TRIP START: Cinco Rios Lodge
LENGTH OF STAY: 4 nights/3 days
This lodge sits atop a hill overlooking the stunning Andes Mountains, with the Simpson River in the foreground. Located just ten miles from the town of Coyhaique, this is the heart of Chilean Patagonia. The lodge has six large rooms, each with two king-sized beds and a magnificent view of the Andes. Fine linen sheets, top-quality duvets, and handcrafted furniture all add to the ambiance. All rooms are equipped with luggage storage, heated towel rails, bathrobes, and closet space. A large deck with comfortable outdoor couches and a wood fire hot tub are also available to guests. Due to the lodge’s location, you will rarely travel more than an hour to fish each day and return to the lodge for a world-class dinner each evening. Just 45 minutes from the airport in Balmaceda, Cinco Rios Lodge is as easy to get to as any fishing lodge in Patagonia.
TRIP END: Estancia del Zorro
LENGTH OF STAY: 3 nights/3 days
This lodge is on a 15,000-acre estancia (ranch) in the Coyhaique Alto mountains on the Chile-Argentina boarder. The working ranch is home to the Zorro (red fox) Spring Creek which runs 15 miles through the property. Just a few hundred yards from your room you can cast dry flies to brown trout in this amazing river. From Estancia del Zorro you can fish over 100km of private water within an hour of the lodge in both Chile and Argentina. The lodge has six large rooms, each with two king-sized beds and a wonderful view of the Estancia and Zorro Spring Creek. Attached to the main building is the dining room, where both breakfasts and dinners will be served, as well as lunch while fishing on the Estancia. Adjacent to the main building is the ‘quincho,’ an enclosed area with a center fireplace for cooking BBQ over a woodfire. While the lodge’s location and size provide the feeling of remoteness, the city of Coyhaique is just 40-minutes away. The lodge is easily accessible with daily flights from Santiago to Balmaceda.
Sample Itinerary: Cinco Rios Lodge
Each morning you’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast in the lodge’s dining room. Following breakfast, you’ll meet up with your guide to head out for a full day of fishing. Your guide will carry lunch, so you can enjoy it on the boat or streamside to get the most out of your fishing day. Following fishing, you’ll return to the Lodge to freshen up and enjoy appetizers and drinks with the rest of the group. Dinner will be served each evening in the dining room. On the third day of the trip, you should have your bags packed so they can be taken to Estancia del Zorro while you’re out for the day. Following the third day of fishing you will be taken to Estancia del Zorro rather than back to Cinco Rios Lodge.
Sample Itinerary: Estancia del Zorro
Each morning you’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast in the lodge’s dining room. Following breakfast, you’ll meet up with your guide to head out for a full day of fishing. If you are fishing nearby on the Zorro Spring Creek, you will have the option to return to the dining room for lunch or pack your lunch to enjoy streamside. If you’re heading to a river or lake off the Estancia your guide will carry lunch, so you can enjoy it on the boat or streamside to get the most out of your fishing day. Following fishing you’ll return to the Estancia to freshen up and enjoy appetizers and drinks with the rest of the group. Dinner will be served in the main dining room or the adjacent quincho.
Cinco Rios Lodge:
The fishing at Cinco Rios Lodge is primarily for brown trout, with some rainbows mixed in depending on the fishery. Whether you love to wade or float freestone rivers, walk the banks of a spring creek, or fish lakes for the trout of a lifetime, Cinco Rios has what you’re looking for. The diversity of the fisheries in this part of Patagonia is remarkable. The peak of dry-fly fishing is in January and February due to the abundant terrestrial life in the region on both the rivers and lakes. You can almost always entice a fish to rise to your fly. Streamer fishing is also productive, especially in the lakes and larger rivers, and can help bring that fish of a lifetime to the net. The lodge’s central location in the region means you’ll rarely drive more than 45 minutes to fish any of the rivers, lakes, or spring creeks.
Estancia del Zorro:
The Fishing at Estancia del Zorro is primarily focused on the Zorro spring creek and other spring creeks across the Argentina boarder. The Zorro holds only brown trout, averaging about 20”, with larger fish caught regularly. You’ll also have opportunities to fish larger rivers like the Ñirehuao River and various ponds and lakes that all hold large brown trout. Target Species: brown and rainbow trout

What is the typical weather?
Weather during January and February water levels stabilize. This period is characterized by often great dry fly fishing, obviously dependent upon the weather of the season. The weather can range from hot and dry in the daytime to cool mornings and nights. High winds are possible anytime. The months of January and February correspond with July and August in Western U.S. Temperatures 50℉ - 80℉. It's best to check the local weather forecast just prior to your trip for the most accurate weather conditions.
What gear is recommended?
When traveling to The Patagonia region of Chile and deciding on your clothing it is always wise to expect varied weather for your trip. That variation can be from a warm beautiful summer day to a cold spring or mid-autumn day in a matter of minutes. Rainfall is always a possibility as is a rainless, dry week. Just keep in mind layering is important so pack based on layers rather than extremes. You will likely want to add or take a layer off during the same day of fishing. It all sounds a little daunting, but it really is not that bad. It’s more about the old adage’ better to have and not need than to need and not have’ as they say. Guides will provide flies as part of the trip package. Guests will need to bring waders, boots, rods and other personal items listed in our suggested packing list.
