The Story

New Zealand's Stonefly Lodge combines world-class fly fishing with luxury accommodation and fine cuisine. Stonefly Lodge is one of only a few fly-fishing lodges that have been accredited with the "Luxury Lodges of New Zealand" membership.

The Fly Fishing

This region receives more sunlight than any other part of New Zealand and is graced with incredible mountains and crystal clear waters flowing through numerous rivers and streams inhabited by wild trout. This combination of pleasant weather, scenery, and trout fishing opportunities has made this part of New Zealand a favorite with knowledgeable anglers, many of whom visit annually.

On a typical day, skilled anglers have a realistic chance of catching two to three fish, averaging four to seven pounds. Each fish will likely present enough challenge to make it interesting, but this type of fishing requires a bit of patience and persistence on the angler's part. Trout fishing in New Zealand is often a game of finding the fish and this sometimes calls for some hiking. Blind fishing is not common, or productive, in New Zealand, and with fish that average much larger than fish in the US, it is sometimes necessary to cover some water in order to find them. Don't be surprised if you walk ¼ mile between fish, or if once you find a fish, you get only a few casts to try and entice them to take your fly. It is this challenge that most skilled anglers truly enjoy and what makes fly fishing in New Zealand truly unique.

Heli-fishing is popular in New Zealand and allows anglers to reach more remote areas where the larger trout often reside. In New Zealand, unlike the US, larger fish are often found in the headwaters of rivers and streams. The farther upstream you go, usually the bigger the fish get. Since most headwaters are in remote regions with very limited access, a helicopter is usually the best way to reach the larger fish. It is also a wonderful way to see the spectacular scenery of the area. We encourage you to consider at least one day of heli-fishing during your stay at Stonefly Lodge. Heli-fishing is best booked on-site, in consultation with your guide, and the rates vary depending on the destination and size of your party. The helicopter departs from the lodge's private helipad and flights can be arranged on short notice. Many anglers say the flight alone and the spectacular scenery is worth the trip.

Stonefly lodge stocks a full range of waders, boots, rods, and reels for guest use. Your guide will have all the flies required for the fishing days.

