The Story

Join Orvis and Shooting Sportsman Magazine for a 5-day, 4-night wingshooting experience at Texas’s award-winning Greystone Castle Sporting Club. This hosted trip will include five walk-up, mixed-bag hunts and one European-style pheasant shoot, with additional opportunities for guests to enjoy sporting clays and 5-stand. Greystone Castle, located just west of the Dallas/Fort Worth metro area, is a one-of-a-kind destination. Guest suites, lodging, and dining are all located within a grand stone castle, while hunting takes place on nearly 6,000 acres of surrounding private ground. Exceptional walk-up hunting for pheasant, quail, and partridge is facilitated by a seasoned guide team and strings of classy gundogs. Guests return from the field to enjoy a fireside drink in the castle’s grand pavilion then adjourn to the formal dining room for a meal prepared with love by executive chef Vickie Sewell. Greystone Castle is a sporting oasis in central Texas, and a place where folks can enjoy an abundance of birds in a diverse expanse of cover. Greystone delivers royal treatment, ensuring guests an elegant, but comfortable, hunting getaway.

Greystone Castle is just that, a stone structure complete with turrets and ivy-clad walls perched high above the historic brick-making town of Thurber, TX. The central courtyard of the castle filters guests towards a grand pavilion, which is home to a staffed bar, sitting area, and game room, all of which maintain sweeping views of the hunting grounds. 5 suites contain 15 private bedrooms that are available to guests, each room with its own bathroom, luxurious bed, and artful décor. The formal dining room and its grand fireplace are looked after by executive chef Vickie Sewell and her culinary team. The physical castle also includes a spacious conference facility, a swimming pool with hot tub, a gunroom with poker table, and a stocked pro shop. Just outside the castle walls, a scenic lookout affords a breathtaking vista of the entire estate.

Meals & Alcohol

Dining at Greystone Castle starts with your evening in the pavilion bar with mouthwatering appetizers including our world famous 7 Spiced Crispy Quail.

Each morning will start with a traditional southern breakfast. Either fresh made biscuits and gravy, fluffy pancakes, or crispy bacon and eggs. Those guests that want something lighter will enjoy fresh fruit and pastry.

After the morning hunt, lunch favorites include Pork loin and cheese grits, pheasant salad wraps, or the famous Buffalo burger.

Liquor and meals are included in the package price.

Guests on this trip to Greystone Castle will enjoy 5 half-day sessions of walk-up hunting for a mixed bag of pheasants, bobwhite quail, and chukar partridge. Hunting takes place in the low country below the castle proper, which affords hunters plenty of space to stretch out. With the help of Greystone’s revered pointing and flushing dogs, guests hunt grass strips, scrub, overgrown ditch edges, and sparse oak stands. Birds use the cover to great advantage, and coveys assemble in large number. Guests who enjoy a long walk can find one at Greystone Castle, though flat ground and manicured cover allow easier navigation for those who require it.

Guests will also take part in a European-style pheasant shoot, which guarantees to feature high, hard-flying birds and plenty of them. The orchestration of this shoot makes it a great group activity, one that blends challenging shooting, a refined tradition, and good fun.

Those shooters who wish can add sporting clays or 5-stand to the stay. Greystone Castle has two complete sporting clays courses and two 5-stands, any of which will meet the needs of the most discriminating wingshooter. Whether guests wish for a brief warm-up preceding the hunt, or whether they wish to dig in for a full round or two of clays, Greystone Castle can provide.
