What is Provided:
All camp trips guests are provided with all necessary fishing equipment, tackle, on the river accommodations, meals, and non-alcoholic beverages. You are only responsible for personal clothing, an Oregon fishing license, and any alcoholic beverages.
Day trip guests will be provided with all necessary fishing gear, tackle, snacks, lunch, and non-alcoholic beverages. You are only responsible for your Oregon fishing license.
Gear Recommendations:
On trout trips, we recommend 9' or 10' rods that are either a 5-wt. or 6-wt. for most fishing tactics. When fishing streamers, we will use 7wt. rods.
On steelhead trips, we recommend 7-wt. and 8-wt. single hand rods. For Spey rods, we like both 6- and 7-wt. switch rods with Skagit shooting head, and 6-wt. and 7-wt. 12'6" or 13' rods with both Skagit and Scandi shooting heads.
What to Bring:
For all trips we encourage guests to bring a good raincoat, polarized sunglasses, a sun hat, camera, their own reusable water bottle, and sunscreen.
Season:
Early Summer: June-July. As the river begins to drop and clear from spring runoff, the trout fishing heats up as large hatches of caddis, mayflies, and stoneflies begin their yearly cycle. By mid-June, we start to see prolific numbers of golden stoneflies, creating explosive dry-fly fishing for the large wild rainbow trout. With warmer weather, blooming foliage, and exciting fishing, this is an incredible time to be on either the Wallowa or Grande Ronde.
Fall: September-November. The fall season begins with spectacular rainbow trout fishing in early September into October when steelhead begin to arrive. Many of these trips create a unique fly-fishing experience as you target both trout and steelhead throughout the day. October through November offers the prime season at catching a Grande Ronde River steelhead, as we begin to Spey cast and swing wet and dry flies on some of the best runs the Grande Ronde has to offer.
Winter: December-March. The Grande Ronde and Wallowa rivers can both have good fishing opportunities in the winter depending on weather and water conditions. With a steelhead season that goes well into March finding, a good weather window to utilize can give anglers the opportunity at catching these incredible fish throughout the winter. The same can be said for the rainbow trout fishing, it is not uncommon to get into trophy rainbows throughout the winter months as well.
Species:
While the Grande Ronde and Wallowa rivers are known for the healthy runs of summer steelhead, they also provide world-class, wild rainbow trout fishing, with many fish being talked about in pounds, not inches. .
Region/Terrain:
The Grande Ronde and Wallowa River lay in the remote NE corner of Oregon. Surrounded by stunning 9,000 ft. peaks, and beautiful evergreen forests, these rugged river canyons create one of the most beautiful fly-fishing destinations.
Typical Weather:
In the rugged terrain of NE Oregon, we get every bit of all four seasons. However, generally by mid-April, we begin to see nice spring days into the ’70s, getting up into the ’80s and ’90s throughout summer. In September, we are often greeted by great fall weather, warm during the day and cooling off by night. As we enter October and into November, we start to see the first freeze of the year with temperatures ranging from freezing into the ’50s.
