The Story

Rocky Mountain Outfitters is THE original Orvis Endorsed guide service on the famous Provo River. We have been guiding the Provo for over 25 years. We know what works and we know and employ the best and most hard-working guides. With our guides you will have a world class experience and will make a lifelong friend. Rocky Mountain Outfitters is a four-season guide service located close to Park City, Deer Valley and Salt Lake City. We specialize in walk and wade trips fishing the famous Lower Provo, Middle Provo and the Weber River. We are one of two outfitters that has access to the very best section of the Lower Provo, where the most, big fish are.

The Provo River is famous for its large numbers of brown and rainbow trout. Some sections boast over 4,000 fish per mile. Our guides are comfortable with anglers of any skill level. We love to fish with families as well as corporate groups. The Provo is a very forgiving river for beginners but has enough variety to keep the most avid angler interested. We love what we do, and we would love to share it with you. We would love to talk to you to get to know you and your needs better. Give us a call.

We pride ourselves on only sending trips out with a 2 to 1 guest to guide ratio. Full and halfday trips are available. We provide all or the gear you will need including Orvis boots and waders, as well as rods and reels and all terminal tackle at no additional cost.

Orvis is pleased to offer our travel customers access to two valuable services: Global Rescue travel membership and IMG Signature Travel Insurance℠.

What Should Customers Bring?

You will need a Utah fishing license and also dress according to the weather and season. Utah is known for crazy, unpredictable weather, but if you are prepared, we can handle any situation.
SUMMER: socks and something comfortable to wear under the waders, shorts are ok. You will also need sun protection hat, sunglasses, etc.
WINTER: socks and an insulated base layer, the waders are not insulated. Layers on top to meet conditions. Hat and sunglasses are good as well

Date Range:

Rocky Mountain Outfitters is open year-round.

Species You Fish for by Season:

Rainbow trout, brown trout, brook trout, and cutthroat.

Region/Terrain Where You Fish:

Wasatch Mountain Range in Utah. Elevations from 4,500 to 6,500 feet. The Provo River offers great wade fishing and float trips on the lower section. There are a lot of fishing access points for fishing the Provo River, and the average flow on the middle section is about 500 cubic feet per second (cfs), the lower section is about 400 cfs.

Typical Weather by Season:

Spring: Spring in Utah is a great time for blue-winged olive (BWO) mayflies. Overcast skies and rain are not uncommon. These conditions are prime for BWO hatches.

Summer: Summer is a season that produces large pale morning dun (PMD), caddis, and terrestrial hatches. This season is often dry and warm and offers a very comfortable day of fishing.

Fall: Fall can offer the perfect weather for fishing, with crisp mornings and warm afternoons. Fish are aggressive and looking for extra calories before winter. Fishing in the fall might be the some of our guides' favorite time to fish. Consider the fall fleece weather.

Winter: Winter brings colder temperatures, both in the air and water. If you are willing to dress warm and drink hot chocolate, the fishing is still productive.

What insects are in the fishery?

Blue-winged olives, pale morning duns, midges, caddisflies, green drakes, and stoneflies.

How far is the drive?

Up to 20 minutes.
