Wear muted hues. Brightly colored fly fishing clothes stand out more than earth tones. Fish can see color, so if your clothing is highly visible, they’ll notice you.
For fly fishing in winter, remember that layers keep you warm. Start with a lightweight, moisture-wicking base layer, and then add a fleece or fleece-lined midlayer for both your legs and body. Wear two pairs of socks: one synthetic sock liner and wool-blend or nylon socks over that. Always practice the two-sock system for winter fishing, and seal in warmth for your extremities with insulated convertible gloves and a snug, insulated hat. Heavy-duty breathable waders and a winter-ready wading jacket that’s water and windproof complete the checklist. Never wear anything cotton, not even cotton undershirts or underwear, and especially not cotton socks. Cotton absorbs moisture quickly and then fails to insulate.
We recommend lightweight, UPF 40+ shirts, shorts, or pants for summer fly fishing. If you’re fishing sandy or gravelly bottoms in warmer waters, try our PRO Approach Shoes instead of wading boots or sandals.
In summer and winter, wear moisture-wicking base layers under your waders. In summer, choose lightweight fishing pants or shorts and a UPF-rated casting shirt or sun hoodie. For winter, select a sturdy base layer and fleece or fleece-lined midlayer to wear under your waders. Knowing what to wear for winter fly fishing prepares you to face critically cold conditions.
This is the fly fishing clothing we rely on to keep us going in any weather, from hot summer days on saltwater flats to frigid mornings by mountain streams. You’ll find everything from shirts and jackets to pants and accessories to get you to the boat or riverbank and back again. Our UPF casting shirts safeguard your skin and stay cool in the heat. The classic button-front moves air even without a breeze, and venting keeps things dry in the humidity. On casual days, our DriCast™ hoodies are cotton-soft against your skin while blocking UV for your arms, shoulders, torso, and neck. Rain in the forecast? Stay protected in wet and windy conditions with a reliable wading jacket. We reach for pieces from the Ultralight Collection and the PRO line of clothing when conditions get tough. If it’s a hot one, guide shorts and lightweight pants keep us comfortable no matter how hard we play. For early starts or breaks in the action, the Tech Chambray Work Shirt covers up against the sun but looks right at home when you swing into town for lunch. And for easy days on or off the water, our caps and graphic tees round out the kit.