All of the fly-fishing guides at Stonefly Lodge are members of the NZ Professional Guides Association and are hand selected for their vast experience of the local waters, ability to stalk and spot trout, and individual personality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Epic New Zealand Fly Fishing and Exquisite Lodge This was my first fishing lodge experience, so I decided to use an "Orvis Endorsed" lodge and book through Orvis. I trust the Orvis brand, so it made sense to use their booking services. I could not have been more pleased with the outcome. The booking experience was very easy. Orvis made everything easy and emailed all the documents we would need, including how to pack, what to bring, and things specifc to New Zealand. Orvis was also very responsive via email (less than 24 hours always)! When we arrived at the Stonefly Lodge, we were greeted by their beautiful and friendly golden retriever, as well as by the lodge proprieters. The husband and wife are absolutely wonderful people. They made us feel at home immediately and took care of all our needs. We got settled into our room and then prepared for dinner on the first night. The lodge has a cocktail time one hour before dinner with appetizers. It is such a fun time to socialize with the other guests and do a little fishing shop-talk. I want to point out that there is much more to do at the Stonefly Lodge than just fly fishing (kayaking, hikes, tours etc.). However, we were there just for the guided fly fishing provided by the lodge. We flyfished for 3 days with our guide, and one of the days, we did a helicopter fishing excursion. Despite the weather being warmer than usual, and the water levels being in drought conditions in some places, we still caught plenty of fish. Our guide was one of the best guides I have ever fished with and had guided trips all over the United States. He spotted fish incredibly well, and was good at giving me direction to improve my casting and presentation to give me the best chance at landing fish. We fished the Motueka River on day 1, the Wairau River on day 2, and a nameless river in Kahurangi National Park (only available by helicopter ride, it takes four days to walk into that area on foot, and there are no roads). The fishing was different and brilliant every day. Both my wife and I were able to land large brown trout on a Cicada dry fly, but we switched throughout the day from dry fly fishing to dry-dropper and indicator fishing rigs. I had the most success with the dry fly, and it is a thrilling experience to see a large brown trout slowly sip a giant dry fly. Our guide was well versed in many fly fishing techniques as well as having some kiwi tricks up his sleeve. It was thrilling to see my wife land a New Zealand brown trout too! At the end of every day, we would return to the lodge, have a drink and get ready for the cocktail hour. The dinner was a five course meal prepared by a 5-star chef, and it was absolutely delicious. Dinner started at 7:30 PM and lasted about 1.5-2 hours each evening with great conversation amongst the guests about our fun-filled days. We usually only stayed up for a half hour or so after dinner before retiring to our room for the evening. Breakfast was served each day at 7:30 AM, and there was an amazing spread of fresh baked pastries, fresh fruit, yogarts, cereals, etc, as well as fresh brewed coffee and made to order eggs, toast, bacon and other things that were available on a day-to-day basis. I don't have any dietary restrictions myself, but there were a few guests who were gluten-free or couldn't have dairy products, and the chef was very accomadating and made their portion of the meal custom-made for their own dietary needs. After breakfast, we would get our waders and wading boots. Then our guide would be there to pick us up around 8:30 AM for a full day of fishing. They had plenty of sizes for waders and boots so it was easy to fit myself. Of note, they had incredible Orvis Helios-3 fly rods too, which was a treat use. A full day of fishing was usually from 9/10 AM to 4:30-5:30 PM unless you wanted to knock off early and return to the lodge. I'm sure you could stay out later if you wanted to, but after a full day on the river, I was really looking forward to a relaxing evening and dinner. Depending on where you were fishing, when you left the lodge at 8:30 AM, it could take minutes or up to an hour before you were on the river. The lodge itself was extremely comfortable with gorgeous views. There was also an incredible New Zealand starry sky after dark! I've never seen so many stars in my life. Finally, one more note: the helicopter fishing excursion. If you have a chance to do it, just do it. Don't over-think it. This was easily one of the most memorable things we did during our entire New Zealand vacation. Not only did the helicopter transport us to an amazing fishing location, but the whole experience is a once in a life time opportunity. Thank you to Orvis, the Stonefly Lodge and our fishing guide for making the fishing portion of our New Zealand vacation an amazing and memorable experience!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Father/Son Fly Fishing Experience My adult son lives in Auckland and I live in Upstate New York. He loves fly fishing while I am a bit of a novice, but enthusiastic. Fishing at Orvis-endorsed Stonefly provided an excellent opportunity to spend quality time together doing something we both love. The Stonefly Lodge is first class in every way: owners John and Kate Kerr are attentive to the needs of all guests; the accommodations and appointments are superb; the quality of the food and drink is beyond par; and the fishing equipment first rate. The fishing was incredible, like something from a movie. Our guide Aaron could spot the brown trout in the Motueka River with the eye of an expert, a bit of a challenge in the late March sun. When caught the fish were full of life and full of fight. A photo op, the trout returned to swim away, then high fives all around. Orvis staff could not have been more helpful in making our plans. My son and I have a lifetime of memories and look forward to our next Orvis adventure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Magnificent Anniversary Trip For our 50th Wedding Anniversary we wanted to celebrate our years together and our shared passion for fly fishing. We wanted to go somewhere warm where we could catch large trout in a beautiful setting, and stay in a place with a bit of luxury. Our Orvis-sponsored trip to Stonefly Lodge in New Zealand exceeding all expectations. The beautiful lodge, built and professionally managed by John and Kate Kerr is 5-Star in every way. The professional chefs consistently provide gourmet meals of locally sourced foods, prepared and presented in artistic fashion. The lovely rooms have beautiful views, wi-fi, and serviced daily. The expert guides and up-to-date gear provided by the lodge are excellent. Most importantly, the Kerrs provide a warm and personalized experience for each guest. Providing an extensive choice of local wines, gourmet foods, arranging for heli-fishing, and other local tours, and ground transfers, made this the perfect "trip of a lifetime" for us. Thanks ORVIS and John and Kate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the Best My son and I chose Stonefly Lodge for our New Zealand fly fishing trip in April of 2015. Simply put - this place is magnificent. Five star in every category. The owners/hosts, John and Kate Kerr are true professionals in the field of hospitality. The impressive lodge, situated above the bank of the Motueka River, is thoughtfully appointed and extremely comfortable. Beautiful rooms and views. The food prepared by Chef Dean was truly impressive every single day. As for the fishing - utterly superb!! These fish are big. So many world class brown trout fishing options each day. Our guide, Richard, was perhaps the best gentleman I have ever fished with. This place is among New Zealand's finest. Highly recommended

