The Story

Fly-fishing guide Julie Szur is enthusiastic about sharing her wisdom with anglers in the Slate Run area of Pennsylvania: I was born and raised in Bradford, PA, a small, valley town nestled in the heart of the Allegheny National Forest. This is where I started fishing the local trout streams with my dad at the age of five using worms, minnows, and occasionally, artificial flies. As I grew older, my love for fishing also grew. During trout season, along with my Golden Retriever, Brookie, I work as a professional guide on the area trout streams surrounding Slate Run, PA. In that area, I guide clients on the Pine, Cedar Run, Slate Run, Kettle Creek, Little Pine, and others. I also guide on the Little Juanita and Spring Creek in central Pennsylvania.

I love sharing the fly-fishing knowledge learned from my mentors and from my personal experiences on the water with my clients. My guiding is heavily instruction-based for men, women, and children. I focus on stream entomology, fly tying, water reading, casting, and catch-and-release techniques. During fall and winter, I split my time between Pine Creek and the Erie and Ohio tributaries, where I enjoy chasing Steelhead. I guide on a wide variety of waters for many different species such as brook trout, brown trout, rainbow trout, steelhead, carp, bass, and musky. I do both walk-and-wade trips along with float trips for individuals and groups. Over the last few years, I have also enjoyed teaching fly-fishing skills to breast cancer survivors, many of whom have become not only avid fly fishers but also close friends.

"My ultimate goal is to introduce fly fishing, and what this amazing sport has to offer, to others."

Awards and Accolades

I have served as president of the Slate Run Sportsman's Club in Slate Run, PA. At present, I am involved in many local fishing clubs, stockings, and conservation activities in both PA and NY, including the Steelhead Association in Erie, PA, the Pennsylvania Fly Fishing Museum, and the 50-50 Orvis program where I introduce women to fly fishing. I help Boy Scouts get their fishing badges, instruct fly fishing programs to cancer survivors and veterans, and teach fly fishing skills through the PA Fish and Boat Commission, where I enjoy introducing women to the sport of fly fishing.

My prices range from $195 for a half-day trip, $450 for a full-day float trip.

A list of the main target species I fish includes wild brown trout, wild brook trout, Kamloop rainbow trout, bass, muskie and steelhead.

April through October is trout and other seasonal fish. October through April is steelhead season.

The main area in which I guide, the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, is a deep valley gorge though which run several prime wild trout streams. Pine Creek is easily accessible, and is also wade-friendly. Others are wild mountain streams with pocket water, rocks, slate banks, rocky ridges, and long runs surrounded on all sides by mossy banks and beautiful vegetation. The area is easily accessible.

Typical Weather:

April and May are cool with daytime daytime temperatures ranging from the 30s to the 50s, with nighttime temperatures in the 30s. June temperatures tend to be warmer with daytime highs in the 60s and 70s.

What is Provided:

What I provide my clients: Technical instruction, personally hand-tied flies, life jackets, plus food and beverages for all float trips. Generally, clients provide their own gear and rods.

What to Bring:

Clients should dress accordingly for weather and bring along bug spray, polaroid sun glasses, hat, sunscreen, waders, rain jackets, fishing vest, lightweight socks, long-sleeved fishing shirts, and any special dietary or medication needs.

Gear Recommendations:

On Pine Creek: 9 ft rods (5 and 6 weight), 5 and 6 weigh-forward fly lines. On the other area streams: 6 to 7 ft rods (3,4 or 5), and 3, 4, or 5 weight-forward fly lines.

Additional Activities:

The Pennsylvania Grand Canyon area offers wide variety of trail riding, hiking, bird watching, camping, and kayaking. The scenery is breathtaking in the canyon.Clients should bring their cameras.

I fish with a Golden Retriever (Brookie) that I trained to assist clients who have limited mobility. Brookie is always with me, even on float trips, weather permitting. I also carry a comfortable folding chair to be placed when necessary along the stream for anyone who might need it. There is opportunity to bring home your catch if you desire.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Julie Szur - Guide in PA We checked the Orvis site a couple of days prior to leaving for our two days of guided fishing on Pine Creek. It rated the fishing as "fish somewhere else this week." But, we'd already paid for accommodations and our daughter planned to join us. Was the fishing excellent? No but it was good. Was the guide good? No. She was excellent. She improved all three of us in our fly fishing skills. She was great company. And, she put us on fish - trout, bass, fall fish - with dry flies and streamers alike. A great couple of days for all of us.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fly Fishing with Julie Szur Several old friends got together for a weekend in Wellsboro Pa. and though we have fished together many times, none of us were fly fishermen. Julie was very patient in helping teach the basics to 3 beginners. We had a blast and by the end of our instruction were casting flies into Pine Creek.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent instructor and guide! Surprise birthday present - and what an experience! Julie was so patient teaching us casting, reading the water and knowing where to cast. Infinitely patient and kind. So knowledgeable and passionate about sharing that knowledge to “hook” us into this sport. She was determined for us to catch a fish. Highly recommend her if you are someone who wants to learn and do and not just be lead and shown. In addition, Julie shared information about the region and the flora and fauna we came across.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fly Fishing Trip With Julie Szur I had the pleasure of enjoying a wonderful guided fly fishing trip on Pine Creek and Slate Run with Julie on June 18. She was very enthusiastic. She put me on fish allay long and worked very hard to get me to catch fish. She could not have been more accommodating. I would highly recommend her if you are planning a trip to the area.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great day on Pine Creek The Pine Creek area is amazing and Julie is the perfect guide especially for first timers to the area. My son & I received instruction on hatches, dropper fly combinations, reading the water and techniques such as swinging wet flies and efficiently casting light, small flies. Learning while catching beautiful browns and rainbows in a walk and wade session. Julie is very knowledgeable, patient and a great advocate for the natural resources in this part of Pennsylvania

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best trout fishing trip ever! Julie's love and knowledge of fly fishing as well as her teaching ability was the best I've come across. Insect activity, matching patterns, reading the water where and where are fish are mostly to be based on water conditions and flow were just some of the things she covered. The importance of handling trout during the release were just as important to her and she conveyed this in a way that was deferential to me and the fish. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Julie, not just for the quality and the quantity of the fish but also the knew knowledge and appreciation I have for the sport. I have spent a lot of time with guides in the last three years, but no one compares to Julie. Thank you, Julie!
