Region/Terrain Where You Fish

Asheville, North Carolina is the epicenter of Southeastern Fly Fishing. The diversity of the Trout Fishing options we have is unrivaled in the East.

Our North Carolina Wade Trips include everything from small stream, hike-in brook trout fishing to more open mid-sized freestone Trout streams. These rivers include, but are not limited to the Davidson River, Green River, Pigeon River Drainage, Laurel River, North Mills River, and the Ravens Fork of the Oconoluftee.

Our Trout Float Trips take place on big wide open tailwater rivers that provide ample room to cast and opportunities at larger trout. These rivers include the Tuckaseegee River in North Carolina and the Watauga River and South Holston River in Tennessee. The Tuckaseegee River is the most heavily stocked river in North Carolina and the Watauga and South Holston have the best hatches in the South East.

Asheville also has a ton of Smallmouth Bass in the French Broad River, the Pigeon River, the Nolichucky and the Toe River. All of this is within one hour of Asheville, “the Paris of the South.”

Typical Weather by Season

The fishing season in North Carolina is year-round.

Spring: temperatures are often highs in the 70s, but can be as cool as 50. Bring a rain jacket because we often have spring rains. This is the best time to fish on North Carolina freestone streams.

Summer: tempratures are usually highs in the upper 80s, lows in the 60s. We get frequent, but short (30 min.), showers many afternoons.

Fall: temperatures are dropping by late September—highs in the 70s, lows in the 50s.

Winter: lows in the 30s, highs in the 40s-50s. Fishing in winter is often done midday only. We do get a few snows a year.

Sample of Typical Itinerary

Gear is provided for trips, but feel free to bring your own. Half-day trips include 4 hours on the water, soft drinks, and water. Full-day trips include 8 hours on the water, soft drinks, water, and streamside lunch.

Most trips begin between 7-8am. We can change the meet time to match any schedule you need.

Species You Fish for by Season

North Carolina streams provide the opportunity to catch rainbow, brown, and brook trout in the same day, year-round. Tennessee tailwaters are brown and rainbow trout only.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Day on the Water I have been fishing with Brown twice and have been more than impressed on both trips. I was excited to have a guide close to my age, mid-twenties, who had enough experience to teach a novice. The first trip I booked was with my younger brother. We both required extensive instruction and he never lost patience. It was a very successful fishing trip and the conversation came easily. He was able to relate to my younger brother in college and never missed a beat. I took my 83 year old grandfather on the second trip and don't think it could have gone any better. We again hit the fish pretty hard. My grandfather has been flyfishing for a while and did not need the same instruction I did. Brown did a good job of handling two different stages of fishermen on the boat. My grandfather was most impressed with Brown's knowledge of the river and surrounding areas. He graduated from Sewanee with a background in geology and environmental studies. It was pretty cool to learn more about the river we were fishing! I definitely recommend booking through him and will certainly be going back. He even keeps a blog with current fishing conditions on his website!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!! Had an AMAZING experience! First day I did a wade trip with Zach and had a blast. I am fairly new to Flyfishing and he was patient, explained everything very well, a great instructor and just a great guide all around! Second day I did a float trip with Brown and my 70 year old mom who has never fly fished before and another all around great experience! He was very patient as well, a great instructor and very knowledgeable. Will definitely be booking another trip again next time I’m back in the area. Brown and his team were great. It was like going fishing with your buddies. Great people and great times! Thanks for a VERY memorable experience! Worth every penny!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful day on the River I’m not an expert level trout fisherman, but I’ve fished all over, with many, many guides. Brown Hobson is among the best. Calm, cool, competent is how I would describe him. A day in the boat is fun, informative and relaxing. Fish hard, enjoy the day. We had a slamming’ day on the Watauga. Lot of very healthy and feisty 13-15” rainbows and some nice browns.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great guide, great fishing trip I had a great fly fishing trip with Brown Trout. My guide was Jamie Blankenship, who not only got me catching a bunch of trout but was also incredibly generous with his fishing knowledge. He answered about a thousand questions from me and showed me techniques that I'll be using on my own. Great trip, great guide.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great day on the Watauga with Brown Perfect early spring day with Brown Hobson. He knows the river like the back of his hand, and worked hard to put us on fish. We were a beginner and an eager intermediate and he handled both of us with skill and grace. We both learned a lot, and we both caught a lot of fish. A great day.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing experience! I was recently part of a Pastor’s retreat that included an afternoon of fishing. I was really excited about the opportunity but apprehensive since I had no idea what to expect. Brown and his team made that apprehension turn into excitement and relaxation with their instruction and patience. Brown was my guide on the water and was beyond helpful...and patient! He made sure there were opportunities to catch fish and enjoy the surroundings. He also shared a ton of knowledge with us not only about how to fish but about the fish and the habitat they live in. It was an amazing experience that I plan on repeating and Brown will be my first call when I’m ready to come back.