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Our Favorite Fishing Lodge We first came to Stonefly on our honeymoon in 2010. Our most recent visit, November 2014, was our third visit. We love this place and cannot imagine going anywhere else. Everything about the lodge is first-class: our hosts, John and Kate, food, accommodations, fishing guides, helicopter pilots, etc. The fishing is outstanding, with highly experienced guides. The lodge is beautiful and comfortable and we feel like we are visiting old friends each time we visit. Enjoying a great local wine or beer after a day of fishing is a perfect way to celebrate the beautiful scenery and great fishing to be had each day. John and Kate take such good care of each guest and of their beautiful property. The farm and garden are impressive. The fresh food is amazing! We just got home, but we are already excitedly anticipating our next visit!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A gem in New Zealand I recommend this lodge to anyone. I visited it for the first time in November 2014 on the advice of my brother in law, a Wyoming-based fly-fishing guide. It is now my favorite of several lodges I've stayed at over several trips to New Zealand, both north and south island. I am an avid (but not exceptional) fly fisher-woman and love New Zealand. A college roommate and I decided to treat ourselves to a fishing trip. We could not have been more pleased with Stonefly Lodge. The fishing was exceptional, our guide was wonderful, and the Stonefly hosts were outstanding. The food was gourmet and the lodge hosts and atmosphere very welcoming. In five days of fishing we didn't catch a trout under five pounds and both of us caught several over seven pounds. At our request our hosts arranged for a masseuse for our weary 40-something bodies after the days of fishing, and she was wonderful. We added a final non-fishing day to our trip to enjoy Abel Tasman park. The lodge hosts arranged our tour for us and it was fantastic. I am already planning a return trip to Stonefly Lodge with my husband. Enjoy! Connie H. Austin, Texas

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Lodge My husband and I have stayed at Stonefly Lodge many, many times. We are heading back for another stay in January. The lodge was built from the ground up by John and Kate. They should feel very proud of their efforts. The rooms are extremely comfortable and fitted out well. The food is outstanding - prepared by Chef Dean. The wine list has been carefully selected from New Zealand wines, which are excellent. My husband and I have been fly fishing to many different parts of the world. The (big) brown trout in this area are amazing to see (and catch and release). We have experienced amazing fishing from Stonefly Lodge over the years. Having the helipad right there is a big plus. The guides are from the area and know the rivers well. For those of us who are animal lovers, there are alpacas on a section of the property. Can't wait until out next visit!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding I have stayed at many lodges around the world and Stonefly Lodge's combination of elegance, comfort, dining and fantastic fishing is the best I have ever experienced. The private heli pad as well as superior guides provides for the Brown trout fishing experience of a lifetime. You fly to remote areas, never seeing another fishing person, to sight fish for huge Browns as well as Rainbows. John and Kate go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and welcome. The view from the balcony is breathtaking. My wife and I highly recommend Stonefly Lodge to anyone traveling to New Zealand. We have already re- booked for 2015. Jim and Ann
