The Story

The Orvis-Endorsed Fly-Fishing Program at the Woodstock Inn & Resort allows guests from beginner to expert to cast on some of Central Vermont's most picturesque streams and lakes while honing fly-fishing skills you can use for a lifetime. For the experienced angler, our guides will take you on exciting excursions to tackle some of the more captivating hot spots. For those looking to learn how to fly cast or enhance their skills, we offer on-land or on-water lessons. Family and group lessons or excursions are a great way to try the sport! We fish local rivers and streams which host hidden pools and currents which are a joy to explore. We also cast from boats or the shore at a nearby scenic pond. Our fishing program practices catch and release, and is proud to be committed to the health of the Vermont fisheries. Located in idyllic Woodstock, Vermont, the Woodstock Inn & Resort defines country sophistication in one of New England's most charming and popular vacation destinations. After a day of fishing relax at our Spa, play a round of golf, or nestle into one of our fine dining establishments and accommodations.

The Resort has two year-round restaurants. The Red Rooster offers a farm-to-table breakfast, lunch, and dinner as well as bar seating and cocktail service. Richardson's Tavern offers cocktail service from a full bar with fabulous local and craft brews and Vermont pub-style dinner. During the summer months the Fairway Grill features lunch fare and classic cocktails set above the beautiful golf course, or join us for an incredible farm-to-table dinner on select summer dates at our stunningly renovated Red Barns that sit among our 3.5-acre organic Kelly Way Gardens.

At the Woodstock Inn & Resort, authentic New England craftsmanship greets guests at every turn, seamlessly combining a charming bed and breakfast experience with elegant and personalized touches. Guest rooms feature beautiful artwork and amenities, while our historic lodging property encourages guests to explore the abundant and interesting history of the Resort. For the very dedicated angler, we even have a uniquely-designed Collection Guestroom where fly fishing memorabilia adorn the walls and today's maps are ready to share the best fishing spots with you. Combine this with the tranquility of our Forbes 4-Star rated Spa, beautiful 18-hole golf course, expansive Athletic Club, mountain biking, hiking in the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park and surrounding area, authentic working farm, organic vegetable and flower gardens, New England Falconry, and quaint village full of shops, dining, and gorgeous hiking views to create a luxury getaway that you can find only at the Woodstock Inn & Resort.

Season:

We typically fish April-October, however certain year-round options for lessons and excursions are available (weather permitting).

Springtime and fall bring the best trout fishing in the area. When the weather and water warms up in July and August, we tend to move to the small brooks and streams and target some warm-weather species like bass and panfish.

Species:

  • Brown trout
  • Brook trout
  • Rainbow trout
  • Smallmouth bass

Region/Terrain:

Large Rivers:

The White River
Trips available year-round on this nearby (20-minute drive) large river with some challenging and deep waters.

The Black River
Trips available year-round and only a 30-minute drive to this medium-sized river where prize rainbow and brown trout can be found.

Small Rivers and Brooks:

The Ottauquechee River
The Ottauquechee River flows through town and is a fun river to learn in and explore.

The Kedron Brook
The Kedron Brook runs right through the town of Woodstock and has wonderful pools that make it worthy of exploration.

The Barnard Brook
The Barnard Brook is a quick drive to beautiful waters where, in the summer months, we cast for wild fish.

Other Nearby Brooks and Streams:

Local Ponds
These beautiful ponds offer trout and bass in a beautiful setting. Our guides will be available to give you tips as you cast from shore or in one of our Clacka-Craft drift boats.

Typical Weather:

Early spring weather can be chilly (40-50 degrees F), and the waters run cold with snowmelt. Dress in layers and bring a raincoat. Summers are typically sunny, and temperatures range from 65-85 daily, sunscreen is important! Fall cools down again, but the sun can warm up to 75 during the day so dress in layers. Winters are cold and thermal layers are important if you head out on the waters. Temperatures do not usually get above 35 degrees.
