The Orvis Wingshooting Schools were the first of their kind offered in the United States, and for more than twenty-five years have offered shooters the finest wingshooting and hunting instruction available anywhere in the world.

Based on the English Churchill method, our instinctive approach to shotgunning offers both the novice and the seasoned veteran a complete shooting system that can be used for upland and waterfowl hunting as well as sporting clays. The Orvis shooting instructors are consummate professionals who are beside you at every shot, quietly analyzing and improving your style.

In addition to firing hundreds of rounds of ammunition, each student participates in classroom instruction on basic shotgun safety, shotshell selection, and shotgun patterning. Students are grouped together according to their level of skill and experience, and are treated to a uniquely designed, fully automated instruction area that provides a full array of clay target angles.

The tuition includes comprehensive shooting instruction, all targets and ammunition, lunches each school day, and a copy of the Orvis Wingshooting Handbook. The use of an Orvis shotgun is available at no additional charge if desired. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Experience We signed up for the one day shooting school and lucked out with Chuck Baker as our instructor - he was amazing! My husband and I both thoroughly enjoyed the experience and learned a lot about proper technique. I went from hitting maybe 1/5 targets in the morning to almost all of them by the end of the day. This was a perfect social distancing activity to enjoy during the pandemic & felt safe the whole time. Highly recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Outing I recently attended the 2 day Orvis Wingshooting School at Pursell Farms on July 13 - 14 2019. First off I would like to take this time to to tip my hat to Chuck Baker for making this an outstanding shooting experience. I have been shooting for over 50+ yrs. and considered myself a fairly good shooter, but after spending the weekend with Chuck that all changed. Chuck has taught me a new way to view and take shot that has given me much more consistency and confidence. Chuck is a fantastic teacher/instructor with a lot of patience. Chuck also made this weekend so much more by his wealth of historic knowledge of the surrounding area and especially the rich history of Pursell Farms . I really enjoyed getting to know the area first hand. ThankYou Chuck. I would like to take this opportunity to also thank all of the staff for a wonderful weekend. If you want to up your game on wingshooting I Highly recommend the 2 day class. All the Best

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Instruction. Fantastic Facilities. My two boys and I spent two days here at a shooting school with Chuck Baker as our instructor. We were in fine hands. My goal was to get one son familiar with shooting and knock the dust of my and my other son's shooting skills. Chuck embraced the challenge wonderfully and coached all three of us to much much better shooting with consistent mixes of praise, encouragement, and instruction. Time and money well spent.

Chuck Baker, our instructor, was very personable, very professional, is clearly a highly experienced and accomplished shot-gunner and knows how to teach/coach. He made it fun, kept peoples confidence up and and moved us ahead one step at t time. Would highly recommend Orivs Wing Shooting school to anybody interested and don't think you can do better than Chuck. Just wish we could have had more than one day.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Great Instructor. A Great Facility. Without a doubt, this two-day wingshooting school was the finest learning experience my son and I have ever experienced. The reason it was a memorable event - Chuck Baker. My son and I have never fired a shotgun. From the beginning under Chuck’s tutelage, we were breaking clays at the outset. It was shock and awe for me. It was especially exciting for my son because the initial eye dominant assessment revealed he would shoot with his left hand. He is a right hand dominant. Chuck tailored his instructions and guidance to each of us based on our experience and in terms each of us could relate. He is very patient yet insistent that we adhere to the Churchill method. I am now a proponent of this shooting method. I was consistently breaking clay targets my second day. Chuck’s passion for the sport is infectious and my son and I will continue to participate in clay shooting sports at every opportunity thanks to this experience. My two sons-in-law also shoot shotguns so I now have an opportunity to bond with them wingshooting. This Orvis school and its facilities offers a complete sporting experience year-round and the instructors and staff are courteous, professional and caring. They are the epitome of “Southern Hospitality.” I wholeheartedly recommend Pursell Farm’s Orvis Wingshooting School and you must request Chuck Baker. As a wing shooting instructor, he is par excellence.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Experience My husband and I participated in the 1-day wingshooting class with instructor Chuck Baker. Although we have shot sporting clays for several years, we learned so much new and pertinent information that we wished we had known all along. Chuck is an expert but makes everyone feel comfortable. His coaching style is exemplary. Meeting and learning with other wingshooters was an added bonus. We just finished the school and are looking for dates to sign up, again. We would highly recommend the shooting school and Orvis facilities at Pursell Farms.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Instructor - Great Location My wife and I attended the 2 day Orvis Wingshooting School at beautiful Pursell Farms in Sylacauga, Alabama this past weekend. We both thoroughly enjoyed the 2 day class and Chuck Baker is an excellent instructor. Chuck is friendly, outgoing, and a joy to spend time with but above all he is a great teacher in the Orvis/Churchill style of shooting. My wife has just recently developed an interest in Wingshooting. Earlier this year, I bought her a Ceasar Guerini Tempio Syren Shotgun from the Orvis store in Sylacauga which they fitted exactly to her measurements. Saturday morning when we started the class, she did not break any of the first 30 clays. By Sunday afternoon, she was hitting at least 65% or more. When she was properly following all of the instructions, she was breaking over 90% of the clays. Needless to say her improvement over the weekend was dramatic and even though I have been shooting a shotgun for 40+ years, I learned a great deal as well. I would be remiss in not mentioning the beautiful accommodations and delicious food that we enjoyed at the new Inn at Pursell Farms. This is truly 5 star accommodations and made the entire weekend a huge success that was our 30th wedding anniversary. On the way home Sunday evening, my wife asked me if we could go quail hunting the upcoming weekend. For the record she has never never made this request before. Needless to say I was able to accommodate her request, and I truly believe that as a result of Chuck Baker and the Orvis shooting school we have developed a sport that we can enjoy together for years to come. I highly recommend Orvis' shooting school and Chuck Baker at Pursell Farms in Sylacauga, Alabama. You will not be disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pull I just finished with my two day class. I had such a good time. The property is amazing and the staff were such great people. My instructor Chuck Baker was a true professional. He understood my skill level and worked to build my confidence and then challenge my skill level. I was amazed at how much my shooting improved on the second day. The first day is a lot of good information. It just took me a day to let it all sink in. And on the second day I was crushing targets. I even shot a double on the rabbits. I will be going back again in 2019. Not only was the class educational it was just flat out fun. I stayed at the Inn at Pursell farms. It is a truly amazing place also. People were so friendly and always there to help with everything. They really cater to your every need. I want to say thank you to the entire staff at Orvis and Pursell Farms. What a great combination.
