Accommodations:
Mangrove Cay is rustic, charming, and perfectly simple, the ideal location for anglers and non-anglers looking for that hidden slice of paradise. Newly built in 2009, the lodge is on the beach and offers various accommodations. All lodge rooms are equally charming and not too far from the beach; simply step outside to enjoy the beautiful view. There are always lodge staff available who can answer questions, help arrange travel, and assist with angling and non-angling activities. All lodge rooms come with the following amenities: en suite bathroom, furnished patio, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi.
Meals:
Located right on the beach, the Reefside Restaurant & Bar serves up delicious and truly authentic Bahamian cuisine. The restaurant chefs draw inspiration from using the freshest seasonal ingredients. Open for breakfast, lunch, afternoon snacks, and dinner, their fresh, home-cooked food is always popular. When fishing, guests can expect a boxed lunch consisting of a sandwich, chips, fruit, cookies, and water.
Alcohol & Beverages:
Aside from water, the lodge does not include any beverages in its accommodation package prices. Charges accumulated from alcohol and soft drinks will be settled upon guest check-out.
Arrival Day:
Arrive at Clarence A. Bain Airport on Andros Island. Since the lodge is close by, guests can arrive on any flight, but we recommend coming in the afternoon or early evening if possible. Once landed, anglers will be taken to the lodge where they will be introduced to the property and their rooms. Guests can choose to spend the rest of the day enjoying lodge activities or relaxing on the wraparound deck that overlooks the water. For anglers eager to fish, there is a home flat directly in front of the lodge that they can easily access on their own. The day will finish with dinner at the restaurant of the lodge.
Fishing Days:
The daily activity starts at 6 AM with coffee and continental items available to the early birds and a delicious homestyle hot breakfast served from 6:30 AM at the Lodge's beachside restaurant, Reef Side Restaurant & Bar.
Anglers are thereafter around 7:15 AM and 7:30 AM taken to the fishing docks at the Middle or South Bights only five minutes away, taking in a scenic view of the town and delivered into the hands of one of the professional guides. The competent and friendly guides will take anglers out on the beautiful flats and seas for an enjoyable 8-hour day to hunt the species they desire. Anglers are sure to marvel at the expansive and beautiful aqua-marine waters. Not to mention the exciting and enjoyable day that will be had.
Around 3:15 – 4:30 PM, the anglers are greeted by a friendly assistant who will take them back to the lodge. Once at the lodge, guests will be welcomed with a cold Kalik, tropical drinks, and sumptuous hors d'oeuvres while relaxing on the wraparound deck. Kayaks, bikes, or a walk along the beach are enjoyable at the end of the day. At around 6:30 pm, there will be a sit-down three-course dinner where guests can share fish stories with fellow anglers.
Departure Day:
You will make your way to Clarence A. Bain Airport in time to catch your flight home. For those wishing to continue their adventure, Orvis Travel has a wide variety of options available in the Bahamas and we will be happy to make a recommendation and handle the arrangements.
*Please note that this itinerary is subject to change.
Swain’s Cay Lodge is located about halfway down the East coast of Mangrove Cay in the center of Andros. The Middle and North Bights separate Mangrove Cay from North Andros and the South Bight separates Mangrove Cay from South Andros. The Bights are a complex network of channels, islands, flats, reef, and deeper cuts. It's an ideal habitat for numerous sea life, a healthy ecosystem, and the perfect environment for big bonefish! This central location makes Mangrove Cay the ideal place to fish due to the versatility of sites easily reached.
A complex tidal system exists where tides can be opposite depending on which side of Andros you are on as the water is pushed and pulled through the network of channels. This allows the fishing guides to be able to search out a rising tide at most times of the day. The lodge boasts professional, customer-service-oriented guides with exceptional flats and boats.
Swain's Cay Lodge is primarily a fly-fishing lodge but also offers other fishing adventures such as spear fishing, deep sea, reef fishing, snorkeling, and diving in the deep blue or blue holes. Spin fishing is also available.

What is the typical weather?
In Andros and the Bahamas, weather is a sub-tropical climate with temperatures averaging in the 70º–80ºF range all year round. Summers can be humid with temperatures up to 90ºF. There is no snowfall and there are on average 340 sunny days per year. It's best to check the local weather forecast just prior to your trip for the most accurate weather conditions.
What gear do you recommend?
Choose either lightweight cotton or synthetic fabrics. Synthetic fabrics and blends dry very quickly and remain comfortable after minimal washing. Cotton has many advocates, but it does take a long time to dry. Due to the exposed nature of the flats, we recommend loose, long-sleeved shirts and long pants for complete protection from the sun. Remember to use plenty of sunscreen if you prefer short sleeves and shorts.
