill Cairns, Orvis opened its first fly-fishing school, a three-day affair for $75. Since then we’ve educated more than 35,000 people at Orvis schools all over the country.

The Orvis Flagship Fly Fishing School FacilityOur state-of-the-art school facility is located directly across the street from the Flagship Store in Manchester, Vermont where Orvis was founded 153 years ago. Located in the Green Mountains of Southern Vermont, this is not only a magnificent place to visit, but an historic and beautiful place to learn the graceful art of fly fishing. Along with the schoolhouse, there is the Orvis Flagship store and the American Museum of Fly Fishing, all within a few yards of each other. It is truly the heart of American fly fishing. The schoolhouse is a full 6,000 square-foot facility with 4,500 square feet of interior teaching space, and 1,500 square feet of covered porch looking out toward the mountains.

Jim Lepage, Orvis Vice-President of the Rod and Tackle Division, stated, "I am extremely proud of the Orvis Fly-Fishing School House. First, because it reflects Orvis’s commitment to fly fishing and fly fishers. Second, because there is absolutely no place like it dedicated to the teaching of fly fishing. Outside, you can practice casting in the designated casting area, or relax in Adirondack chairs on the boardwalk deck. Inside, you’ll be treated to a fireplace room with a comfortable couch and The Orvis Flagship Fly Fishing School Facilitychairs, and sporting art that includes works from great sporting artists such as Ogden Pleissner. The spacious classroom is appointed with hickory furniture and has a built-in video projector for teaching. The equipment room includes lockers and space to store waders, vests, and rods."

If ever there was a time to come to Vermont and learn this lifetime pursuit, it is now. You will not only learn from the best, but you will be treated to an experience in the most beautiful facility of its kind anywhere in the world, located at the birthplace of the oldest and most famous fly-fishing company in the world.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great School for 1st Time Fly Fishing I just completed the 2-day Fly Fishing school at Orvis. I have wanted to learn for many years and wanted a new hobby for my retirement. The class was excellent. The instructors were fantastic. Forrest, Tom & Kyle were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. They made everyone comfortable and worked with all of us no matter our skill level. The individual videos of our casting techniques was extremely helpful. The afternoon on the Battenkill was another highlight as you got to see the entemology in action along with some hands-on fishing with the help of the instructors. I cannot recommend this school more highly. Well worth the investment if you are thinking of taking up Fly Fishing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Trememndous Experience I just finished the 2 day trout combination school and it was overall an excellent experience. The first day of the school program involves a mixture of classroom instruction and casting lessons at the nearby pond. It is good for both a true beginner as well as someone with prior experience. If you are a beginner, there is a review of the basic knots (and some helpful tips if you are alredy familiar with the knots). You will also go over equipment, leaders, tippet and will certainly learn enough that you can comfortably understand the basic setup. I would imagine it would be a lot to digest for a true newboe to the sport, but it all comes together the second day when you are on the water. The school is particularly helpful if you have some prior experience in that it goes over stream entomolgy, fly selection and how to read the water well . However, it really excels at helping you with your casting stroke. The casting is broken up into 3 separate sessions, and without question, your cast is much improved by the end of the third session. The second day is a full day of guided fishing in local waters. The program is worth the price of admission for this second day alone. The first day of the school is merely a bonus in my opinion. I was fortunate in that the fishing was excellent during my day. We caught brown and brook trout and our guide really worked hard for us. My partner in the class was brand new to fly fishing and she too caught both brown and brook trout, and bought a rod when the day was over. I thought that spoke volumes about the program. The facilities are top notch. They provide you with literature and notes regaridng all of the various topics covered in the school section. They also provide a very tasty lunch, however you really want to get back to fishing so the lunch is not much of an issue regardless. Without question, however, is that the difference maker was the guide we had (Forrest) . I have gone on a few fly guided trips (one of which was also Orvis endorsed) and Forrest is in an entirely separate category. He is not only knowledgeable, but he also wants to help you and wants you to enjoy your time. He is patient with casting and gives excellent advice that you can turn into immediate improvement. When on the actual water, he works to get you on the fish. He is good with beginners and those with experience. I will follow him in the future and take more trips he is involved with because he will definitely improve your fishing just with his knowledge alone. I would strongly recommend this program if you are considering try fly fishing or if you are looking for a way to improve upon your skills and work on fixing your shortcomings. I am glad I took this class.
