Crystal Creek Lodge is THE standard of luxury accommodations and remote Alaska. The lodge is made of massive logs and river rock, and is tastefully decorated with Alaskan artifacts.
EVERY guest room has a high-speed private fiber optic internet port, allowing you the freedom associated with remaining connected.
DAY ONE: Trophy Rainbow Trout or salmon fishing on the famous Naknek River
Arrive to Crystal Creek Lodge early morning after a short morning flight from Anchorage. After settling in and orientation—which includes being outfitted with premium Orvis waders, rod and reel—you will head over to the Lodge dock and depart by boat to fish the Naknek River. The Naknek River is one of Alaska’s great wild salmon runs. Over three MILLION Pacific Salmon migrate into the River from nearby Bristol Bay each summer. On their migration, they pass right by the front door of Crystal Creek Lodge. Some of the world’s largest Rainbow Trout also live in the Naknek River.
DAY TWO: Becharof National Wildlife Refuge
Fly south about 60 miles to take a tour around Becharof Lake, the second largest lake in Alaska. Becharof Lake was created by the repeated scorings of massive glaciers over the course of several ice ages. Along the way, stop to visit a pristine river with raging rapids, walk the edge of a dormant volcanic crater, watch bears, caribou and other wildlife, see evidence of 10,000 years of human activity, witness the rugged Alaska Peninsula Mountain Range and fly fish a small stream teeming with Arctic Char and grayling.
DAY THREE: Katmai National Park
Fly east across more lakes carved out by glaciers and through the Alaska Peninsula Mountains, passing remnants of glaciers along the way. Land by either a seaside beach or an inland stream to witness Alaskan Brown Bears forage for salmon. The world-famous Brooks River is very close by and is a possible landing destination. Pass by the steaming vent of a dormant volcano. Tour the incredible Valley of 10,000 Smokes, a gigantic moonscape created by a massive volcanic explosion in 1912. There are numerous streams teeming with rainbow trout, char and grayling are within the Park. You may choose to spend all or part of your day fly fishing pristine waters.
DAY FOUR: Alaska Peninsula National Wildlife Refuge Walrus and Aniakchak National Monument
Fly south across the eastern edge of Becharof NWR and the Alaska Peninsula NWR to land at Cape Senniavan, where you will walk to the edge of a herd of thousands of Pacific Walrus to watch them tossle, roar and bob in the surf. On the way home stop at a beach likely to produce antique Japanese glass fishing floats. Fly onward to Anikchak National Monument, a giant caldera three miles wide, that last exploded in 1933. If favorable conditions exist, land within the caldera or one of several landing strips outside.
DAY FIVE: Departure Day
Have a hearty breakfast, pack and depart to the King Salmon airport to head back to Anchorage around mid-day.
The rainbow trout of Alaska are fish of legend. The Naknek River and streams of the surrounding Katmai National Park region offer the finest rainbow trout fishing in the world. Crystal Creek Lodge is on the Naknek River and our guests can be casting to 25-inch-plus rainbow trout within 10 minutes of leaving our dock by boat.

Pass by one or more abandoned canneries dating back to the late 1800’s. From the air, witness hundreds of white Beluga Whales as they work the tides for salmon. Fly onward across the magnificent coastline of the Togiak National Wildlife Refuge to land at Togiak Village, a native Yup’ik Eskimo settlement. Meet some of the residents of the Village and experience firsthand stories of their life and demonstrations of their ivory carving and other crafts.
**The staff and guides at Crystal Creek Lodge will discuss options with you each evening around dinner time. There are many more options then the above listed and many of the choices will be determined by weather and/or fishing conditions.
Bear viewing:
The nearby Katmai National Park and Preserve is world famous for its population of Brown Bears. Literally thousands live there. It is very common to see bears each day as we fly between the lodge and field destinations.
Beachcombing:
There are many places to go and find great beachcombing. What are we looking for? Shells, driftwood, interesting rocks, bones of giant sea mammals, antique artifacts and detritus from around the Pacific Ocean that washes up on shore. This is pure kids play!
Hiking:
Our roadless region of Alaska is filled with inspiring possibilities for the hiking enthusiast. We have innumerable locations to find breathtaking wilderness hikes, and the floatplane is just the ticket to get you deep into the wilderness for a day hike and back home again in time for a hot shower and delicious dinner.
Rafting and kayaking:
Two options are available for day adventures. One is a kayak day trip floating the from the headwaters of the Naknek River in Katmai National Park downriver to Crystal Creek Lodge. The other is a raft trip on a remote river in Katmai National Park. Both options have fishing available or you can just enjoy the ride.
Walrus viewing:
Three of the only regularly-used terrestrial haul outs for Pacific Walruses in the United States are within flying distance of the Lodge, two of the haul outs are on capes accessible by aircraft and one on an island accessible only by boat. We visit one site 125 miles south of the lodge that has the greatest number of approachable walrus.
