Orvis ToughChew Dog Beds are chew-resistant, meaning they stand up to the majority of determined bed-shredders. But they are not 100% chew-proof dog beds. It’s unlikely a dog can tear up this bed, but there’s a small possibility an especially determined and powerful chewer can get through the ToughChew cover. These beds are made to be extra sturdy, so they’ll withstand almost anything. Each one has multiple layers of rugged, chew-resistant nylon covered with soft microvelvet for comfort. If your dog rips up this bed, you’ll get a refund, no questions asked.

Nylon stands out as the toughest fabric for dog beds, which is why we use it. We layer the nylon in our ToughChew covers for extra strength. The base layer is ripstop, then we bond a soft microfiber layer on top of that for coziness. For even more protection, we use a sturdy 840-denier nylon fabric for the liner. The cover is finished with a durable brass zipper.

Here are a few strategies to stop your dog from chewing their bed—but be patient with yourself and your dog as you introduce and practice them.


  1. Give your dog plenty of safe chew toys. Refillable food toys are also great when you need to redirect your dog from chewing their bed.
  2. Identify and remove stressors. This strategy works best for the dog that chews their bed to relieve anxiety. Figure out the triggers—boisterous children, thunder, and fireworks are common ones. Move your dog’s bed to a calmer area.
  3. Leave on a television or music when you’re away. Background noise can keep a pup distracted from outside sounds and from feeling alone.
  4. Give your dog plenty of daily opportunities for exercise and play. Rigorous exercise and games will help burn off energy. A tired dog is often a calm dog. If your dog is bored or has pent-up energy, they’ll chew or do other destructive things to get the activity they need.
  5. Talk to your veterinarian. If your dog suffers from extreme anxiety, they may need behavior therapy or medication. Your vet can point you to a specialist in your area who can help your destructive chewer.

For most adult dogs, chewing is a healthy behavior they reserve for their toys and treats. But destructive chewing can be a sign of stress in your dog—separation anxiety or something else in their environment may drive them to compulsive bed chewing. Boredom may also be the cause. Any restless or frustrated dog with no positive outlet for pent-up energy may chew destructively.
