The key to having that memorable fishing holiday often lies in the catch and all the other components that come together to create a fun, exciting, and friendly experience. Located just 50 miles south of Trondheim's Værnes airport, the main lodge at the Norwegian Fly fishers Club sits on the south bank of the Gaula River. Guests at the lodge sometimes see salmon swimming in the slow water of the Rogstadmoen, or Lodge, Pool. On-site there are various accommodation options, including single, double and suite rooms in the NFC Lodge, and self-catered country house options. All rooms have private baths. There is a wellness center with a sauna and massage room, as well as a lounge and conference room in the new addition. Welcome meetings will take place at the lodge at Rogstadmoen and will include an informal welcome dinner. The history and flavor of the old NFC remains in the dining room, and around the stone fireplace, where many guests gather in the evening. There you will find a bar, and a fly shop stocked with fishing gear and clothing.
Meals:
Dining at the Norwegian Flyfishing Club is a blend of contemporary cuisine and local and regional dishes that let guests experience some of the local Norwegian culture. Moose or reindeer might appear as hors d’oeuvres. Pasta, steak, and chicken dishes served with fresh vegetables and salads and topped with delicious desserts will give you the strength for another day of fishing! If the weather is good, we frequently serve dinner outside along the river. Lunches are often packed and served on the river during the day.
Alcohol:
Beer and wine are included with dinner. If you prefer not to drink alcohol just let the club know and they will have plenty of delicious alternatives for you.
Guests will arrive at the lodge around 3:00–4:00 PM. This gives them plenty of time to move into their accommodations and get comfortable. Later in the evening guests will meet for a welcome dinner and a briefing with the guides who will go over the rotation plan, techniques, and tactics for the week.
Each day, according to the beat rotation-fishing schedule, guests will depart with their guide to fish the water assigned to them. There is a mix of upper, middle, and lower river beats to ensure that each angler has equal time on the best pools, and in the best part of the river according to current conditions. In addition, there are several free-for-all beats open to anyone to fish at any time during their stay.
The E beats are the furthest downriver of the NFC beats, and as such, are often the first to see fish early in the season. In addition, they are located below the Gaulfossen, a barrier to the salmon early in the season. Not a true waterfall, this gorge at high water speeds makes an effective barrier for the salmon, and they wait until the current speed decreases enough for easy migration. As water levels become normal, fish ascend into the upper river.
Guests will enjoy a packed lunch and eat on the river. After returning to the lodge in the early evening, guests can enjoy a cocktail and some hors d’oeuvres. Dinner is usually served around 6:30 PM. After dinner, you can relax, or go back out to fish some more. A vehicle is essential as the fishing is done by a rotation principle where pools and beats are spread over a big part of the river.
The Gaula is a wild, undammed river that has never been built out for hydroelectric power. As such, its water level continuously fluctuates which provides seasoned anglers with a varied and exciting fishing challenge.
The season runs from June 1 to August 31 each year, providing 3 months of fly fishing. The river is open to fishing 24 hours a day, and each fishing day at the lodge is divided into four six-hour sessions, during each of which two anglers are assigned to a beat. Because of the long days, your guide may suggest fishing early or late in the day to maximize your chance of success. NFC guides are extremely knowledgeable about the river and will guide you for at least 8 hours each day. They all speak excellent English.
The lodge has access to over 25 pools each season, providing ample water for guests. At the same time, NFC constantly evaluates its water selection and adds new beats or eliminates old ones to improve the fishing. NFC is a strong supporter of catch-and-release fishing, and unlike many other salmon lodges, encourages the release of all healthy fish.
The NFC beats on the Gaula are completely fly fishing only. On some pools, we only lease one bank, and you may see anglers on the opposite shore using different tackle.

Trondheim offers many cultural and tourist attractions, as well as good shopping opportunities. There are also good bathing beaches situated at the head of the Trondheim fjord, or at the monk's island 'Munkholmen'. The cultural heritage site and mining town of R'ros is always worth a visit. Hiking and mountain sightseeing is also possible close to the Gaula. The local tourist office in Storen is always ready to help. We recommend that any non-angling guest book an extra rental car, to be independent of their angling companion.
What is the typical weather?
The weather during the short Norwegian summer can be very unpredictable: Cool evenings, warm days with rain and even some snow on occasion (early June and late August)! Daytime temperatures will usually fluctuate around 10º to 20º C (50º to 70º F), but guests should be prepared for cold rain and wind. In late June, July, and August we often experience quite warm days over 25º (75º F) under good weather conditions. It's best to check the local weather forecast just prior to your trip for the most accurate weather conditions.
